For the last 3 or 4 weeks i just can't sleep. Other than kicking one out and taking Valium is there any good tricks out there to make me sleep? I finally get to sleep at like 4am. It is getting old. I am tired, i just can't sleep. Any advice?

If the body gets sufficiently fatigued, a natural response is adrenaline. This is what some people know as being over tired.
I get like this often. I find that going for a walk helps. I know it's cliche but I've often gone for a 10-15 minute walk late at night. It doesn't take much. When I get home, I don't necessarily feel that tired but I go straight to bed. It pretty much always works. You may want to try it.
I feel bad for you. It can be a serious problem that really impacts quality of life.

Usually if I can't sleep it's because I'm thinking or worried about something and my mind just won't shut down for the night. In that case I go lay down on the couch with the tv on really low. The distraction takes my mind off whatever it was I was thinking about and boom, zzzzzzzz... sleeping

Well I won't comment on the kicking of anything out wink
...but I will give some suggestions as listed in my medical book:
Make note, these are not may words, they are straigh from my healthy mind healthy body book :D
Skip the stimulants:
Caffeine, medications, alcohol, nicotine, etc...
Skip the sleeping pills...they will only prolong the problem. Use only on a one time basis.
Heavy meals before bedtime is a no-no, but a light carb snack (ie cookies, toast) can actually help you sleep (increases brain serotonin, chem that triggers sleep)
a 20 minute nap is encouraged in the mid-afternoon.
decrease amount of fluids the hours before bedtime, reduces full blatter wake up call.
exercise can help you sleep better.
comfortable bed in a dark, quiet, and cool room is the best setting for good sleep (between 65-70 degrees)
wake up at the same time of the day regardless of what day it is, you need to set your bio clock, this way it will begin to know what time it needs to go to sleep...takes a few weeks before a rutine is set.
during those few weeks, set a bedtime and stick to it. Do not go to bed any earlier then the allowed hours needed...ie: if you need 8 hours of sleep and you are waking up at 6am...do not go to bed before 10pm at night.
If you do not fall asleep within 30 minutes, then get up wait another 30 minutes and try again.
You may not like this one wink ONLY use your bed for sleeping. Do not read, watch tv, etc in bed, only get into bed when you are ready to sleep (your body will adjust to the rutine and will eventually realize that when you get into bed it tiggers sleep is next to come.
All of these things are to reset your internal sleep clock.
Do not force yourself to sleep, the harder you try the longer you'll stay awake. Instead focus on some relaxing breathing exercises.
If you're organized keep a sleep log. If your insomnia persists for six months or is seriously affecting your daytime functioning (job, relationships, etc) seek professional help.
There you have it, those are some suggestions I have found for the time being...I will post some links in a while.
Sweet Dreams!!! :)

I forgot to mention...once when I was traveling to the UK I was worried about having Jet Lag and sleeping problems so I bought some serotonin pills from the health food store and some other something another...anyhow, I took one to fall alseep and as soon as I woke up I took the other and I never suffered from jet lag, it helped to set my body's clock onto UK time while everyone else was suffering from Jet Lag I was ready to go :D
SO there is another suggestion, taking the (I think it was melatonin) in the AM and helping to set your clock straight??? Check with a your health food store before you take my uneducated word for it...it was one of those "MJ19 experiments" I tried and it worked, but that doesn't mean it's proven science :D

I find if I stay up too late I can't get to sleep. A second wind of some sort keeps me awake. Adrenaline as noted above, I guess.
Try waking up early say 5:00 and going for a walk or run. By the end of the day you will be pretty darn tired. I get up early and go out for a run, try to go to bed by 10:00 or 10:30.
Rarely a problem any more. Good Luck.

ok ...I totally agree meds are a last resort but....if all else fails try Benadryl or unisom. Both OTC and work well dont waste time on all the different brands. All of them Except the Unisom ARE benadryl also known as diphenhydramine hydrochloride. If they're a no go call the MD and get some Ambien or Dalmane. both work well. Maybe if it's anxiety some Xanax would help. Just my .02

I probably average about 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night. Between working and too many friends that party almost non-stop, that's about all I have time for. The past 2 nights we didn't get in until about 3am, and I'm usually up getting ready for work by 7am. I will admit that some days I just sit in my office in a complete daze...

I had the same problem. I used headphones and music. Kept the mind from racing. Now days we use Paxil for the exact problem.I agree with the past post, Some meditation may very well help. You need to find a point of light in your mind and focus on it. Force all of the other thoughts away...you can do this and you will relaxI understand your not waking up from those drugs. Ambien isn't supposed to give you the hangover effect. I just got a scrip so i'm gonna try it as I work nights and find it very hard to stay asleep in the day.

From time to time I go through a little insomnia spell. In remembering that everyone has a different reaction to medication, I can take a 1.5 Xanax and it doesn't phase me. Give my wife a half a pill, she gets the "hangover" affect. On the otherhand, give me an IBU 800, and I'm out like a light. The only problem is that I like to keep the IBU's around for accute back pain. My wife got me script for Ambien, and it works pretty well. I don't feel groggy in the morning after I've taken it the night, or early morning, before. It might be worth asking your physician to let you try it out.

I remember at my gym a few years back, there were a couple of products called Renewtrient and Invigorate. Invigorate was some bad-ass stuff, but tasted awful. Not only would the stuff help you sleep, but was also used to "enhance" your sex life, it was awesome, bought it by the case usually. Finally it was all banned and you can't get it anymore. A friend of mine who was a chemist said there was a solvent in it, found out what it was and started making a version herself, very addicting. They really need to bring that stuff back.
