There is not much more that pisses me off more than punks that litter. What in the world are they thinking about? I see it all the time, cigarette butts, fast food bags tossed out the window, WTF? I speak up sometimes and others not, afraid of getting shot. I have thought both my daughters not to litter, EVER! So far it seems to be working. I just donÂ’t understand the thinking that goes into tossing crap on the ground.
Does this upset anyone else? I think we need the Indian commercial back.

I friend if mine from High School has a scar on her face from a cigar burn she got riding in her parent's car the freeway. When she was a kid someone tossed their cigar out the window of a car and it came through the window of her parent's car, hitting her in the cheek, leaving a perminate scar. She is otherwise a very cute French/Canadian girl too.
To this day I get pissed when people toss their cigarettes and other trash out the car window.

I hate people that litter! That is one of my biggest pet peeves. The people that toss their cigarette butts out the windows bother me the most. What do they think the world is their ash tray?
I was at a red light one day and the guy in front of me tossed out a burning cigarette butt. I finally snapped and lost it. I got out of my truck picked up the cigarette butt tossed it back into his car and said something along the lines of “What do you think this is your personal ash tray a$$hole!” he just starred at me as the burning cigarette was smoldering on his floor.
So yes to answer your question it does bother me as well!

I enjoy pulling up to a beach down the lake to find empty beer cans, cigarette butts, plastic baggies, etc. along shore.
Is it really that much more difficult to put the trash in a bag in your boat two feet away?

I just use my floor cooler for trash. Works great.
The Lavey has two draining coolers under the back seat and a draining floor cooler, plus I carry my seperate cooler where the passenger jump seat should have gone. So the floor cooler is not needed. So I use it for empty cans, and trash.

when does littering cross over to dumping??? in east texas some people throw out refrigerators, old tires, mattresses. Is that littering or dumping and what are the defining differences between the two???

True story....I'm attended UCR, and we are on Canyon Crest. Cop car in front of me in the number 1 lane, and a Guy in front of me in a 70's something Monte Carlo puffing away on a stogie. The smell of the cheap thing is killing me, so I roll up the window. Well after about 30 seconds the dumb bastard flips the thing out the drivers window....and it lands on the hood of this cop car!
The cop gets out, walks over to the car and proceeds to lambast this guy about littering! The greatest part was watching him whip out the ticket book, and ask this guy for his license and registration......I was laughing so damn hard, that he heard me and flipped me off. So as I drive by I see the bird flying and I can't resist...I stop, role down the passenger window and yelled, "so how did the $1000.00 dick taste?" I didn't wait for a reply, but it was great to see!

One of our law enforcement friends can straighten me out if I'm wrong..... I believe I learned in traffic school a few years ago, that throwing cigarettes out the window is a much stiffer fine that just littering, because you're tossing out something that is technically on fire.

I hate it when people throw cigarette butts out the window along with anything else.
Last I heard the fine here in Ca. for a Cig. butt out the window was a $250 to $300 fine plus a manadatory 8 hours of community service.

Heres the section for littering:
42001.7. (a) Every person convicted of a violation of Section 23111 or 23112, or subdivision (a) of Section 23113, shall be punished by a mandatory fine of not less than one hundred dollars ($100) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) upon a first conviction, by a mandatory fine of not less than five hundred dollars ($500) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) upon a second conviction, and by a mandatory fine of not less than seven hundred fifty dollars ($750) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) upon a third or subsequent conviction.
In no case may the court order imprisonment in the county jail for a violation punishable under this subdivision, unless imprisonment is ordered pursuant to Section 166 of the Penal Code.
(b) The court shall, in addition to the fines imposed pursuant to subdivision (a), order the offender to pick up litter or clean up graffiti at a time and place within the jurisdiction of the court as follows:
(1) For a first conviction punished pursuant to subdivision (a), the court shall require the offender to pick up litter or clean up graffiti for not less than eight hours.
(2) For a second conviction punished pursuant to subdivision (a), the court shall require the offender to pick up litter or clean up graffiti for not less that 16 hours.
(3) For a third or subsequent conviction punished pursuant to subdivision (a), the court shall require the offender to pick up litter or clean up graffiti for not less than 24 hours.
(c) It is the intent of the Legislature that persons convicted of highway littering be required to bear the penalty for their actions. Therefore, the court may not suspend the mandatory fines required by subdivision (a) except in unusual cases where the interest of justice would best be served by suspension of the fine. If the court suspends imposition of any fine required by subdivision (a), it shall, as a condition of that suspension, require the offender to pick up litter or clean up graffiti at a time and place within the jurisdiction of the court for not less than eight hours for every one hundred dollars ($100) of fine suspended. The court may not suspend the order to pick up litter or clean up graffiti required by this subdivision or subdivision (b) except in unusual cases where the interest of justice would best be served by suspension of that order.

The "guy in the commercial" was Iron Eyes Cody, a full blood Cherokee. He had a long career in movies and TV.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Iron Eyes Cody, the "Crying Indian" whose tearful face in 1970s television commercials became a powerful symbol of the anti-littering campaign, died Monday. He was in his 80s or early 90s.
Cody died of natural causes at 1:30 p.m. PST in his home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles, police spokesman Ed Funes said.
Cody, whose acting credits date back to silent movies and include dozens of films and television shows, was best known for the ads from the group Keep America Beautiful that showed him shedding a single tear as he watched people litter.
He was born in Oklahoma, but the exact date of birth wasn't known. Reference books give various dates, from 1904 to 1915. Based on his credits, his most likely date of birth was 1907.
Cody followed his Cherokee Indian father, Thomas Long Plume, as a performer in circuses and Wild West shows and made his first film appearance as an extra in the 1919 silent "Back to God's Country."
Cody went on to appear in more than 80 films in Indian roles; often his character was listed as simply "Indian," "Indian Chief" or "Indian Joe." In one film, "Perils of Nyoka" in 1942, he had an uncredited role as "Arab."
His other credits included "Sitting Bull" in 1954, "The Great Sioux Massacre" in 1965, "Nevada Smith" in 1966, "A Man Called Horse" in 1970 and "Ernest Goes to Camp" in 1987.
Cody also served as a technical adviser on Native American matters in films.
In television, he had guest appearances on "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide."

sure as hell did;) I didn't even know that cars still had ashtrays...But in all seriousness we have 'criminals' to pick up the freeways and roadways in Texas. I pay for them to eat, sleep and drink so damn right they can pick up my garbage. I have started chunking beer cans out the window since the open container law. Better to get a littering ticket than a DUI. phuct up huh! what are your thoughts on open container laws RD??????

I don't throw anything else out the window though except cigarettes.. As a matter of fact I'd say with the exception of cigarettes I'm probably one of the best that I know in regards to littering. I even go so far as to pick up trash when I see it laying around... so who knows? maybe on some Karmic level I'm balancing something out? :D
Open container laws.. LOL Well I'd be willing to wager ya already know how I feel on the subject or ya wouldn't have asked me. I'm of the belief that in the city it oughta be illegal, but in the country or non densely populated areas (I.E. Parker) I think the cops really oughta find something better to do then look for OUI's / DUI's.
I used to know a guy though from South Carolina that had an interesting (kinda weird but interesting) take on littering.. He used to drive around in his truck, and everytime he was done with a soda can he'd throw it out the window.. He wouldn't throw anything else out except cans... His logic was that the homeless people pick them up and recycle them for money and explained to me that alot of people do this in South Carolina (can anyone confirm that?)..
RD I can't confirm south carolina but I can say they do in Texas. Just remember RD beer cans don't start fires:eek: Beer cans and cigarettes are all I throw out the window, well with the exception of some Cophenhagen every now and then. Like I said we have 'criminals' to pick up our trash and I guess the homeless do also. It's just my way to complete the circle of life. So how many of you anti-litter extremists drive jet-skis or SUV's or huge diesel trucks?:)

I can understand your predicament but it doesnÂ’t change the fact that you are littering. You need a little billet container for your butts. If it has a lid on it that should alleviate the smell problem. So get your ass to the lathe and start making chips!

Christ this littering thing has always drove me nuts. I'm glad to hear others are in this boat too. At Needles and Topock, where the locals have access to the beaches (You know the locals I'm refering too - hint - they own cheap fishing poles not boats or even lake lice transporters.) they often intentionally leave trash all over the place - everything from diapers to beer cans. They are PIGS (Puercos). They are generally people who are here illegally, hate the fact they had to come up here to make a living of sorts, hate us for having committed the sin of being American citizens and possessing recreation toys (It doesn't matter to them that we worked our fat asses off to afford these things.), and they detest this country! They show their disrespect with rampant littering. It seems so bizzare that we who are not permanent River residents take more care on keeping the place clean than the people that live there. I'm sorry - I sound pretty predujudice ranting here - but let me just add that my wife is of Mexican descent - one generation removed from Mexico - and I once was witness to her telling a probably illegal young lady with a little baby that it was not acceptable to change your baby's diaper in the street and then just leave the shit-diaper laying at the curb in front of someone's house. The girl and my wife ended up screaming in Spanish at one another. I ended up picking up the damn diaper and putting into my trash. The Illegal girl left her car parked in front of my place and went across the street to where she stayed with several families. I'm not saying Americans don't litter but usually it is out of laziness not class envy. Truth is i'm sick of picking up other people's trash! I want draconian littler rules - huge fines for littering, even spitting in public or inappropiate places. If we can't pen-up these human pigs - then let's fine 'em till they cease and desist or pack up there ungrateful kulos and go back home. I'm sorry - this went on way too long.

I have to chime in on this subject. The thing that pisses me off more than sitting in traffic is sitting in traffic smellin someones stinky ass cig. Almost 10 times out of ten the loser throws their shit out the window. I have been thinking of stopping at an offramp and collecting a container of butts to throw in the window of the next lazy ass. Laws dont work maybe this will.
