I did not serve, I wish that I had. I wanted to fly, (probably never woulda happened) or support aviaition operations, but waited too long to decide it was something I really wanted to do. I was older than their "target" recruit for the reserves.
My son did serve, though.

Hey, I didn't know that about you Info. That's cool. I work right next to the base and watch the jets fly all day. Of course, now it's MCAS... They still host the best air shows ever.

My grandpa fought in WWII and when he came back, my mom said he was NEVER the same. You have no idea what these brave men had to endure. Take the most profound movie like "Saving Private Ryan" and magnify it by 100.

My Dad-E-O who turned 83 in September was a Lt. Cdr. in the Navy Reserve in WWII and skippered a minesweeper in the Pacific. From Alaska to the Solomons, then the Phillipines.
I cannot imagine having the responsibility that he had at the tender age of 21 to 25.

Thanks to all the vets... I never consider myself in the same class as those who fought in WWII or otherwise. Different time, lots of bravery, few guarantees.

I just called my friend Marty Karp and told him how much I admire him and appreciate his service.
Marty landed on Omaha Beach, spent the rest of the war leading the charge to Gremany. He was a Captain in a Combat Engineer Battalion, won the Bronze Star for his effectiveness in pushing the war effort.
He's 86 now, and you know what he told me tonight? "Ron, I feel very lucky that I was a part of a great effort by this wonderful country. We responded to a danger that could have crushed us, and we carried the day. I am honored that I was able to serve our nation."
That, my friends, is greatness. God bless you, Marty, and all those that served with you.

The wife, kids and I are gratetful to all of you whether or not you ever went to war, the fact that you were there if the need ever arose is enough........

BTW if you ever want to appreciate what some of the men from the WWII generation went through, get Band of Brothers, all 10 episodes. It is the most historically accurate cinematic work on WWII available IMO. They went out of their way to keep it as accurate as possible, with a small dramatic license. Based upon a book by renowned historian the Late Dr. Stephen Ambrose. Watching it right now on HBO...
Really makes you appreciate the sacrifices of all of the men and women of our armed forces...
