PEORIA, AZ - At 1:42 AM on Friday November 9, 2007 the Phoenix Fire Department Regional Dispatch Center alerted Engine 197 of a houseboat fire on the Lake Pleasant main marina ramp. The lake is a popular recreational area 35 miles north of downtown Phoenix. Engine 197 had a 13 mile run ahead of them. Battalion Chief 192 was special called at 1:46 AM.
Peoria police arrived on scene at 1:54 AM and relayed to fire dispatchers that a 20' houseboat on the water at the dock was well involved and the fire had extended to surrounding watercraft. Based on this report E197 requested a 3-1 working fire assignment.
Companies dispatched were Engine 56, Tanker 56 and Utility 50 from Phoenix, Engine 146, Engine 142 and Ladder Tender 142 from the Daisy Mountain Fire District and Battalion Chief 131 from Sun City. Personnel to operate Peoria Fire Boat 199, not staffed at the hour of this fire, were notified as well.
E197 arrived at 2:00 AM and reported heavy fire conditions with extension to two other boats and the dock. Stretching hose lines to the dock created a big problem for all hands.
Battalion 192 arrived at 2:01 and established command. Battalion Chief 191 was special called at 2:03 AM and Helicopter 151 at 2:07 AM for reconnaissance. Recognizing an escalating situation, severe exposure problems and long response times command ordered a full first alarm assignment at 2:08 AM.
Companies on that dispatch were Ladder 131, Engine 131 from Sun City, Engine 145 from Daisy Mountain, Peoria Engine 192, Ladder 103 from Sun City West, Battalion Chief 152 and West Deputy Chief from Glendale and the North Deputy Chief from Phoenix. Responders had runs of between 15-29 miles.
30 minutes into the incident firefighters had cut loose a burning 20' houseboat from the dock. Unfortunately it had drifted to the other side of the lake where it endangered boats tied up there. Command deployed companies to that side of the lake thus creating two firefighting scenes. Citizens had garden hoses out trying to protect their boats. Surprisingly, given the time of day, there were quite a few spectators which created problems for firefighters.
Long hose lays continued to be a problem and drafting operations were being placed in service. The Safety Officer reported a total of 37 boats were endangered. Fire Boat 199 reported fire extension under the dock.
The dock fire was declared under control at 2:47 AM. A total of three burning boats had been set adrift, the houseboat described earlier, a 23' pleasure boat and an 18' pleasure boat which later sank.
The fires were declared under control at 2:53 AM and companies in staging were released shortly after that.
No injuries were reported. The Peoria Police, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality all assisted with this incident. The Alarm Room moved two engine companies into empty fire stations in the area for coverage.
