I recal a conversation with a young man who was qoating his 1974 Thunderbird (Formula) as the original powerboat. Let me turn the bill around here It realy breaks my heart to see that our history of the early years are forgotten lets not forget Christopher Columbus Smith (founder of Chris Craft) or Garfield Arthur Wood AKA Gar Wood (From Iowa like myself)these guy's legacy was laid out in the 1920's and they are not the first to race across the chop Gar wood invented the dump truck got rich got together with the Smith Boat works (Chris Craft) and bought his first race boat and together they took the gold cup numerous times and took the Harmsworth tophy from England in the original Miss America back in 1921.
Look @ the Hickman Sea Sled (Boston Whaler) from the 1920's This is basicly the original Cat.

Since the topic is oldschool power boating, I thought I would pop this in here. My Dad and brother are finishing their first boat. They found a clean 1960 Newman 16-19' runabout that just needed a new interior and cleaning. It had the original motor but they got a deal ($750)on a boat that had been holed right after the owner had rebuilt the 1978 OMC 115 hp. It is running great, but from what they are saying, I think they need a new prop. I am going down tomorrow to see what it has now and take pics. I will post when I get them processed.

they may have ****ed up hairdues and check out the zuit suits wrong pic but that guy sitting high in the back is Gar Wood he set a world water speed record of I think somwher around 160 mph in 1920 or 1921 he use surplused air plane motors left over from ww 1 12 cylinders and a bow rudder instead of a rear and he smoked everyone in the corners as well as the straits the Britts laughed at his bow rudder the first time he took the harmsworth trophy from the the following year they incorperated his bow rudder.

That Forward Prop sounds like it could be something the only prob would be to much load to run em uless you whent with a rediculouse ratio on your shaft to help with a little thrust. but any how thats cool

Sorry I will have to throw more to yah tomarow the pics are kinda a pain to do big groups of so tomarrow I will hit my old books and bring more tomarow It is good that there is someone out there that digs this stuff I as a prospecting boat designer and manufacturer have learned alot about boats by looking in the past I have books with designs from the early 1900's to the 1950's I have a boat trade directory from 1917 throgh 1918 I was thinking about diong a quick crash post on navigation however my sources of info comes from wwI dated mat wwII mat some in between one from the 1960's I have a text book published by higgins boat works during wwII back when they built a large percentage of the US & Alied forces Boats all the way from Pickets to PT's to Air Force recovery boats So a majority of my navigation facts are textbook combat manuvers and proceedures.
