I am thinking of picking up the Harmon Kardon AVR 147. I can get it for about $240.
Anyone have any opinions?

I have a AVR 310 that is 8 years old. The thing is bullet proof. They make a great product.

Pretty high current output in comparison to most of the foreign junk, probably a good deal.

Nice if it is for a small room and you don't need the latest HD sound formats.

If you are going to be doing video switching thru the receiver, then yes, but just having HDMI is not enough. Now, if you want to be future proof, you at least need a receiver with HDMI version 1.3 to be able to do 1080p/60 1080p/24 and all the new HD sound formats. For $240 though, it is a good deal and easier to justify upgrading later if need be.

For 240...you are not going to get much...if you want HDMI 1.3 with Switching....look at the Onkyo's....the 705 and the 805 are two nice receivers for the money...and today at Circuit City you could an 805 from them online with pickup in the store for 699....then buy a $1 10% off CC discount on Ebay and it really gets to be a good deal....for a receiver that equals features on receivers that are in the 2K price range...

Those are amazing receivers for the price, I don't know how they are putting all those features in them for what they are selling them for.

Don't forget the Ipod dock for it.....that 430 is a sick price...

Thanks for being more specific on the video switching, I could not agree more. I have a Yamaha RXV-2600, 910 watts, and switching. Lights up the room, and I got it off of E Bay used for one half of the original price. the new Dennon stuff is suppose to be even better.

Order it online at CC and pick it up for 1749.99 plus tax. Less hassle to return if a problem with it than if shipped. Great t.v though, with the LED engine, the bulb is supposed to last 180,000 hours and one of the better pictures out there.
I guess I was typing as you were posting, either way it's a good deal.

It is suppose to last a conservative 20,000 hours, so expect 30, at the most depending on how high you have your brightness and contrast levels.

I don't know but I have never had much luck with the Onkyo. I have a DTR 7.3 that I paid about $1200 for and I keep having problems with certain capacitors within the unit. It is the Integra line for professional but is the same as you can buy at CC under the Onkyo brand, don't know the crossover model # right off hand. I think an inexpensive option could be the Yamaha line. I just picked one up for around $500 with 1080P HDMI and dual zone. I like it for the price.

I just replaced a 3 year old 5.5 Integra...never had an issue...still works like day 1... Maybe you got a bad unit.. I bought Denon unit a couple years back and it continued to have pops at turn off/on...but all reviews were rave about the unit.
On Yamaha...I was close to getting the new 1800 before going with the 805...they make nice gear.

I'm sure the build quality is better in the 4000 series (at least I sure hope so for the $$), but I've got a 3801 and 3805 and they have been perfect. Unless you mean models in the last couple of years?
Of course I'll prob go home now and find both units fried to a crisp.

Its not as bad as computers, as long as you get one that supports all the formats. Like when I purchased my Pioneer Elite TX45, it supported everything out there. Now 4 years later, there are new formats because of HD DVD and BD. Just get one that supports all the new HD formats and something with HDMI 1.3 and it will last another 4 years. Your 36 has 5.1 inputs, so it can last you a little bit longer if you get an HD player that has the 5.1 outputs and decodes the new formats.

I would demo the recievers also if you can, especially the spendy ones. I know on my Swan speakers the yamaha was overly bright and rather harsh. My Pioneer is a tad on the mellow side with them. Right now I'm kinda torn between the Denon and the Pioneer.

Being that my hubby was in the biz for most of his life and is still around it a lot...we have a lot of great setups. Nothing over the top, but still some great setups. Onkyo is what we now have in both houses. We also have some crazy remote that lights up when it gets moved and asks you "What do you want to do?" on the screen. Not as cool as the Red Rock Suites have, but it's our own little "home version". :D
Good luck with your setup, sounds like you're getting a lot of good answers here. :)

I originally purchased the 5.1's, but they came with a bad driver, so the owner felt bad and sent me a new pair of 6.1's for my troubles. He even picked up the shipping for the 6.1's and the returning 5.1's. I had the C3 with the tweeter mounted on top of the outside, I know they stop making them like after a while. When I sold all the Divas, I didn't loose any money as the 6.1's were more expensive and was able to sell them for the cost of new 5.1's.

Thats good, he seems like a pretty good guy. Since I've never listened to the 6.1's (he has a pair of 5.1's cheap right now) How did ya like the larger speakers, worth the extra? I wanna pick up the mids I'm lacking.

Now the Adio Insider sells the Swans, but when they first came out for a couple of year they were owned by Mark Schifter who help design the speakers and owner of av123.com.
The 6.1's are great speakers, they will fill up a large room real good and are just as good off axis. The mids are clear and don't struggle even at high volumes. With the sub you have tho, I would probably stick with the 5.1's. I have dual subs, so I did not need the 6.1's, but go them for the same price as the 6.1's so I could not resist.
I forgot to mention that the 5.1's I purchased were B-stock and I still got new 6.1's for my troubles, which was not a big deal at all. All I was expecting was a replacement 5.1 at best.

HK is great stuff and that's great deal on a receiver that will last you many many years, I currently have a new AVR 745 that is incredible. As for the Onkyo and Denon they are awesome as well, can't go wrong with any of them but I personally like the HK.
Good luck with whatever you grab and have fun on AVSforums
