Don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just spend the money and fix it with Merc parts.
How do I know? I had a kit done and it lasted about 3 months. The repair place had put JB weld in it to smooth the grooves. Lesson Learned..... Do it right the first time.

I went 2 years before needing it fixed. During my second service the shop suggested the kit. Needless to say they aren't working on our boats now.

Every other year or 100 hours is quite safe - unless you stick the outdrive in sand often.

I have the impeller changed annually, regardless of hours. Usually, not always the tech can tell if you need a pump by the impellers condition.

Very true. Havasu tends to be a little worse if you beach a lot. I know people that have gone thru 2 impellers and a pump in 1 season.

While we're on this subject MAKE SURE your tech pulls the drive. Here's what Throttles Cobra's bellows"sp?" looked like.

I have thought of that
my pump after 20 hrs had grooves in the housing like the one in pics above after seeing that I will change the impeller every year. small price for big hassel on the water

that is what we found when i shattered a gimbal bearing. The bearing was shattered due to some rust beginning from a leaking bellows.

Scott, I know how you are about your boat... dont do it. Use stock, just replace the whole thing. I am due for replacement soon as well. I generally replace my impeller every year at the beginning of spring, last year I skipped doing it. I plan on just replacing the water pump with a new one. Its a bitch to get to it with the newer HO's, but after you take the rear seat out of your boat it will make things a bit easier to reach...
