I think he's getting a motor from Pro Boat (should be close to 1,000HP) with an Imco drive. If he doesn't get 100 MPH, mark my words...he'll be wrinting more checks.

thanks guys for all the compliments. (Thanks HH - like my smoke signals). Dave is going to call the new 28 the FX Extreme. The engine is a 540 done by Tom at Pro Marine in Havasu. It pulled 900hp with 5 pounds of boost. At 7 pounds of bost it was pulling 1000hp. The drive will be an IMCO SC, with a standoff box. Should have the boat by mid July.

WW Hey WW...Joey was in his usual spot (in the channel cooking carne asada for everyone) last weekend with his new ride (you can see it in that video I posted)...
http://www.***boat.com/image_center/data/520/74Joey_s_DCB.jpg
According to Joey, after he worked a couple bugs out, the boat is running good. Pro Marine has the big pulley on the motor for break-in, and has given him strict orders to take it easy for awhile...I forgot to ask what speeds he's seeing.
Although I didn't catch a ride, he says that the standoff box has really brought the boat out of the water (most Extremes ride flat and pretty wet with a Bravo)...he says his bottom is dry up to the back seat when airing it out.
If you see him, ask him for a look and tell him you're from the boards (he lurks around with his dial-up)- he loves talkin' boats...
...and giving out free beer to strangers!

blown advantage - i think you got your numbers mixed up the boat is running a little slower than it should be 86 not "68". same boat with a teague 800 is running 94+. Tom and I are looking into the motor at this point. running on 6???? WOW. i got lots of comments on the way the motor sounds but never that one. Maybe that's what the problem is ... im only running on 6 --- ohhh!! I'll have to ask Tom - but thanks.

BLOWN_ADVANTAGE
09-23-2003, 11:25 AM
WELL WE ALL KNOW THAT IT WONT HANDLE AS GOOD AS A HOWARD THATS FOR SURE I SPOKE WITH BOB TEAGUE IN THE MORNING HE SAID THE BOAT STARTS GETTING LOOSE AROUND 85 AND UP AND THAT THE BOAT ONLY DID 90 ON GPS SO TAKE YOU 92-94 AND KEEP DREAMING THE DAY THAT BOAT CAN DO OVER A 100 I WILL BE OUT BUYING ONE SO FAR STILL LOOKING INTO A HOWARD BUT NOT SET ON IT MAYBE A CAT

TPI
09-23-2003, 01:03 PM
Actually, I was not trying to compare it to a Howard. I just wanted some feedback on the overall performance of the boat and the handling. I think DCB makes an awesome boat, and their rigging quality is awesome. Regarding this 100 mph thing that WE are all hung up on: The fact is, There are only a small handful of single engine sterndrive v bottoms under 30' that can run over 100 mph safely every time out on pump gas and two or more people in the boat. The number is still very small for <30' V's running consistantly over 90 mph with a single engine, SAFELY. The bottom line: It takes a lot of power to push a v-bottom fast, and it takes a ton of engineering to make a boat design do what you want it to do in the constant changing water and weather conditions of the lake. Hey Grass, if you are working any bugs out of your new boat/motor, I am sure you will get it figured out, Sometimes it just takes a few times out. I personally think your boat is very nice. Have fun with it, thats why you bought it.

When you come on the boards and disrespect someone's boat, then you really disrespect them.
I mean, I'm sure you wouldn't want someone to come on here and say things like:

90MPH_DISADVANTAGE:

See? Now that's how to put down someone's boat. Of course, I would never do that to a new member.

I'm going to have to agree with Havasu Hanging's assessment. Rumors, hearsay and name dropping don't mean a thing and can always be interpretted wrong, like the boat won't do over 68mph or sounds like it's only hitting on 6 cylinders, just wasted babble. I don't know of any 28 Extreme's that have hit the century mark but judging by the fact that there are a couple of 90 mph ones with 800 hp Teagues in em, I'd bet that Joeys gets damn close once all the bugs are worked out.

Thats all fine I understand what you have to say I never said Advantage was all that great in fact I hate the boat so where you came up with that I do not know. The bottom of the bottom of the boat has been worked to take out the hook in the boat.Where I came up with the 68mph # is from Tom at Pro Marine and he told me that he was having some problems with the way it was performing.I heard the boat in steamboat cove and it just didnt sound too good maybe the boat was loaded up from idling or it was on the rich side for break in. I was just wondering I was not trying to bad mouth the boat Infact if you look back I did say it was a good looking boat. And it is the Quality of a DCB is 10 times better then a Advantage. To tell you the truth the handling of the advantage sucks that is way I have tried to alter it to run #'s The boat went a 100mph one time and was out of controll.I like the DCB I saw last years model with out the cockpits and I think it ran 85 or so with a teague motor in it which is good just thought they changed the hull and would have tried to run more mph sorry for all this and will improve on my comments to others.

BLOWN_ADVANTAGE:
...sorry for all this and will improve on my comments to others.Well, partner...I'm glad you see the light. Rumors, hearsay (even from Bob Teague or Tom) don't go very far, as someone is gonna call you out. For example...a statement like:
90MPH_DISADVANTAGE:
WELL WE ALL KNOW THAT IT WONT HANDLE AS GOOD AS A HOWARD...SO TAKE YOU 92-94 AND KEEP DREAMING THE DAY THAT BOAT CAN DO OVER A 100...Perhaps a better statement would be:
"Before I bought my Howard, I owned a DCB and..."
The one thing that you learn real quick is that it's a small world after all.

sounds a little devilish! Hey Jim- it sounds like he is trying to exercise the demons from that boat- any advise?
As for Joey's boat, I know he had that 28' Eliminator running 100MPH. Now, the way I look at it, if he can get an Eliminator (without checkers) to run 100MPH...he can get any boat to run 100MPH...

Hey Blown Advantage, getting your 27' Victory to to 100mph is an accomplishment even if it did feel like riding the ragged edge. Because of knowing Grass Pays and having spent a little time around that boat I probably took a little offense to your original comments, but everybody has a right to their own opinion. Now getting a multi tiered response from Havasu Hangign, damn that's like getting called to the principals office! :D

As far as the comment about CBUDGE I talked to him at the Advantage regatta a few years back when he had his 27 Victory with the Pfaff motor and he said the boat was out of control at 80.Which was more then likly do to the fact I know that every Advantage that comes out of the mold handles a little different then the last and I think a new mold was made since his boat was built not sure on that but I think it has. And as far as the comment on having the hull worked and adding k-planes and saying it is good thats the key word never said it was the best or perfect it was just a patch and it helped so more meaning it wasn't a waste of time and money.I know CBUDGE did try or have planes on his boat at one time and thought he said they didn't help it any but like I said all boats are different.

Thats all fine I understand what you have to say I never said Advantage was all that great in fact I hate the boat so where you came up with that I do not know. The bottom of the bottom of the boat has been worked to take out the hook in the boat. And it is the Quality of a DCB is 10 times better then a Advantage. To tell you the truth the handling of the advantage sucks that is way I have tried to alter it to run #'s The boat went a 100mph one time and was out of controll.Your selling this boat right? Well you got me sold with the statement above. I'm ready to buy where do I sign. smile_sp
HH, it's nice to see you back hitting with the multi quotes. I haven't seen this since the RC boat issue. Is there any truth to the rumor that a RC boat gets loose a 3 mph.
Grass Pays, I wasn't bagging on your boat, I think it's very sweet and everybody needs time to dial them in. My point was that Blown Dis*** said it only did 68 mph and I heard Teague was running it over 90. The shorter drive will be of help I bet.

if the info helps our 28' DCB open bow was running between 85 and 87 we have seen it do 87mph it is a very smooth ride. They will get the boat to do what it was made to do and that is look good drive smooth and go fast. It will work over 85mph we've done it. Just my .02 cents. Trying to help and keep hopes up.

HH,Funny stuff,You crack me up :D ,BTW,I know of a checker-less E-brand v-bottom that will tickle just south of triple digits on 700h.p...
Anyway,
In New Mexico there is currently pending litigation, between the local Advantage dealer and a customer, who was coerced into believing that a 50k upgrade (blown 598c.i.,B-Max,full hydraulic steering,k-tabs etc.)would result in a 100m.p.h v-bottom.
Upon delivery of promised 100 m.p.h v-bottom,a couple of things became overtly obvious.
The local Advantage dealer had never done this type of upgrade and was not aware of the hull's limitations/tendencies when coupled with big H.P.
The hull has major shortcomings when speed is introduced into the equasion.
The owner obviously became somewhat irritated upon learning that his 50k plus investment in speed resulted in a boat that would only run 75-80 m.p.h. before becoming (in his words) undriveable.
The results of this litigation should be interesting...
Promised performance vs.Actual performance.
What constitutes undriveable,(safety wise)
The sad part of the whole deal,is that both parties involved were great friends before this whole deal...

Hey grass pay$, I just wanted to give my two cents. I have one of the fastest 28 extremes made with a Bob Teague quad whipple. The engine dynoed at 935hp. I ran the lake of the ozarks shootout and hit 92 radar and 96 on gps. I dont know which one is more accurate. The temp on that run was 93 degrees and way humid. I think my boat will run 98 on a much cooler day. I tested a lot of different props and found a 33 pitched mercury lab finished bravo one gave the best handling. I run a stock bravo 1 30 pitch and see 93 on gps with no chine walking every weekend. I have noticed that prop choice makes a big difference on chine walking in this boat above 94. If you have any questions grass pay$ post a message, I check the boards as much as I can.

THERE IS A LAWSUIT COMMING UP BUT NOT ABOUT THE BOAT. THE CUSTOMER WAS ADVISED NOT TO MAKE THE UPGRADE BECAUSE OF COST AND BEING THE FIRST GUY WITH HIS SETUP.THERE ARE NO K-PLANES WHICH THE CUSTOMER WAS TOLD WOULD BE NECESSARY. THE BOAT HAS NEVER BEEN TUNNED TO THIS DAY SO WITHOUT COMPLETION OF THIS PROJECT WHO KNOWS THE OUTCOME.IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BE AN INNOVATOR OR THE FIRST GUY TO TRY, DON'T DO IT. Dave Starloans - What type of Powerplant/Drive combo are you using for your boat?
Sounds fairly similar in performance to the Ultra 28 Stealth that I have on order.
I am assuming you have some tabs as well, just curious how much you have had to use them and what affect they have had on your ride

No tabs. I really wouldn't know what to do with them except to get on plane quicker? Gets out pretty good with 3 peeps and gear.
Running a hp525 spinnin a 26 bravo. I almost got the hp500. Glad I made the upgrade. Darren @ DCB described it best. When you have that last little bit of throttle left and you push it, nothing happens with the hp500. With the hp525 you get a little bit more juice. The 525 pulls good top to bottom for a stock engine. I would have gotten the 575SC but it was a little much for my pocketbook.
I couldn't bring myself to get a custom built powerpac. Handbuilt power is awesome and will blow everyone off the lake but you can also wind up sadfaced on photo day cause your engine is "still being tuned". :D
I've seen 78 on the handheld and 79 on the DCB installed GPS spedo with light gas. Tach said 5200. Motor had 4 hours on it.
I'm getting the prop labbed. Might as well, it recently got scuffed.

I am considering the HP500/XR combination but have been thinking of uping the ante with the 525 for the reasons that you mentioned not to mention the closed cooling and some of the other Smartcraft goodies. I am sure the HP500 is more than enough power for me for now, but hey I guess the HP thing can be addictive seeing that my previous boat , a Hallet 210S had bigger power in a 540 Bulldog..I still think as much as I tend to dislike Hallett these days, the 210S is unmatched for hard acceleration and point and shoot driving. I can see why it is so popular with the speed ski junkies.

Well...I'll let him explain.
Buuuut, I do now know that if you sieze your Imco Extreme drive, you can blow apart the u-joint, which will break the gimbal housing and bellows.
If you're REALLY LUCKY, the gimbal bearing will stay in one piece on the driveshaft...which slows the water coming in the boat.
Or is it practice?

WetWillie

Is or was he running a Imco 4 x 4 ?
Is he ok? He gunna just make the jump to a # 6?
I thought those drives were pretty tough?
Did he break the 100 mark?
I cant wait for him to tell me as you know that his 12k modem is seized up..

Nope...just the Extreme. I think he has a new beefy gimbal already...just in time for the boat show.

Yeah...we all thought they were tough. Let's count the drives:
Joey's Eliminator (Bravos and Imco)- 3
Carlos' Mach (Teague Platinum)- 1
Joeys DCB (Imco)- 1
I'm not sure...but I'm gonna credit the two broken Fortons on Carlos' Mach to Joey "The Drive Destructor" as well (he was in the area).
I know he was hovering around 100 MPH, but he had too much slip. I think he's got some new 5 blade Hydromotive metal on the way to get it down.

The only way his 12K modem would seize up is if he attached it to the back of any boat he is driving.

I am looking for a little DCB 28 Extreme info. Perhaps Joey will even give me a little insight.
I just finished putting a 700HP Paul Pfaff engine in the boat and had her out on Friday and Saturday. I am barely getting to 80 MPH with the 28 Lab, however, the water was pretty rough and it started to get real squirrley (sp) at the 78 mph mark - wtf?? Is that just the way it is or am I doing something wrong?

4 Drives in what time frame? Kind of makes me wonder if it is the drive, setup, or driver....lots of other folks on here going with more hours....Also, I would not count the Fortin drive out yet just cause the Drive Destructor nuked a beta model...

Joey has got a couple things going against him:
1. He has a house in Havasu...he's there ALOT...which means many, many hours.
2. He has run a couple of heavy, single engine V's with 1,000+ HP for more than a few years.
3. Alco Marine gave him a couple Bravos that were "questionable" (not sure there's supposed to be water in the oil?)

No one's counting the Fortin drive out...but it hit the canvas from two different drivers in two separate weekends. I hope they fix the weak link (because it came out the side of the case).
I think the current Imco drive that broke was actually an old one with more than a few hours on it...and I hear Imco is taking care of him...
...so don't believe everything you read here.

The "Drive Destructor" has struck again.

Sorry to hear about all of the drive trouble. Thats no fun at all. I think the 28 xtreme is a gorgeous boat, so I have been watching this post waiting for some feedback on the boat and its top speed/handling characteristics. Has anyone from the boards had the opportunity to open one up for any length of time with 900 or 1000 hp?

I think Joey was in the 90's for awhile when it let go.

I do not know why Joey does not just put a number 6 speedmaster on that thing?
He would be money ahead by now!
Is it the horsepower or torque tearing those drives up?
Or is it his driving style?
I am putting new power in his old boat, 690hp with a whipple, & 900 Ft LBs of torque.
I Sure hope the cures of the drive drestructor does not strike me.

He already asked Dave and Dave told him a #6 would not work on his boat. The engine would have to sit further forward with a #6 drive and the belly tank is in the way.

Dude, you are lucky you did not catch fire....wow that sucks....so they don't tighten down the fittings on those Teague Motors j/k....actually, before I decided on the blendaz, I was going with the Teague setup...your's looks great.
