That is a really really tough question to answer. There are so many types to choose from that offer a different experience. I generally favor the hardcore ski mountains and not the fuffy dilley dalley furcoat shopping stuff.
Alta/Snowbird
Mammoth (At least before Intrawest bought them and started all that development)
Bear Valley
Alpine Meadows
Telluride
Sugar Bowl
Blackcomb
Mary Jane (Winterpark) for bump skiing
Taos
Ski areas I really would prefer to stay away from are the fluffy places like
Vail
Aspen
Deer Valley / Park City
Heavenly
etc.....

River,
I think you are exactly right. Some of the best skiing was at Aspen, but it is too snobish for my taste. I try to avoid those places. Besides their lift tickets cost you an arm and a leg.

I hear you BB572. Some of the ritzy ski areas I've skied at have some great terrain (like the back bowls at Vail). But the price tag to ski and stay at those places and the over the top snob attitude aren't worth going to them IMHO.
Mammoth used to be one of my favorite areas but they are trying to make the place a desitination sell out ski area now. Its just as much about shopping, how you look, and drinking $10 coffee than skiing now days.

i think tha is the problem everywhere that you visit m(not you pers. river) every kid on the mt. has got something to prove...i dont get it...am i just getting older now?
A question for the older crowd...when you hit 30yoa did you get irritated by the kids and how they dressed and the "F@#$ing" attitudes that come with them?....holy shit!!! im at the top of the hill looking down!
i dont know if i'll pull the board out of the rafters this season!

You haven't lived on skis until you ski Switzerland. Pretty cheap to get to now as well.

Vail and Beaver Creek Colorado. I worked the lift lines at Vail during the 1984-85 ski season. The perks of working for the resort is skiing 3 days a week for free.

You haven't skied North America until you've made a late May/early June run down "Hail Mary" @ Squaw ... Use your "Rockers" ... Advise only Expert Skiers try it.

So many great places, so little time...
If I had to pick one place that really fits my style as a ski destination, I'd say Steamboat, big, laid back, great snow, just fun. Jackson and Taos are great for abusing yourself but I'm not into that any more. Alta is fun for a weekend but isn't somewhere I'd go for a week-long trip. Vail was awesome as I recall but the town is too high society for a hick like me! Was having a bad day when I skied Snowbird so I won't comment. Mammoth is cool but too crowded and Sierra Cement sucks. Purgatory is fun, good cheap hotels in Durango, and within driving range of AZ for a long weekend. Had a great day at Telluride once, seemed like a nice place and would like to try it again sometime. Damn, now I want to go skiing...
