OK, don't laugh, but I'm looking for some feedback on the pros & cons of the new VW Beatle. My wife wants one and I know nothing about them. I'm considering getting her a convertible.

IF she gets one?she will make you drive it/her around and we will call you a FAG when we see you buy her a truck
No, no, no, that aint happening. She already has an Expedition and we're going to keep it. Hell, by wanting a new Beatle, she's saving me a lot of money because her other choice is a Mercedes SUV.

My favorite daughter-in-law just sold her new Beetle convertable because the rear visability was so poor she even thought it dangerous. Further, it didn't have enough room for her two kids and their homework and sports bags. It was a nice driver tho...

I am on my 4th. I just bought a red convertible and I love it except for the trunk - absolutely no room. Awesome gas mileage (non-turbo). I have had two turbos and didn't realize how much they suck the gas. I will keep this for another 2 years and move on to another one.

I saw one the other day and it was all lifted and had off road wheels. It looked pretty cool. Does that still make me gay?

How are to tops on the converts? Any leak problems?
It is my understanding that the new Beetle is just a re-body of another long standing VW front wheel drive chassis.
My 74 year-old mom is going to look for one next spring, she wants the ragtop/diesel.
Actually, she wants my '65-on-a-'70 pan, which I am going to sell, but I don't want her to have it...when it sells I never want to see it again.:( i'll mis it.

As long as you don't have to work on one I guess they are O.K. I have a autobody shop, and they are miserable to work on. Very strange they way many things are put together on them.

I have not had a leak and was pleasantly surprised about how quite they are on the freeway. I was expecting alot of noise but it is pretty quite. Easy up and down. Love my convertible.

A friend of mine had the convertible. She, her husband, and their two kids were driving home from Big Bear when they got in the middle of a pretty bad rock slide. The car took quite a banging--the damages were more than the car was worth. However, all four of them emerged with only a few bruises. Even the glass did not cut anyone. So as for safety, I would give it a thumbs up.
But I would still get her a truck. My K-5 Jimmy eats those things for lunch

Thanks for all the comments. This is going to be her car to drive to work (10 miles round trip) and to run her errands up and down the mountain (we live in Lake Arrowhead). That car will be parked in the winter and she will drive her Expedition during the winter months. I won't be caught in it and it's going to save a ton in gas.
What's the maintenance like on them?
