I have tried 3 different types of blockers and none of them work. I need something to stop them from comming when I am not online. If I leave my computer running for 10 hours(not surfing), it will take me 20 minutes to close all of the popups. i never had this problem when I had windows 98! Alll of this started when I got a new computer with windows xp. Does anyone know of a software that will eliminate this? They all say "messenger service" on them. 90% of them are popup blocker adds or penile enlargement adds! if anyone can help please let a brotha know.

you need to go into component services and disable messenger.
Most home users don't need instant messenger.

Those come through a different port than the regular pop ups. It is used for Net Send message on a network. Anyway for home systems you dont need it. Here is a link.

Maybe you should try the penile enlargements and they will go away.
Try this. This is all the updates bundled into one. With this you will not have to have to install all of them one at a time. With this you will be pretty up to date. See if it fixes the problems. If it doesn't I suggest disableing the message service in the services. To do that you will right click on my computer-manage- click on services. I like to disable error reporting also so that you don't get those annoying send to microsoft errors every time you end a task on something. There are some cool things you can turn on or off in services just be careful. Like I said try this link first.

I use the new google toolbar, and it does an amazing job blocking popups, plus, it keeps google on your IE page, really handy.
Just do a google search for google toolbar. It is free, and works awesome.

Froggy's right on with this one. I've been using Google's new toolbar and it stops all the popups.

Go to download.com and do a search for the latest version of "popup stopper". I have been using it for about the last 6-8 months. It works great. Just remember sometimes when you want to open a new window it will think it is a popup. Just hold down the control key and it will let the popup/new window open.

I like to use the Mozilla browser. It has a built in pop up ad stopper and it works great. Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org)
I think Netscape may have the same feature on the latest build. It might be a better choice than Mozilla, since websites will recognize it better.

It actually isn't connected to a browser. It's a windows 2000
and xp thing.I tried alot of popup stoppers and always the same result. I did a search on IE and found where the problem was . vdrive

Not to be a spammer here, but when I upgraded to AOL9.0 it not only stopped EVERY pop up,but it tells you how many it blocked and allows you to read them(as if you would). TIMINATOR :D

Try using the free-ware called Spybot. It rids your computer of hidden crap that normally caused frequent pop-ups. Just my 0.02

Spybot is great but won't work here as this is not an abnormality
(cool word did I spell it right) of the system. Messenger is doing exactly what it is meant to do. V-drive

It sounds to me like you have a virus. Multiple pop ups to that extent are usually viruses. This happened to me a few months back from a link I opened up on these boards. Almost completely crashed my computer.
My son is a computer tech, He had me download Spybot Search & Dystroy (S & D). It is a free program and it works. I run it about once a week now to keep my computer clean. For some reason the other virus scans don't detect these pop ups as viruses.
You need to act quickly because it will use up all your memory and crash your hard drive. My daughter lost everything on her computer when it happened to her.
Good luck.

This is true. Apparently no one read my link.;) Net Send dates way back to NT OS that 2000/XP is based on. It is useful for net admins to send messages to users with, unless you are running an older OS.

Just thought I would throw in my two cents here. People hit most of the items already, but here is the best cheapest way to secure your computer that I have found.
1. Go into the services (control panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services) Find Messenger and right click on it. Stop the service and then right click again chose properties and set to disabled.
2. Go to sygate.com and get their free personal firewall. (http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm)
Sygate wont crash nearly as much as ZoneAlarm, and if you don't know what you are doing it will do a good job protecting your computer. If you do know what you are doing you can really lock down your Internet by only allowing apps to access certain IP ranges and such. (advanced note: For instance if I have a certain program that needs to access IP 211.22.34.23 on port 21 with a TCP connection, I will give it rights to only that IP on port 21 and only with the one type of connection it needs. You would be amazed at how many programs try to call home and send stats on you without your knowledge.)
3. Go to http://toolbar.google.com/ and get the Google tool bar. It is the deal and it has a great pop-up blocker.
4. Go to http://security.kolla.de/ and get the latest spybot. Run it and clean the spy-ware off of your computer.
5. Get a good virus checker and what ever you do don't get Norton Anti virus 2004. It was worse than having a virus. McAfee's is doing a great job right now and isn't too much of a resource hog.
--- Additional Cool things ---
iespell - an in browser spell checker plugin. http://www.iespell.com
Ok I am done. I know most of that was already mentioned, but I thought it might help to put it all in one place.

I don't really like Nortons either, have had some problems with them in the past.
here is a great anti- virus here ESET (http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm)
Great product and priced well. ;)

When you download Syware, do you then have to kick it in the ass to get it to work, or once it's downloaded it knows what to do?
I've now downloaded it to disk, anything else I have to do or does it now run automagically?
I went to travelosity and picked up so many pop ups I can't shake them. It was like the house got hit by a bus. The "Gain" popups are the worst.
Thanks, -Ross

I run Zone Alarm pro and it has never crashed on me.
I also use the google tool bar. Mainly for quick, easy searches but the pop up blocker works fairly well and has an easy interface.
For anti virus, I use Norton Systemworks 2003 Pro. It works flawlessly and I have it on all of our machines and it is set up to download and install the dats automatically. I never have to remember to update the 5 different machines.

Ok have tried just about everything! The pop ups I'm getting are Microsoft Internet Explorer pop ups. Does anyone know of a good free program on download.com that works!
