looking at some used chevy trucks and need some advice.
i currently tow a couple of times a year from o.c. to havasu (leave the boat, 25 daytona, there most of the year) using my dodge 1500, 5.9 motor, auto trans, 3.92 rear axle.. tows o.k.,slows to 55 up chiriaco...
looking at two different trucks
1. a 2005 1500 z71 with the 5.3, 9,000 miles
2. a 2004 2500 LT with the 6.0, 25,000 miles
both around the same price..
my other choice is to just do another dodge with the 5.9 hemi...
whats the consensus on these trucks???
thanks gm

I faced the same problem... I went with the 5.3 and glad I did. It only has 15 HP and 20 Ft Lbs of torque less than the 6.0 (if I remember right) w/ a lot better gas mileage
I had a 1500 Dodge w/ a hemi for 6 months but never towed w/ it... It was a rental while suing Nissan over a Titan. It had very impressive power, but unnecessary for everyday use.

On another note... Do you really need a 4wd?? if not your just costing yourself money. Cost more up front, burns more gas, 1000lbs more, more on maintance.... Now if the ramp you use is dirt/sand you need 4wd.

I've got a 05 Avalanche with the 5.3l with the SuperChips programmer installed and a Magnaflow exhaust. Plenty of power, aavg of 19.0 mpg amd it wounds awesome. The only bad thing is my wife cant see well out of it to drive it.
Well maybe thats not such a bad thin after all. :rollside:

My opinion is the 5.3 will be suitable for your needs, more than the 6.0. The power difference is not that great, as stated by 455, but the gas mileage is significant between the two. This is especially important if you are only towing once in awhile.

I'd go with the 1500. it's newer and 4x4 . less miles= more warrenty

I have the same problem with my dodge 5.9. Going through the same area. I think it's just warn out. I would get the 5.3 4x4.
Call Jay Photoglou...He will find you the best deal around...new or used.

I own a 05 5.3L crew cab 1500 and it tows both my boat and enlosed Carson Trailer no problem.(So well I can't justify buying a diesel yet)
Mileage is very good.
If your old Dodge made it up the hill the Chevy will pull it in 3rd with little problems.
I think you can get the 4x4 with the 4:10 gears? (Get atleast 3:73's)
