A close friend of mine wants to buy a big truck for towing his new boat. It's
a 38' Fountain Express Cruiser that weighs over 20,000 lbs including the trailer. He's asking me for help figuring out which one to buy. Since I know
less than anyone on this subject, I'm turning to you guys for help.
My friend is NOT poor but he's not a "hey mine's the biggest and the best"
type of guy either. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
He'll have the boat here in Havasu and then up to his other home in Anacordas Washington and Roche Harbor. Thanks.

Something that big and towing that far??? I'd be looking at something along the lines of an FL110 at the bare minimum and if it was me, I'd go bigger than that. From what I recall, lots of not so fun to tow big loads on kind of roads between here and there. You can never have too much truck, at least in my opinion. ;)

Baja Mike: great overhead photo! as a matter of fact, my friend owns a home on the island in that photo about where that single boat is parked and another on the land side so that he has parking for his cars and boats on both sides! etc!!
Shaken Not Stirred: Yes, I remember! great seeing you guys out there. saw
you in the "family boat" too going about 8 gaziillion mph on the ole gPS!
Don't want to hijack the thread though, he's asking for all the help he can get on this truck thing. thanks for those helping. he'd rather spend a little
more to get good power and ride than cheat and save a few bucks. As I
indicated earlier he is NOT poor.

I would recommend a medium duty freightliner like the one pictured above. An fl70 or the new business class is more than enough truck to pull 20k. I have 2 fl70 in my fleet that wouldnt bat an eyelash at 20k.

You can see the runway in the right center of the picture, it's actually the old highway into town....
You overshoot the runway and your in the harbor....
Ok, I'll stop this hijack.....

I would look in to a low mile used class 8 truck with auto shift. Can be had from 35-70k and will tow that like its nothing. IT WILL ALSO STOP IT LIKE NOTHING SHOULD THE NEED ARISE, with jake and air brakes. A mdt toter class 5-6 will be under powered and will REALLY suffer on the grades.

That was the point I was making. If it was a short flat pull, I'd say one of the FL70 or equivilants would handle it, however, with the runs he's talking about, yeah, not so much. ;)
