A view of the approach to Vegas from the rail side of things....I used to work this run, long ago, but chose LA as my home...this was posted on another site by a guy who works there, a long time friend....notice the big 30 on the speedo.....they must know he wants to get off the train and into the casinos.....we all did back then....is there still bar out there called Sharky's?? The stories I could tell from there.....

Wow! Cool shots. Had almost the same view as that first pic out my office window when I lived out there. Never seen it from the tracks though. Whole new perspective :)

Nice pix.
Amtrack says the 'Vegas passenger train resumes service early '07.
Dedicated track and the route is through the Cajon pass,, 4 hr 45 min trip from Union Station.
2 bars, a restaurant, a snack bar, arcades, ect ect.
We used to take it all the time. We have great stories and adventure on every train trip.
The back Valleys are awsum.
TPC's HB / RRL / HD group trip when reservations are available.
Sharkies I think, is still there.
My favorite was Little Ceasars casino. A full but tiny glass store front casino owned by a plick former boxer, I think his name was Jack Davis.
Pour-your-own bar, 25 cent craps, 50 cent blackjack,, fist fights between customers - employees and the ultra A hole owner all the time,, a real plick.

Rio, those guys wrong, kinda. Remotes ARE being used in Socal, dangerous as they are. The carriers insist on them, and they are not being run by engineers, so be careful around them. Remotes are being used mainly in yard jobs, and some road switchers, so the closest that you would find one would be maybe Barstow. I don't thingk Needles has yard jobs, if it does, there is the possibility of one or two remotes around there.....but for now, all main line trains have two man crews aboard.....
Flying Tiger, you could be right about the return of the Desert Wind, it leaves LAUPT, runs out the Santa Fe to Daggett, just past Barstow, then hangs a hard left and heads towards Vegas....I know that Amtrak has been planning for it, but is waiting for a new third main to be installed between San Bernadino an Victorville. I'm not sure how much of that is done...I'll post a message on Trainorders for it and get back to you with an answer...
Heres a couple more of his shots....great stuff...
