You have a VORTEC in an 88 Blazer? Did the swap net you any gains of significance? I would like to see the pics of your rig, I have one too. I have been kicking around the idea of a small lift and some 33's just for appearance sake.
Thanks,
Steve

1988 was the first year of the Vortec, I recently found that out from a machinest buddy of mine. It has the center bolt valve covers and all. The same motor that was used until just a few years ago. This truck hauls the mail, I put a 3" flowmaster exhaust on it and can pull my boat up the grapevine in third gear at around 70mph. The amazing thing is my brother (froggy) calls it the "Magic Truck" because I get about 50% better gas mileage than he does with his 2001 durango 5.9L. It gets between 12-15 towing. Wierd huh? Must be something to do with the manual tranny. I'll try and get those pics on tonight, but as I am a compu-tard, I may need to enlist my bro's help. Anyone that wants to see it shoot me an E-mail and I'll forward them.....skeepwerkzaz@hotmail.com. Thanks

Skeepwerkzaz-I hate to disagree, but the Vortec was named the because of the design of the heads and the way that they swirled the airflow into the chamber. This design didn't go into production until the 1996 production year. You might be mistaken between the fuel injected heads of the early 90's when they switched to the center bolt for the valve covers.

Kev....I just talked to my buddy that owns the machine shop. He does not toatally disagree with you but this is what he said.......The term "Vortec" was popularized with the 1996 model year, but the design of the heads dates back to the late 80's. The cylinder heads on my (all) 88 are interchangeable with ONLY 88 and newer models. I could bolt a brand new '03 intake to my heads, but not a pre '88 one. The cylinder head design is radically different than the "old" ones. The engine was used right up until the 1996 model year when the fuel injection was re-designed and changed from the TBI to MPI. All engine upgrades, i.e. superchargers, intakes, pulleys etc. are interchangeable between the years '88-'96. He told me that in the engine building field, they have been calling the engines "Vortec's" for the last 14+ years. I am not saying that he is right, but he is doing a pretty good job of convincing me!!!!!! If you have different info I would like to be edumatated. Thanks ahead of time.

The 96 was the first year for the gm vortec. 88 was no different than 87 which was the first year of the throttle body injection in the truck. 87 was when they went to the center bolt valve covers. The hp increased 50 in 96. The 96-98's run a lot stronger than the 87-95's and have a lot more trouble. I owned a 87 k-5 blazer bought it new and put over 200,000 miles on it, with only minor problems. Still prefer that body style over the newer ones.
