I don't know about the rest of you but I do a TON of driving for my job. I rack up about 800 miles a week on the odometer.
Right now I am using my Durango for work and the 5.9 is lucky to see 13.5 MPG. So I'm spending a LOT of money on gas and putting WAY to much wear and tear on it.
With that said I would like to use the Duranga as a weekend only ride for trips to the mountains and pulling the boat around.
What would you guys recomend as a cheap commuter that's gas friendly, reliable, and not extremely pricey?
I have been looking on EBay at used cars but I'm a little skepticle about buying a car off of EBay. Have any of you bought a car through EBay and if so what would you advise I do to make sure I don't get burned and truley get a good deal.
The price is important. Insurance prices and gas mileage are HUGE factors. As is I'm spending $800 a month on car payment and insurance for the Durango so I want to find something under 2,500 that I can just pay cash for. At 22 years old I just can't afford full coverage insurance on another vehicle. I wish insuring a car was as cheap as insuring my boat. $160 a year for full coverage and $250 deductible!
Thanks.

My very first sales job out of school, they gave me a Honda Civic. I drove on average 1000 miles a week and it was a good car. All though it small as hell I would jam it in to 2nd gear pulling hills to pass cars that was fun.

Use Ebay as a price reference only. Find your car from a private party. Ask for service records. Run the car though Carfax to see it's history. Have it mechanically checked by a third party. Honda or Toyota best bet.
Always remember you are buying a car from someone who doesn't want it anymore. Your mission is to find out why. Dealers only offer wholesale book for a car if it is immaculate and in high demand. So most offers anywhere over wholesale book are generally entertained.

Got to vote for an SVT Ford Focus. Fun car, good gas mileage and tons of aftermarket goodies if wanted.

I recently got a '94 Honda Accord.. I get 25 mpg and it is a trouble free car. It was a little more than 2500, but you might be ale to find a 87 to 90 for around 2500.
Honda & Toyota are generally good for 250,000 to 350,000 miles.
As for e-bay motors, I've personally never bought a car from there, but a friend of mine has. Just make sure that you look at the car before bidding.. ask questions and make sure that you get answers before you buy...
Good Luck

Come out west to buy a used car - steer clear of any car driven on salted roads.
Buy a Honda or Toyota - they are the two best auto manufacturers in the world (IMO).
Buy a used Civic LX or EX (stay clear of the DX which used to be - probably still is - carbureted).
Negotiate hard - it's a buyer's market and there are PLENTY of used cars to select from!
