Hey it hit 60F here on the beautiful blue waters of Lake Norman today. Even the Lake lice were out, pestering the bass boaters.
It's the least the weather could do for a place thats further south in latitude than Las Vegas.

It was warm in Georgia too, I was going to go for a boat ride but spent too long moving the dock. I've had to move the dock in several times in the last month or so. How's the water level doing there? Lake Lanier is the highest it's been sinc 1998 and looks sure to hit full pool in the near future.

Hey 572,
We're within 12" of full pond- I burn limbs and yard waste on the beach in the winter, usually. Not THIS year! It's submerged...
JBR, thanks! Only thing is warm winter air usually brings rain. And it is doing just that.
Wettest drought I've ever experienced.

Glad to here the water is up. I live in south GA
but take my pump boat to Clarks Hill lake for VAC.
Last year it was 18 foot down. All the boaters said it Hotlanta gets rain it brings Clarks hill up. If you ever get down this way I can take you out in the StMarys River for some black water boating. Must be nice to be close to Pro-boat service. Tim doing my pump now.

Supposed to hit a high of 39 today with 50's the rest of the week. Winter will be over soon. Waterslinger, what part of GA do you live in? As for being close to Pro Boat, I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. I had a not so pleasant experience with my boat there, but everyone else seems to have good luck with Tim so I guess it is just me.

Anybody who lives down stream on Potomac or James rivers LOOK OUT we are getting enough rain in the mountains that this snow is gonna come off all at once .... and it aint gonna be pretty... eek! I suppose the west side of the divide is bad as well ... The Kanawa ,New ,OHIO .... all are gonna get ALOT of water today... I'd rather have the snow !

Your right Moo, the Kanawha is coming up pretty fast. Met Dan66 in Morgantown this morning. His buddy bought my friends Hondo runnerbottom and we met there this morning, rained all the way up. But on the way back, the sun came out and it is now 66 deg. and sunny.

Beverly and I rode down along the NewRiver this afternoon, looks pretty bad. Lots of houses are already flooding in narrows and a great many more are in danger. Up here in where we live , the road going to our shop is under about 3'of water, the shop is in no danger, but it will take a boat to get to it. WV boating in Feb! Tim

JetBoatRich
02-22-2003, 07:22 PM
Does it flood there all the time?

MANIC MECHANIC
02-23-2003, 07:44 AM
If you mean at the shop, yes, we can count on the road being underwater at least once a year. Although this is the earliest in the year I can remember it flooding ,usually it happens later in the spring.Last spring, I was in water chest deep by the time I finished blocking up an excavator(to keep it above the rising water) that we were working on. I put it 4' up on blocks and still the water level got up to the top of the tracks before finally dropping. I guess that will teach me to work on something down by the lake in flood season! JetBoatRich

I would have to say time to move the shop or do you just put everything on the second floor?

MANIC MECHANIC
02-23-2003, 01:54 PM
The shop is on land that is built up about 10' above the surrounding area. I have seen the water reach the base of the slope once in the 23yrs we have been there and can't imagine the shop ever being in danger. Tim smile_sp

Hey JBR,
It got warm here again today. Hit about 60F, but it wasn't that pleasant because of the 45mph gusts we had. Lake Norman looked like the freakin' Atlantic Ocean out there. Alot of rain Friday/Saturday and the lake's up, too, and flash flooding in the mountains is a problem.

The rains have certainly helped the lake levels here, Lake Lanier is at full pool, the first time since 1998. Here is a before and after pic of my doc with the water down and at the current level. If I wanted to take the 2nd picture from the same place as the 1st I would have had to get my wading boots on :)

Just wondered how your dock was anchored- I think I see some cables etc from the corners. Nice that you can let it out as the water drops. I've got a pier about 80' out, with a floating platform next to the lift. I've got a pic somewhere....How do you like that setup?

Dave, my dock is ancored by cables which do a great job of keeping the dock moving out or side to side but I also have stkakes at the front of the ramp to keep it from moving in. Lanier is a Corps of Engineers lake and they are very specific on what you can use, both your dock and lifts have to be floating, docks are limited to a maximum size of 32'x32' and ramps no more than 40'
Some people also have poles that they lower into the bottom to keep the dock from moving along with the cables and wheels on the front of the ramp. This is probably the best arrangement, to move the dock out just lift up the poles and use a 2x4 under the ramp to push it out. To move the dock in raise the poles and crank in the cables to move it up the beach. My neighbor's dock is like this:

Well, now the lake is REALLY full. Neighbor's fixed dock is under water a few inches (told that clown that he needed to raise it on the pilings!) I've got alot of debris up in the yard, and all the ice-storm-related pine branches I was gonna burn on the beach (which I usually have acres of this time of year) are submerged. Wondered why the bass fishermen have been hanging around in this cove lately. Boat lift is at the end of the cables- and the outdrive is still in the water.
But the sun's out, and it's in the low 70's :D :D

Yep, finally cleared off here on Fri/Sat. Lake Norman got so full I had water over the boatlift, and lickin' on the vee-bottom. Neighbor's pier was submerged- told him years ago he needed to raise it up! Water is in the yard, along with every bit of lake trash that normally gets floated onto my beach- now in the yard! I looked out into the channel Sun morning and saw building materials floatin' around- a couple of 2x10's off somebody's dock project ended up in our cove. Mine now! Glad nobody hit that stuff. Woulda made a big bang back at the ole outdrive. And messed up a perfectly good piece of treated lumber, too.
Man, I feel for the folks downriver- for every foot that Norman goes up or down, the next lake south gets nailed- 10' shift at times. Look out South Carolina, we're sending you some of that water you were moanin' about not having last year.
Be careful what you wish for...
