Is a real mess out there.
http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_286115312.html
California Highway Patrol officers reopened a section of the Golden State (5) Freeway south of the truck fire in the tunnel in Newhall Pass, but say the key artery will be closed north of the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway interchange until further notice.
CHP officers reported that all three freeways headings towards the pass -- the 5, the San Diego (405) Freeway and the Foothill (210) Freeway -- to reach the Newhall Pass.
But at the pass, all northbound traffic is still being diverted to the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway. Traffic may then use surface streets in Santa Clarita to rejoin the 5 freeway, but delays are reported there.
Vehicles heading to the San Joaquin Valley may stay on routes 14 and 58, via Tehachapi, to rejoin the 5 and 99 freeways in Kern County.
Southbound traffic is diverted from the 5 freeway in Santa Clarita to use surface streets to travel east to the 14 freeway. Traffic is also being diverted onto westbound route 126 at Magic Mountain, to head to Los Angeles via Ventura County, CHP officers said.

Just cruised around Valencia and it is grid lock everywhere. Everyone on the 5 south is still sitting. All on ramps are shut down. No one is moving anywhere.
I heard the 8 lanes of the 5 are collapsing due to the fire in the truck route tunnel underneath. If this is the case the 5 will be shut down till they fix the freeway which could be VERY bad for us.
Looks like I will be staying home monday....

Ummm that report is wrong....it just took me 2 hours to get thru that coming south. 14 is open...5 South is shut down at Roxford and diverted to the old road. 5 North is being diverted to 14 north. 1.5-2hours to get thru the pass either way.

Think has been that way all day. Saw the back-up on the freeway and it doesnt look good. Actually surprised that people dont listen to the news to know what is going on and to figure out alternate routes although there are very few for getting into Santa Clarita.

In reference to to the thread title "CHP reopens section of 5 freeway after pileup", yo see if some people read that title they will have the impression that the freeway is open, when it is in deed closed!!!

Rich,
I think we leave early enough we should be okay. heading down lyons to San fernando and to the 14. Now coming home:eek: . I went into Van Nuys this morning around 7:30 and made it in a hour. Coming home went out the 118 to the 23 across to 126 and it took me about hour that way as well. Yes I know it's the weekend and Monday will be very different. I have made 4 trips back and forth into town so far, luckily haven't had to go must past McBean, getting ready to make another trip for my sons homecoming dance, and then yes pick him up later. FOCK, I'm tired of driving today.
Also I heard all 8 lanes( 4 north and 4 south) will be closed until Tuesday. Hope it's not true just what i heard. Only lanes open should be the north truck lanes and I think the Old Road south.

Just heard they "might" open by Tuesday. Depends on heat damage to bridges. Could be closed for quite some time if damaged the bridges structural integrity.

Last I heard it was still closed, north and south bound.
Kind of makes you wonder about the design of that truck tunnel/underpass. Why would they put that truck tunnel under the main I-5 freeway, the main route between north and south California.
Probably the most important interstate freeway in California, and one of the most important roads in the country.

What's also scary to know is that there hasnt been one change since the earthquake....not one...same shit...But, I'm sure they will have no problem coming up with the money to build hundreds of more houses...!!!

Will take the Old Road to the 210 in the morning since go to work early enough that traffic might not be that bad. Coming home tomorrow will base my decision on what the radio reports say. Most likely will take Little Tujunga since work off the 210 anyways.

I just went from Lyons to Northridge via the Old Road: 1 hour
Then Northridge to Costco off Via Princessa via Balboa/Old Road/Sierra Hwy: 30 mins
South 14 still looks pretty busy and traffic across San fernando is terrible.
I am heading with the family to my in-laws house in Montrose this afternoon for a few days till this stuff clears up.
We drove by the wreckage you could see it from the Old Road. Looks like a war torn area. Sad to see so much burnt and twisted metal.
