I don't know if you are familiar with "noodling", but it is the term for the way Oklahoma guys catch their fish. These guys wade out into the river and feel for holes in the river floor. When they find a catfish hole, they stick their hands in there and pull out these monster catfish.
I don't think I would be sticking my hand in any large, dark holes. eek!
Not sure if this is photoshop or not. They don't seem to be straining to hold these things.

You can always tell a noodler by the missing fingers. I find it humorous those people that live for extreme sports and don't want to try this. It would make a good fear factor, tho.

So SeaDog, this is a true activity? I just can't see this happening without some sort of pain or chance of losing fingers.

Legend has it that the cats at the bottom of Grand Lake have done the great white shark bit. Yes there are guys that do this. I was raised around "the catfish capital of the world' and this was big for those putting fish on the table or as sport. They guard their holes like they would a gold mine.

For those who doubt, this is the excert from the state regs.
NOODLING: Noodling is the taking of nongame fish only by use of hands only. Possession of hooks, gaffs, spears, poles or ropes with hooks attached while in the act of noodling shall be proof of violation of the “hands only” noodling law. Noodling shall be lawful year-round in all waters unless restricted under “SPECIAL AREA RESTRICTIONS.”

My Dad has friend that grew up in the south and told him all about noodling which he had done since he was a kid. He said that when you stick your hand down where the big fish are hiding under the river banks the fish will swallow your arm all the way up to the armpit and then the guy fishing has to grab hard on a handful of guts which temporarily paralizes the fish. Then you can drag him out and throw him up on the shore. I guess if you don't grab fast enough the fish can rake his teeth down your arm and you get cut up.

I did not know catfish could get that big. I've only ever seen lil guys. Guess you could say noodling takes guts. wink Wow. Not enough money or chocolate in the world to put me anywhere near any noodling.

It would make a good "Fear Factor" stunt. After they catch em then they could eat the raw innards!!

Yeah, I have a buddy that goes noodling around the Grand lake area. His arm is always scratched up from the catfish. It gets infected about have the time. I'll stick to trot and limb lines. They say that the catfish around the dam at grand get that big. Divers that inspect the dam see them all the time. eek!

The smart noodlers make it a team effort. There are a lot of ways to have an accident doing this, not to mention the fact that you are in the cat's house.

The pic I said was a fake was actually caught in the river PO in South Italy. It was circulated as the Texas fish but it was a hoax. Here is substantiation.

my cousin in Illinois sent me this awhiile back and was angry (he is a cop) that people would endanger their lives that way. I guess it is dangerous....
If they are stuck in the hole and can't get out, how do they eat?
I mean they aren't like the people that have to be buried in piano boxes because they overeat so much, someone comes to feed them.....(sorry very mean thing to say, my back hurts)

Noodling is probably the most fair and equal method of hunting.
Bare handed.
No guns, traps, lures etc.

Oklahoma's form of gator wrestling. Since we aint got no gator, cats will have to do.:)
Surprised the Wildboyz haven't tried it yet!
Me I think I will just drink my beer and look at the bikinis. I have no desire to stick my hand into anything I cant see. Especially if it could possibly have teeth!

Noodling was once a way of fishing for many in a lot of states. It is not for the faint hearted, but can be addictive. Most do not see the really big cats, it is usually 20 lbs and under. While there are some scars and bite marks, rarely do you hear of anyone getting seriously hurt.
Considering what some idiots do on Fear Factor, it is a real tame sport.

Those pictures are of the Wells Catfish. It's the biggest freshwater fish in Europe. They can be found throughout Great Brittian and Europe.
