Anyone know if I can put a Yamaha Rhino in the bed of shortbed Chevy 1500 and close the tailgate a bit or take the tailgate off and the back tires hang off the rear end a little. Im pulling a travel trailer and cant pull it with the tailgate down.. Thanks for the input..

Will not work, there is a tread on glamis dunes where guys fabbed an attachment in the hitch receiver. You take off the tailgate and put this peice on. It may save you a few inches but not much. Other than that you need to go vertical and at an angle. This seems like a lot of work and a pain to put in and out of the bed.

Short bed no way. You need all the gate. I have the 1500 short bed and have had 2 Rhinos. I'm not even sure how much room is left after the tail gate is down.
Rhino wheel base is 6'3" then you have to add for the front portion of the Rhino against the front of the bed - It's a bummer but you are out of real estate.

How bout rigging up your own bed extension with a little 1/4 steel plate bolted into the back end? Or even some plywood????

I have a longbed on my superduty and I can get my tailgate half way up and that's it

here is mine in a short bed. I put jack stands under the rear of the chassis at the end of the bed as to take the weight off the tailgate cables.

I put one in the back of my F150 Screw. Tailgate down. My bed is 5'6". Jackstand method.
I also removed the front bumper. No probs!

I'm surprised a lot of people put a Rhino in those truck beds. Sure seems like a big risk for damage when a thousand dollar trailer would prevent it.

I agree - I have white knuckles and clinch every bump on the 40, but using the fast track to get out of OC to this point has been worth it. I did get a trailer in the end though.

Its actually not as bad as it looks. Plus not having to worry about towing at 55mph is a huge plus. :D :D

Sure looks like it raises the center of gravity a lot. Besides the potential damage to the truck itself loading and unloading, handling would seem like an issue.

It fits in the bed of my 1500 Z71 just fine. (I actually sold my Crew cab for an extra cab so I would have the longer bed.
I tie strap both sides of the tailgate to the bed just in case of a cable failure. Ivan Dan used to only tie strap one side of his bed until a cable broke;):D
Handling wise it is fine. I probably would charge rice road and the whoops at 90 mph but it's really a no issue if you use common sence around corners.

Just have to be ready to pounce when you see a deal..
One of my clients just snatched up a 21' 2005 WW superlight for 10K a couple months ago. That trailer would have cost 23K+ a couple years ago.
I told them I would give them 10,200;)

yea I like it too, we went down and looked at the porta potties at bass pro and talked to walts rv about adding a crapper, I was going to eventually add one in the shower (I would loose one of the fresh water tanks) but found out it is a little too small for the jeep, then I came accross this for a great deal and couldnt say no:D

The parts would be between 3-4 hundred (for a nice toilet) and I was going to do all the work myself, it really isnt that hard to do. Or you can use the porta potty and not mess will the hoses (how much can you shit in a weekend)
If your interested I can get some estimates on installing one in the shower

I tow a Nautique with my Rhino in the bed of an f250SD (long bed, no tailgate on) all the time and it's a load in that. In a 1500 shortbed, it'll sway, rock, and roll everywhere except where you want it to go unless a) you use supersprings or an equivilent, and b) fab a 3/4" sheet of plywood under a pair of 2x6's that the rear wheels rest on. Mine just fits without an extension, and I've seen folks using a similar set up.
I tie the rig into the bed using a 20' 10000 lb ratcheting load strap that uses the front tie down rings and another one through the cage using some side tie-down rings to stop a bit of the top heavy sway.
To keep the Rhino from becoming a rear seat passenger under braking, I bolted down a 65" long piece of 2"x2" angle iron over the topcap of the front of the bed. When you crank it down to hold it in with no tailgate, and then apply the brakes when you're cut off on the highway, the rhino likes to shift forward so it bends the front of the bed until it touches the cab. The angle iron keeps it much more rigid.
I have a trailer for the Rhino, (I'm setting it up to tow two of them) but this arrangement allows me to bring two different toys instead of just one.

I will say now that I live in AZ and you can tow a trailer at 90 like everyone else, I have not put it in the truck bed. I became concerned when the tie down loops in my old truck started to bend along with the front of the bed box. I think that may have been from the dirt road into Havasu Palms.
It is good to know that it can be done but I don't like to do it all the time.
