I have a close friend that works at a facility in Mojave where the Space Shuttle Columbia received it's last major overhaul. These are a few pictures of the great space ship! She will be greatly missed.

I took a tour at Boeing last year out here at Plant 42 (Palmdale) when the Columbia was in there for repairs...it was amazing to walk under her and see the actual silica tiles on the skin..
The space shuttle is a big deal out here in the AV...hundreds of jobs depend on it!!

That's absolutely incredible how they transport the shuttles atop the Boeing 747 to get them back to Florida from California. The Columbia is referred to as the "first" space shuttle, but does anyone remember the "Enterprise"? Back in the 70's the Enterprise was build to test the shuttle's ablility to glide among other things. It was the same size as the Columbia, but never designed to enter space. Anyway, they would fly the 747 really high, then dive at a steep angle and release the Enterprise in flight! It was cool to watch those tests. :D

Good shots,
When you put the Shuttle next to a 747 it shows the Shuttle is a lot bigger then what I thought it was.

I think that we all owe a debt of gratitude to any of the fortunate "explorers" that have gone into space, they make our life better every day. Although, I would have gone up the second after either the Challenger or the Columbia disasters, so I really don't feel that sorry for them, they like any aviators, know the inherant risks of breaking the surly bonds of earth. I do feel for their families however, as the families of pilots, while understanding of the love that the pilots have for their job, never quite feel the same way.
Like someone said earlier, what a great friggen' country. Go us!
