It seems like the pioneers are dropping like flies lately. Back when you built it in your garage without corporate backing or liability insurance... just ingenuity and determination. No wonder this country's in the toilet now........

When I was in jr. high school my friend's dad took us to the the drag races at a small drag strip in central MI. The strip was on property that had formerly been a cropduster runway in the middle of farm country. The starting line and staging area were next to a road and oposite the site was a gate that entered some field.
Art's brother Walt had his jet dragster there that day to run a couple exhibition passes. About 2 hours into the event they brought the jet into the staging area and turned it onto the track. Sitting on the gate across the road, directly behind the right hand lane there were about 6-8 field workers watching the races for free.
The free watching had gone well to this point but when the big jet "fired up" it blew flame and a big heat cloud directly backward. The boys on the gate all fell off backwards like birds off a wire. None were hurt and it looked hilarious from the stands.
The Arfons Bros. were pioneers in jet drag racing and tractor pulls. Really good people.

I remember the speed wars between Arfons and Criag Breedlove......it introduced me to the powerful mystique of Bonneville.
Another one of my childhood heros is gone.
