Finally got time to work on the new tow rig. Gonna be alot of work to get it complete but it is coming along nice.
First pic. is stock straight from the factory to my house and started tearing it apart the first day. (12-24-05)
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/555ATT00008.jpg
Started with the rear suspension first, doing a 12" lift all the way around. Also after over a month searching everywhere for a dually bed I finally was able to find one at a dealership that was a brand new take off.

Well its a start for now. As soon as I can find a company that will make the front springs she will be drivable, nobody wants to make the springs now :yuk: . I will take the bed off next week and get that all painted then start shaving everything and have the truck repainted. I have started on making a new 180gal. gas tank so that the ones under the doors can be removed as well as the steps. Once everything is clear under the doors I will be making some steps simular to the Kodiaks but they will have two steps since I do not think that one is going to cut it.
The front differential should be here next month and as soon I a find a transfercase for the Allison I will be doing the 4x4 conversion. I will try to update as it is coming along if anyone is interested.

I wish the front of the cheby looked better cause it would be so much less work-avail. with bed and 4x4 on the chevy.

That one looks great, I have seen that a few. I was originally going to do a 6 door with the excursion back end but decided that I needed the bed more. Then once I order the truck the plan was to make it 6 door, but once the truck was delivered I was told the frame was to short to do the conversion.
What motor and trans is in there.
Thanks KELLY

Question...
Are you going to cut the frame since the bed you put on is way shorter?

No way the extra frame keeps people from smashing the pretty paint(well once it is painted)

Yeah, it will be cut down, I had just finished getting the height and centering then took the photo's. It's just sitting on railroad ties so there is alot more to go.

Well I finally got time to work on the truck again after 4 months or so of it just sitting. There is alot of work to go still but I am hoping by the end of this month I will be able to start rolling it around town a lil bit. There is alot involved in getting this thing to look right. I have taken off all the steps, taken off both full tanks and replumed the wiring and lines for the new tank. I need to take of the air tanks and mount them under the cab so that they will not be seen. I need to mount the batteries under there as well and rewire everything with longer cables (not liking that part). Got alot more stuff to do but this will keep me busy for a few.
Here are the following updates, I hope there is still some interest:
These first photo's are of the bed frame that I made. The bed sits about 10" off of the frame so I needed to make some type of support to go under the bed. I did not like the way that I had seen most done which is using some 2-3" bar in just a few places, so I made another frame made out of the same channel as the original frame and placed it on top of the original. This will be the home of my new 100 gallon polished stainless fuel cell, and will also house a large compartment for air line, impact, etc. for the dunes.

Now the fun really begins, tearing out the front end. I am getting ready to lift the front end, I did not have much luck with getting a set of springs made that I would be happy with so I figured I would try something else. Once everything is done later on down the road I will probably go to a four link setup with airbags but that is going to take some time and lots of work so that will wait. Everything on this truck is so damn big it is a pain to take of anything. Yesterday I spent most of the day cutting off rivets that hold most of the brackets. The front axle weighs about 1200pounds on my scale, so hard to move stuff to mock up all by myself in a little garage...

Excessive.....yeah a little. :)
Practical.... not at all, but that is what the other vehicles are for. :)
Show rig... will make an appearance at a few of the fun shows, but not full on show, more of a wow factor.
Towing... just boats and have just ordered a custom 53' santek stacker for the dunes that might weigh a little..

Not sure if you still need springs, but you may want try Betts Spring in NorCal. They've done a lot of custom springs for us.

I was able to get some work done this weekend. Got the front subframe all welded up and then powdercoated. Since I was having a hard time getting springs I dropped the front hangers down to create my lift. I wanted to keep the weight cap. the same so this worked out great. Everything is made to just bolt up so incase I change things it is no big deal. The stock springs rode pretty good so they should be fine once I ad the King Kong shocks (it came with no shocks, so this should help even more). Now I just gotta do some measuring for my backspacing all the way around then add the tires...

I don't think that I will be matching the boat, but the orange will be simular. Working with an artist on some designs so I might do something totally different now.
The rear shackles are being redone, when I originally built those I did not take into acount how much the springs would open up with all the weight. So I have started on a new shackle setup that will be more like a f-250/350 where the shackle angles are up and not down. Definately a learning process for me on something this big.....

Other than being a commercial veh. in a residential zone I should be alright. Being that the GVW is so high I can get away with a much higher frame height than a normal truck. I will also be filling in the lights on the front and moving them to the bumper and doing something with the rear lights. I should be pretty legal..

I got mine out of bakersfield at
Jim Burke Ford
2001 Oak Street
Bakersfield, Ca 93301
and my salesman (who I highly recomend) was
Ken Barnes 661 328 3600
Any ford dealership can order you a F650, just not all can order any motor. My local dealership could only order with a powerstroke. And another local one could just do a powerstroke and cummins. It just depends on what there shop is qualified for. There was only a handful of dealers in so-cal that could order the cat motors. I also went to...shit cant think of the name, they were near riverside I think, but they supposedly were the #1 dealer for F650's but they did not have there shit together at all. With the same exact truck their price was $18,000 more....
If I were to do it all again I would not of ordered half the options I did and would have ordered a longer wheelbase so I could add another set of doors. That is why this one will probably hit the market when completed.

Yeah, I have seen one lowered and it does not look bad at all, but this is for the dunes and desert so need it big and with 4x4.
There was an old 70's semi that was slammed to the ground on airbags that had beautiful body lines, large round fenders molded to some running boards like an 40's era truck, that was orange and grey to match the boat. I tried for months to find the guy to see if he was interested in selling, but no luck.

After about a month of grinding/welding/sanding/smoothing the frame is all painted for now. Just got to wet sand and polish next week then everything will be going back together. Had to fill 86 holes total. Welded and smoothed on both sides :D :D Not fun.....

beautifull job on the frame rails, I had to do the same on my Peterbilt when I changed the suspension....very time consuming...but well worth it....

Besides the fealing of knowing you built it, was there a big benefit in buying one that hasn't already been converted. I'm asking because i'm trying to buy one

When I ordered this almost two years ago they were not as popular as now and very hard to find done. I could have paid a shop to do it much quicker but I would be around $50,000-$60,000 lighter in the wallet.. My joy is building more than driving it, and my guess would be as soon as its done it will be sold and then on to the next project. :D :D

Well it is almost drivable now. Just got to finish welding the hitch and receiver then get the shocks done and ladder bars that that will be it till winter time.... Then the 4x4. Pretty much had to rewire the whole truck so that everything was longer. Put all new air lines on as everything was relocated and hidden. All the air tanks/ batteries/lines/hoses were moved so they were hidden.
Now just time to enjoy it for a few and get any bugs out so I can take it to the river for the summer...
Finished the fuel tank... 128 gallons should give me some range...

Nice work. Did you make templates of the custom pieces you made? Would be a great way to sell and offset the build costs a bit.. Nice rig!

I did take notes of everything I did so I could recreate another one very easily. I will be putting this one up for sale eventually and will be starting on another so that should make it easier..

It rides 1000xs better then stock.. I drove it 100 miles home when it was stock and it was harsh.. Once I get the shocks and a few other things done it will ride even better... Gotta love the 3/4" to the bumpstop for the stock rear suspension-tons of travel:D :D ..

I am a craftsman, and although I respect and appreciate someones ability to buy a truck like this I have the utmost respect for some that build this himself as you did........

Thanks man, People always ask who/where did it and never believe it was done in the driveway (nice and sloped on top of that) then they can never believe that I did all the work being 26.. :D :D They best part for me is I only sent out one thing, the bed to be sprayed as I did not want to piss off the neighborhood more than I already do... Thanks for the words, it feels great..

I also am looking to do the same truck would you suggest the air ride in the rear? what is the cab to axle length? I am looking to do only the bed for know wich shouldnt be that difficult? (any welding or just drilling new holes for the suspension mounts) do you also reccomend the option for the battery boxes under the pass side cab? they say it is an option.
thx,
chris

Very cool! I love custom trucks!
That rear driveshaft is rediculous though, you going to put a "strap" around that to keep it in place if it blows?
Do you still have the transfer case in there? (did it ever even have one being an F-650?) The angle seems extreme for a front shaft. Sorry for all of the comments, just really curious! I love this stuff.
*EDIT:* After looking at the picture a little closer, it appears that you have something holding that rear shaft.
