I'm looking at both the chevy 2500HD crew 4x4 w/ the 8.0 and the ford F250 crew 4x4 V10. I tow a old 20'Hallett v-drive, nothing too heavy. Appreciate any input. Thanks.

I have the '03 1500 HD 4x4 with the 6.0 and 4:10 gears and it pulls my 22' Schiada like it's nothing. I don't have a need for anything more than that. As far as Chevy vs. Ford, my $.02 is that the Chevy has a far better engine, but the Ford has a far better ride. The rear end of my HD is like a f**king stage coach on the God Damned cement freeways we have around here.
Good luck with your decision.

As long as you don't mind getting terrible mileage then get the 8.1, you won't regret it. I will love mine until the day it drinks me into the poor house! If mileage is of some concern, you might be better off with the 6.0, it's plenty strong for towing a 20' boat and does a few mpg better from what I've heard. I get 11 city, 12 highway, 9-10 towing with a 4x4 crew cab 8.1/Allison. Doesn't get very far on a 26 gal tank! Eventually I will add headers and a Superchips programmer in hopes of picking up some mileage (and some extra torque of course).
Yeah, the rear end of the GM HD trucks is very stiff, great when loaded but harsh over speed bumps and concrete freeway joints. I've had both and overall I like the handling of the GM IFS over the Superduty Fords.

Thank's for the replies.
I'm leaning towards the chevy w/ the 8.1. A buddy of mine has the 6.0 and gets about the same mileage as the 8.1 is getting. I guess the new front end will have to grow on me, like a wart.

My 6.0 gets 12 mpg on freeway. Towing Mach 26 about 8.5. You might as well get the 8.1.

Any reason you don't want a deisel? The gas jobs will kill you on gas cost. If you drive much the deisel will pay for it's self and if you don't, you will get the purchase price back when you sell it. Nothing pulls like a deisel;;;either ford or chev.

Uh, maybe because they're noisy and smell bad?

:D Thanks for clearing it up for me. Maybe he pulls a 2 stroke outboard and then it wouldn't matter.

I'm a Chevy guy all of the way, but I will admit you get a lot for your money with Ford. If I were to replace my 99 Tahoe today though, I'd get an 8.1 2500 Burb. Red of course!
And for the record, my 1500, 3:73geared, 31"tired, 5.7 Tahoe 4x4 tows my Lavey OK, but not as great as I'd like. It towed my 18' Hawaiian like it wasn't back there at all. I definately know this 23' beast is on the bumper! Taking 91, 60, 10 to Parker it pulled down to 55mph on a couple of the passes (just before the 10 and out of Cabazon). Once it's rolling it's not bad and if I don't try to tow 80 the whole way, it's not bad at all. I can tow 70, w/o any trouble over most of the passes. I'm just a power junky I guess.

I really like the diesels, but for what i'll be doing,i don't know that I need one. Plus, they are noisey and smell bad. No 2 stroke blender motor, just a plain ol twin turbo 496 v-drive cruiser.
I'm a Chevy guy also. I currently have a 93 1500 x-cab 4x4 w/ 210,000 miles that still runs strong. I want to stay with a Chevy, but have heard some bad things about the new motors(carbon problems, piston slap). Don't know if there is any truth to it.

Do you read the forums at www.pickuptrucks.com (http://www.pickuptrucks.com)? There is quite a bit of information about piston slap in the small blocks (mostly) and oil burning in the big blocks. Sounds like some people have had motors replaced or gotten extended warranties for free. It sure seems like GM screwed up with the latest generation of truck motors and is keeping things quiet. I've been lucky, my 8.1 burned several quarts in the first 2000 miles and then stopped, no problems since. Mine is also fairly quiet (no major knocking noises).

:D They only smell bad when your behind them, which is probably the case if you towing with a small block
Ford F250 Power Stroke Diesel Crew Cab
4X4, 3" lift, 35" All Terrains, Diablo Power Chip
14-16.5 MPG towing or not

MKEELINE- I work for Truckin' Magazine and have found the HD to be a great truck. I don't think you need the 8.1 though unless you plan on getting a bigger boat later on. The 6.0 is plenty for your set up. My friend has the 6.0 and pulls a 26 footer no problem. He also pulls a 21 foot travel trailer alot to the desert. If you do not drive the truck everyday go for the 8.1. Once you start getting into bigger boats you need all that extra power. The other thing is how far do you tow the boat and how often. If you are like me you are towing all summer. Check out the Feb. '03 issue of Truckin' for a little info on the HD.

Well I'm going to have to go against the grain here and recommend the Ford, Both my boats have Chevy power plants, but I wouldn't tow them with anything but a Ford. Their is no meaner looking truck than a lifted super-duty, plus V-10 sounds pretty damn good with exhaust. Also my buddy averages 13 miles per gallon on the freeway, not too bad. Just my 2c cents

I HAVE HAD BOTH THE FORD AND THE GMC HD. THE 2000 GMC HD WITH THE 496 AND THE ALLISON PULLED VERY WELL BELOW 65 OR ABOVE 75. IT HUNTED THE RIGHT GEAR IN BETWEEN. IT WAS A LOADED 4X4 WITH 285/75/16 INCH RUBBER AND 4:10 GEARS. IT AVERAGED 9MPG ALL THE TIME AND ROAD LIKE SHIT. I LOVE CHEVYS BUT I PULLED WITH MY BUDDY'S FORD AND BOUGHT IT ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER. THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO THE F250 WITH THE DIESEL. IT WILL OUT PULL AND OUT RUN THE GMC HANDS DOWN. IT ALSO RIDES BETTER AND ITS ALSO 4X4 WITH 33" TIRES BUT NEVER HUNTS A GEAR. IT GETS 14MPH ALL THE TIME BUT IT STILL SQEEKS AND RATTLES LIKE A DAMN FORD. I PUT UP WITH IT FOR THE POWER.
THATS MY TEN CENTS WORTH.
