I would say yes. Unfortunate in thees days, but I see a good old boy mentality there, and I think it's due to it's primarily white, elderly population.
Here are: the demographics:
Races in Lake Havasu City:
White Non-Hispanic (89.5%)
Hispanic (7.9%)
Other race (2.5%)
Two or more races (1.5%)
American Indian (1.3%)

Can't say that I have ever encountered any negativity there as far as discrimination. Thus far it has been a fairly friendly place to me. This coming from a Mexican. I think it's all in how you present yourself to people that gets you labeled. Whenever I go into a business or what have you, I try to greet people with a pleasant hello. I usually get a friendly reply and it's obvious that whatever potential for disliking me because I'm Mexican is deminished. Just my experience an .02

Advice.......on the LHC resume
Tone it down for LHC, keep it short and simple, don't rely on the fax or mail, Havasu is small.....go in person to present the resume... esp if it's your lovely wife doing the presenting.

I'd agree with this 100%....
You walk in the same place the next day wearing a white wife beater ribbed tank, shorts that look like half-pants and a safety chain on your wallet your experience would be different I'm sure. Certain mannerisms and your outward appearance people will pre-judge you........whether you're white, black, mexican, oriental or whatever.........its human nature to make assumption by what you've seen on TV.
I've not really run accross the issue when in Havi by locals...but I've overheard remarks by boaters at the Sandbar.

Tell her to tone down the big city sophisticated look and put on her ugly face. :)

Well there's her problem! She is way over dressed. Just give her $5 bucks and have her buy an outfit at WALMART! If she can wait til Wednesday, I think the new fashions will arrive and she'll be the talk of the town! It doesn't help either that she goes cruisin on up in a fully loaded deisel truck either! Maybe consider a run down ford escort, something that doesn't say " Hey, I have a DCB! Do I really want to work for/with you?". GOOD LUCK!

tone it down........low key on the resume...don't want them to think you cost too much right off the bat. maybe "Education history provided upon request"

That does not appear to be right at all. Maybe they think her salary demands would be too much? But that's a lame-ass reason as well. Just spit-balling here. Also, what about the Surgery Center? She may want to try there if she hasn't already.

Do you think that maybe having an L.A. area home address on the resume may have an adverse effect on being considered for a position? Is the general consensus internally within the job force there to hire "locals" over "out of towners" ? instead of racial profiling, they may in fact feel that they cannot afford her. Just my .02

I have a friend that relocated to Buckeye and experienced outright discrimation concerning his beautiful Hispanic wife. Couldn't get into the hospital fields at all, finally got a job in a bank and the locals would stand in line for the "white" teller rather than allow her to serve them......They moved back to Newbury Park after 3 months.........He couldn't believe it..........MP

She does.
Miguel,
What's Yvonne's "specialty". Nurse-Med Assist. Coding/billing/administration, etc.
Maybe we can steer her in the right direction.
If she doesn't have one of those Tribal ID cards, there probably isn't anything in the medical support field at Kathy's facility, although they do hire anyone qualified for nursing and other technical spots. Matter of fact there's openings in nursing right now. A RN at 60Gs a year (Community Health Nurse.)
But Kathy was in the Private sector for 13 years, and has a few constituents. Let me know.

Nothing at the Indian facility. They ship out all their surgeries. But La Paz Regional may have something.
With the demographics in the Parker area, there won't be any appearance of "discrimination" against minorities. If there was. there wouldn't be anyone working there.
Edited...Scratch that. No OB work done at La Paz either. (I had to ask the wife what L & D stood for.)
Try directly to the Doctors. Dr. Russo or Dr. Nelson. No relation, although he did deliver my son 25 years ago, and my granddaughter 12 years ago.

Right, but her resume will show So. Cal as her most recent place of employment and therefore they can have a 'general' idea about what her wages are/were. Not saying it is right, because it is not.

The problem is the pay scale. Can you afford to make 1/5th of what you are making now? This town is still back in the 1970's as far as pay goes. The business owners here are "old timers" and they are very protective of their positions. Many have little education, others are just very tight. You may come into the LHPD and find out that you could qualify to be chief next week. Your wife may find out the same thing in her line of work. BUT!!!! The (backward, for lack of better term) people here, tend to go for the LOW PAYING DEAD HEAD PEOPLE! Then they complain to the local paper. They advertize in the local paper, BUT, they NEVER OFFER REALISTIC PAY!!! Own your own business, or die! Good luck!

My uncle (who is white) owns a house and several properties in town, but was shut down when he wanted to build storage units for boats. He definitely ran into the "good old boy" network who did not seem to want an outsider from Cali coming to town to compete with the locals. So I would say there is discrimination out there, but not based on race.

I've never been to Havasu but have a couple of buddies who went out there a few years back to make sales calls on the hotels in the area. They went in the winter and came back with this report: Sh!t hole, armpit, dump, trailer park, truck stop, campground, grease spot, etc, etc. Now these guys travel the world and know nothing of boating so their report was not a surprise, but you get the idea of what the non-boater might think of the place and the people.

Yeah.. In the hotel business it's all about how much you can get per room per night. The big bucks are in the big draws - business centers where lots of douchebags in 1K suits fly in & out regularly, pay rack & oil up their equally douchebag clients in the hotel bar & restaurant. Havasu isn't that market.

That wasn't my point - neither am I and neither are most people. Most Ballers are rolling on somebody else's dime anyway. My point was that havasu is a sub-prime hospitality/hotel market - nothing more. That assessment can sometimes extend to other segments of the economy as well.

Probably...
My uncle has done well for himself and was looking to put some money into something else but gave up on Havasu after the road blocks he ran into. He owns several board and care homes in So.Cal. which are heavily regulated so he is aware of the usual hoops you have to jump through, but he said havasu was just rediculous (sp).

We were just at the surgery center, didn't see one other then person of color. They are VERY picky there. Most all who work there were hand picked. And yes there service was over the top, best we have had here in town.
This town is very much who you know not what you know.
If your wife is walking in, in a 1k outfit she will never get an interview.
Our pay scale is way out of wack. Most couples here have to work to pay the bills.
I beleive that there is still a lot of descrimination here. Being a very light skinned Mexican, people will say things to me that they would never say to your face. I here it all...
Good luck......

I've been here a few years and I don't think it's Havasu, but a small number of it's citizens. Some of the older people here have a 'closed mind' about 'people not "like" them', but most others don't suffer that mental problem. I do think many of the business owners here are actually afraid of hiring 'smart' or 'educated' people, and many treat employees badly, letting them know 'who's boss!" every day. This is making small business growth slow in Havasu, because bright, energetic workers are being "used up" and without replacements, the business just goes stagnent. Havasu (businesses) are very afraid of rising labor costs, they refuse to let it happen, and the state of Arizona won't change it's laws. How can business owners expect competent, prompt, trustworthy, workers on $6/$8 per hour? In and Out Burgers starts @$8, and local businesses expect people to 'dress for work', and 'handle cash', and even, 'offer personal service' for $6 per hour. I feel Havasu is open to everyone, everyone WITH MONEY! Havasu does have rediculous requirements for business construction, that's why I'll never build a shop in Havasu city limits. Of course, Havasu will bend over all of it's tax payers if you are a big corporation and want CHEAP LABOR!

I think it's more of a loss for LHC... Someone with her experience and expertise and able to make good decisions in a fast paced environment is a HUGE plus in the medical field.
Too bad... What about Blythe or BHC, or is that too far a drive?

She Actually did her two internship at Cedars Sinai in L.A. worked for some of the best Plastic Surgeon's in Beverly Hills, then made her specialty in L & D at one of the top Trauma centers in L.A. and two other Great Hosptials.
Enough, This is depressing me....

What do you think?
Now before you type away, Think about what im asking!
Who is helping you in all aspects of havasu and who is in the background that you never see......
I would like to know why you would even ask this?
What about the city in which you reside in?
I just think it's interesting that you would post this with
nothing behind it.

I unfortunately feel there is a racial bias out there, but even more so, I feel there is a bias against non-locals.
Can't really blame them for not hiring people they feel might not last, or for wanting to protect there local economy by hiring residents.

Your wife is to advanced to go to work in a hospital in havasu. i don't want to hurt anyones feelings but they just aren't technologically advanced enough to keep her interest. If she is bored now she would die there. It's a fun place to visit but I wouldn't work there.....v-drive

Ok, let me get this right? Because your wife can't get
a job in Havasu, they are being discriminating?
Is that the jest of it?
I would HAVE to think there is a little more to this,

reference to your wife trying to get a job.

I have read every post in this thread and feel that this one makes the most sense of all. There is descrimination in all aspects everywhere you go. Unfortunately you have to figure out how to crack the code. Which probably goes back to "its not what you know, but who you know". I have dealt with different types of descrimination all my life. I just try and out smart them. Yvonne you are a very intelligent person, I know you'll find another way to skin the cat...GOOD LUCK..PLYA!!

I'm sure I won't. Not to sound racist because if anyone knows me I am not. But, I am sure it is different in Havasu when you are spending money versus trying to make it. Yes, I would say that race may play a little part in it. Maybe not with everyone, so if it doesn't pertain to you, ignore it!! That is why the toleration level is so high on the big weekends. I have talked to several residents/business oweners who hate the big weekends, but there is too much $$$ to be made.So they deal with it. Think about it!

But your my boat Mexican! LMAO. See you on Thursday.
..and the best one at that, I really would like to break out of the minimum wage though.....or more bud light..lol
If you want a good example of how bad it is here, I went to work for the school district when we moved here, A/C tech. 19 years on the job, a degree in HVAC, able to work on anything from a water cooler to a 120 ton chiller. My contract paid one third of what I was making in Calif. and they do it with a straight face.
Most of the Mexican work force here is in construction, and jobs that don't require a lot of education. I work on 90% of the hotels here and have yet to see a non Mexican in the house keeping dept. I also found the numbers hard to believe, I think there is a higher population of non documented people here then we are led to believe.
Any way, this town has a long way to go in our labor force. It is so hard to find good labor at any level. I would think they would be waiting with open arms for a person of your caliber. I really hope it's not a race issue.
Good luck, let me know what happens after the first of the year, I too could make a few calls and see what I can do....Good luck....
