View Full Version : Wanting to move to Lake Havasu area.

Me and my wife are wanting to move to the Lake Havasu area. We will both have to find new jobs before the move. I have been in the supervisor/manager position for several manufacturing facilities for the last 12 years. This is the type of job I would be hoping to find. My wife is a auditor for a major company and would be looking for a similar job or in the administration department. What would be some good resources to use in the Havasu area to help on catching a new job? Career centers, head hunters etc. Thanks!

You do hear that you can't make any money in Havasu. Take a look around at people that live year round in Havi:idea:
You got to have your own gig... sell to the world

What he said (and I'm sure that comment wasn't directed toward me...right?).
Unless you have your own gig, or are involved in:
1. Boating
2. Tourism
3. Real Estate (and all assoc. with it. ie. const., mortgage, etc)
4. Medical
5. Law
6. Accounting
...you're going find it tough to make a decent living...one where you can afford to buy an avg. priced home here. Although now is a GREAT time to pickup a house at a GREAT price, if you are qualified for a conventional mort.

Don't you hate it when you have a plan and everyone shoots it down with negative remarks?
Coming from Tennessee, the pay scale might actually be what he's used to. Most of you are used to California's rate of pay, which is inflated, just like everyone's egos.
Young, good luck with your move. There are a lot of people on here that own businesses in Havasu who might be looking to hire one of you. Someone you might want to talk to is NashvilleBound. He now lives in Tennessee, but came from this area and still frequents the Havasu area, from what I understand. NoDigg is another one who might be able to shoot you in the right direction. Again, good luck.

I totally agree, I hate when people tell me the truth and warn me about what really goes on......
Ok the real deal on Havi, There are jobs for blocks and blocks, The lowest paying job I found was starting at $50 an hour and that was at Mcdonalds. I mean the average wage in this town is somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 and hour.... Come on down and live the high on the hog life.
Come on Angie, if you make $10 bucks an hour in his town you are considered as doing GOOD....

At least he's trying to get a job first :D One of Jeff's employee's came by last weekend wanting a letter of reference. Seems he's selling the family 5th wheel (they don't own a house, they rent) and are moving to South Carolina. Since we are considering a move ourselves in the next couple of years, I tried to be positive, and said, "so, you've been there to visit and liked it, I assume?" Nope, never been east of Arizona. :jawdrop: Gonna use all of the money from the 5th wheel to drive across the country. Get a job when they get there. Brother in law lives out there. He told me he talked to a RE agent who can find him a house for $35K. Nice. BTW, he's making $23/hour and has 2 years of work lined up here.
So, at least YOUNG is looking for a job before he heads out. Hopefully he's been to Havasu before. Otherwise, it might be quite a culture and climate shock.

Havasu full time might want to rethink that one. I know several peeps that have gone to Havi full time and they have all come back to sotuh oc. Cant imagine living where I love to vacation alot, seems like it would ruion it. No thanks I will stay in beautifull south oc, get up have breakfast at the harbour and when I want to boat then I will drive may ass to my river home good enough for me. Also with 16 years in a goverment job we will not walk away from our retirement 2.5 @ 55. But when I do retire I would love to spend time in Havi the oc and Cabo.... who says you cant have it all:D :D :D Seriously good luck too you and If thats your dream then follow it, no matter what we all say.

I'm looking for a Class A driver to rain on a boom truck. Pay starts at around 15/hr depending on experience. Hard to find a qualified applicant even at that rate. Cheaper than in Cali but good for Havi. Oh yeah, I'm from Tennersee too!

Before you pull the trigger, go to your local sauna, wear your work clothes, don't add water to the rocks, and stay for a day. Repeat as needed.
We love Havasu, but the heat is stifling even if you are a lifelong dez resident, and the best job I've seen available in the past few years was a general manager at the casino - that's only the one job in the price range, and it required an MBA.

Lets say you own your home, and your cars, zero debt and live in Havasu.
Can you make it with the income from that town??
For two people you would still need around 2 or 3 grand a month of income to pay for living expences food, ins. taxes, gas, all the shit.
After a few years your stuff wears out like your cars. Are you bringing in a enough money to pay for that stuff too?
I have thought about living in Havi full time and I think of these things.
I only come up with outside income ideas. Maybe a Internet business that markets to the world and doesen't depend on Havasu for income.
Just a idea here:idea:
I would feel better about living in Havasu if I had a big cash flow of outside income coming into my mail box or pay pal web site.

Have you been here in the middle of summer?
Have you been here in the winter?
Does your wife like to shop?
All things to consider before making the move in my opinion.
I recommend visiting both seaasons totally different lifestyle, in my opinion I think peeps come in the summer, have sooo much fun on the water cant get enough decide to move here and never visit in the winter, and realize that it is a major culture shock. No Mall, but you can drive into vegas 2 hrs away. But, then again it's all about what you make of it. I live here and really enjoy it, finding a job can be difficult, just make sure you have one lined up and you will be fine. bottom line is do your research on realestate etc... Good Luck with your decision. Hope to see you here :)

Darrell,
what processing/ manufacturing plants are in town?
Is there a big enough company that needs an auditor in this town?
The only big company in this town is WALMART
You either own your own company, work with your hands or work for the government if you want to make a decent living.

The town is great to live in but when I moved here I was able to get a job in Kingman for 6 dollars an hour less then I was making in California. I finally transfered to havasu and took another 2 dollar an hour hit but you know its worth it and we are living ok. My wife took a big hit in wages from california to here but the key is we are both happy. Less stress and less headaches. I am sure you can look in surrounding areas to find a job to. Dont forget Laughlin is just a little drive away and for the jobs you are looking for that might be were you have to work. I wouldnt be surprised if moving from Tennesse you wont see much of a wage change becuase of the cost of living. Moving from California is a huge change in wages but I think Tennesse might be comperable. Good luck keep us informed.

I have had a major health issue recently that is playing a major role in this. I LOVE boating and the boating life style. Friends, family, water and horsepower all make for a great time. So there seems like no better place for all than...Lake Havasu.

I own a local pool service company. I grew up here and moved to Scottsdale for about eight years, and then moved back. I definately made more money in Scottsdale, but the lifestyle change is worth it. I can be in the desert in five minutes on my dirtbike, or I can be on the lake in 10 minutes. I love it

Easy, there are many pool route and service guys who make $8k+ month in Havasu. In BHC I know a couple of guys that bill $35k+ a month. Its not easy work.

lalhc

Pool service guys make pretty good money in Havasu. I would say that they get at least $75 per pool per month and they can service each pool within 15 minutes per week. That equates to making over $37 per hour if you consider servicing the pool 4 times per month and providing 15 minutes in between routes.

I've been here a long time and if I had the choice, I'd do it again.
There's a saying in Havasu that when you move here, you don't lose your
wife, you lose your turn!
I can personally agree that about 1/3 to 1/2 of all married people that I know
that weekend here and then end up moving here end up divorced within 2 years. I'm talking about people that I never would have guessed would
divorce, yet they did. Strange.

Too bad you have a medical condition because I want out of the west and want to move to TN. Hey what kinda place you got over there. Wanna trade for my Havi house. :D
Seriously though you may want to even look at Vegas area for jobs. If you did that then you could live in Bullhead City area and be an hour away from Vegas for work an hour away from Havasu and you could boat on primarily on Mohave which lakewise to me is a better lake than Havasu but I like the town of Havasu better for having a house. Just an option. Otherwise other cities to look at for jobs (not that there is much but just to help you out geographically) would be:
Parker, AZ
Bullhead City, AZ
Las Vegas, NV
Henderson, NV
Boulder City, NV
Blythe, CA
Needles, CA
Kingman, AZ
Laughlin, NV

Finding a job outside of Havasu would be fine. A one hour drive doesn't scare me or the wife. What are some areas within the 1 hour range? What type of businesses are located there.
For all of you that live and work in Havasu. Where do you all work? It seems from some of the comments that there is nothing in Havasu.
Thanks to all for the info.

Thanks!
I found this on the net while searching about Arizona.
Just moved to Arizona! Now this is a state that knows how to live!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.
June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper.
June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.
July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.
July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body). Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.
July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and ****s. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ol' Mr. Sun strikes again.
July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order
parts.
July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here?
Aug. 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state.
Aug. 8th:
If another wise *** cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!
Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when I sat on the seats in the car, I thought my *** was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and *** . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ***, and baked cat.
Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do **** for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really
warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn desert? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.
Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?"
My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Arizona. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes.

Still here, just trying to digest all of the info.
A little info: Worked as a supervisor for a supplier to the automotive world from 95-2003, supervised an Ethanol plant from 2004-2006 and currently work as the production supervisor for a Zinc Oxide manufacturing plant. I do/have ran a fab buisness on the side for all these years. I build custom tube chassis rock crawlers and custom drivetrains. Mig,tig, arc, lathe, mill etc. are some extra skills.
Young, there are a lot of boat mfg and service, also lots of off road and fabrication shops. Get a professional resume, come out here for a week and hit the pavement. Just walk and talk and if you are worth your salt someone will hire you! Remember you wont find any miracle jobs but you will get local market pay. There are also several large manufacturing plants (Sterilite is one). Do some Google'ing instead of spending your time on this forum:D ....Remember confidence, background, great resume and dress for success.:D
Best of luck to you!
Let us know what you find!
Any HB peeps here that have openings at their business or work?

So no 100K+ jobs there? Damn... I was thinking of moving too. But I would need one of those for the wife as well.
Too bad. That is the growth the town could use.

It's funny how the majority of the people commenting on living in Havasu don't live here. :D
Ain't that the truth.
We moved here from the O.C. in 1993. We were ready to escape the rat race even back then. Both of us have skills and good work ethic, we've never had a problem making a living - in fact, we've done quite well. It's been said before, move here with no debt and adequate savings. That's good advice no matter where you plan to move.
BTW, we had been married 13 years when we moved here, and we are still married - 27 years now. How time flies. There are always exceptions to the rules.
You may have to be a little more creative and venture outside your comfort zone a little now and then, but don't let anyone shoot down your dream.
Best of luck in your search.

You know what else is cool here:
No traffic
Clean Air
Everywhere you go you see water
Every restaurant in town knows I drink Iced-Tea and they bring it to me without me even having to ask :)
85 degree weather in the middle of November.
Havasu may not be for everyone, but I'm sure happy that I live here :)

Thanks!
Why would you want to move to that shit hole? :D

No shit, last time I was there some a-hole pissed down the side of my rig in the in-n-out burger parking lot.
Seriously, if you have a good work ethic you'll find a job and make it work in any town.
I'd personally check into county and city jobs and just keep applying until you land one. Get someone to make you a really nice resume and figure out where they post there job listings.
My wife worked in the construction industry for about 12 years. She worked her way up to and estimator position for a large company. In the mean time she had been applying to the Phoenix Fire Dept. for about 4 years to be an inspector in new construction. She would retest every six months and get on the lists. She practiced her interviews and studied constantly. The job actually required an AA or experience. She didn't go to college but had tons of experience. That didn't deter her from applying against other applicants. Even when she didn't make the lists, she would just keep trying year after year.
She finally got the job last year. She took a huge pay cut for starting salary, but the stress in her life is gone. Working in the private sector was demanding and you always had to worry about making the company money and whether or not you were going to get laid off at some point. She doesn't have those problems any more and she's never been happier.
I'm just saying, sometimes the govt. jobs don't pay as well, but you have job security, awesome benefits, retirement, and for her she's just proud as hell to work for the Fire Dept..;)

i know a few ppl who work at the prision in blyth CA, and drive back and forth from havi...
heck, at least the state's (CA) pay is kinda alright, but the drive could suck ...
i considered the transfer, if hubby retires to havi, before i am ready...
