What kind of furnace? Pulse? I was an HVAC guy in a former life. :)
It used with some high-efficiency stuff to keep the noise down in forced air installations.

The A-coil will dampen some of the furnace noise so the insulation is not as necessary with A/C. It's probably not a bad idea since most duct systems are under-built and removing the glass will help a tiny bit. If your plenum is big enough, the glass will help make it a little quieter, though. Is your A-coil freezing up?
The fiberglass probably doesn't go that far up the plenum, though. :)

Yes, fiberglass is rated as a group 2b carcinogen. You're not supposed to touch it, either. It is recommended that you wear gloves and wear a mask to block the fibers from entering your lungs, when working with it.
On the other hand, there's nothing like an 8 month chemotherapy vacation... :D
