This morning I went to two different Home Depots, Costco, An Ace Hardware store, and an Albertsons grocery store looking for some peanut oil. Everybody was out of the stuff. Next year I plan to buy it by the case. Which raises a question, what about useing different oil like Canola, corn, vegi oil? Has anybody tried this, or have the Peanut growers cornered the market on Deep Fried Turkey?

Due to the danger of oil spilling over the top when putting the turkey in the hot oil and when you pull it out, PENUT oil is recommended due to itÂ’s high flash point. If the deep fryer catches on fire, you will have a serious fire to deal with.

I guess if you are stuffing your turkey with Pineapple, Coconut Oil might be OK. I have always used heavy Cajun seasoning to hide any possibility of tasting the peanut oil; I have never considered using Coconut oil.

Dual viscosity isn`t going to work. Turns the oil milky. Straight weight only.

Has anyone ever deep fried a turkey without having boiling oil spit out and bubble over the top a bit? I watched a turkey being cooked in one of those confounded deep friers and it made a real mess. A 12 lb turkey was cooked in about 35 minutes, though.
Hey Topless... have you ever tried peanut oil? Would you like to?

It takes 3 minutes for every pound, and it will definetlyspill over the top.
I like topless idea about using KY, but I'm still having trouble with the thought of ****ing a turkey....   :yuk:

I always put an oil drip pan under the fryer - no mess after

Never dripped over. Ya`ll must be filling with too much oil. Or not a deep enough pot.

Fart and Smile usually, always Albertsons but Albertsons is expensive.
Also, I have found it and priced right too at Food 4 Less.

The secret to not make it boil over is to use a hook on the end of a broomstick to SLOWLY immerse the turkey. Start by dunking it down little by little, it should take about a minute or so to totally get it in the oil. I do like Toplesses idea though. :D

Make sure to thaw the turkey. There should be marks on the inside of the turkey frier to tell you how much oil to use. Usually about 3 gallons for a 20 pounder. Cover. Heat the oil to 350 degrees and then slowly summerge the turkey. DO NOT COVER!!! Make sure to keep the lid off during cooking. It will take a while to get the oil back up to 350 degrees. Just cook the turkey at 3 min per lb. and you'll do fine. Let the turkey sit for about 20-30 minutes before carving. ENJOY!:)

some good advice after getting the oil to 350 peel an onion and put the onion in the oil before the turkey, lessens the explosion quite a bit..derek
