I've been wanting a Wrangler for years. Winter is here and I am thinking it is time to finally pull the trigger and get one. I'm going to make the Wrangler my only vehicle and I'm wondering how well it will tow my little 19' boat. I don't plan to tow very far with it but if need be I would like to be able to tow it.
All the Wranglers I have been looking at have the 4.0 inline 6.

I say fine but don't take my word for it....look up the tow rating for the vehicle and then what your boat weighs.

We used to tow our 27' Day Cruiser with a CJ7. It was only from the trailer to the water and back, a distance of about a mile round trip. Worked well, never had trouble pulling out!

Are you talking 2007+ or 2006-.....that would be TJ or JK?
I would not do it unless you got a 2007+ JK Unlimited with a stick. Even with that you are maxed at 3,500# tow rating. I think your 19' boat would be pushing over 3,500#.
Towing with a TJ is a death-wish because the suspension is so flexy. YJ (square headlights) would be better if you are going to get an older wrangler due to leaf springs.

4.0L is rated at 190hp with more than enough torque to tow a 19' boat.
I have a 98xj and wouldn't hesitate to throw a boat or a small camper behind it. But I have a truck for that so I've never actually towed with the XJ. :D
As far as how the Wrangler with it's short wheelbase will act with a boat behind it I can't say, but I do see a few around town towing trailers so it must not be too bad. If you get one opt. for the towing package if it's offered. The XJ towing package consisted of a Larger Radiator, Transmission Cooler and a class 3 Hitch Receiver.
Good Luck.

I don't know if it's a YJ, CJ, or XJ. It's a 97, has round headlights, it does have an auto trans but it also has the tow package.

That would be a TJ and I would NOT tow over 20mph with that. I used to have one...not a tow vehicle.
CJ=pre 1986 Jeep
YJ=1987-1995 Square headlight Wrangler
TJ=1997-2006 Round Headlight Wrangler
JK=2007+ Wrangler
XJ=Cherokee Classic SUV

97 is a TJ......
capable of towing a boat, but not fast, not great braking for anything over
say 4k.... and
make sure you don't go into corners too fast, because the coils are a softer
ride than leafs, and not as predictable for turning while towing...
also, if it's lifted more than 2.5" inches, I would hesitate to tow with it at all.

Just don't wreck towing a 3,500# boat because your insurance will tell you to pound sand:eek: Don't tow over 1,000# with a TJ period...bad idea.

I have a 88 wrangler lifted with 33's and a inline 6 that I had balanced and gone through. I have changed teh gears and installed the larger radiator electric fans. It tows my 18' sleekcraft just fine. As long as I don't need to get out of any ones way, want to go up a hill faster than 45, I enjoy watching the temp gauge go up and down alot or I would like to STOP. It looks cool as hell going up and down the ramp but the rest of the time make sure you and your passengers either have a extra set of boxer's or at least hope the bastards that are with you are to drunk to care.
Seriously as far as going with the automatic FORGET IT. You will burn that automatic up fast.

78 CJ, 88 YJ, 89 YJ all can and or have towed up to a 23 footer short distances (10 miles). My 88 and 89 with 6cyl. towed a 21 footer from SF valley to laughlin once a month without a problem back about 15 years ago. Not the best breaking power with that big of a boat but never had a problem..

I towed our 16' Tahiti with our 81 CJ-5, no problem, but we only went a few miles each way. When we took it to Havasu, we used the RV to tow it and had a guy at the marina launch the boat for us.

I have stuffed my boat into the garage with mine. Even that is a sketchy proposition and I have an Unlimited.
And the HP rating...well lets just say it feels more like 90 hp.
And I am not even thinking about giving Bryan shit either. :D

I didn't read this whole thread but as a launch ramp vehicle ok, but to tow down the road for any distance...are you serious? The things can hardly tow themsleves not to mention the wheel base issue.
My tow vehicle in Havi was CJ5 with a V8 but it only went 2 miles to the ramp and back.
