View Full Version : How old is your boat?

With all the shiny new boats in the shows, it made me wonder what is the average vintage of the boats active in the lifestyle.
I like my 95 Baja, but I try to keep it updated and customized rather than moving on.

My boat is a 79. But with the new stringers, new floor, new structural re-enforcements and new gel inside and out, it is about as new as a 25 year old boat can get. And when it is done, it will have about every modern convenience and technology that a 2004 jet boat would have

My 21' Howard is 20 years old. It still has the original gel coat, which is in good shape, but has been repowered several times and reupholstered 1 time. Damn there are quite a few here older than mine and lookin really good. That should say something for the quality built into these boats.
I still don't know how to post a picture here in the forum.

AdrenelineOD,
The only thing I noticed before and after Droop the Boat Turns way Better with more Control, This just a Seat of my Pants Feel. More Speed ? haven't noticed, more acceleration ? haven't noticed. I don't have GPS so maybe there is a Differents, but I noticed the Turns. About the Rough Ride? lets face it those Bahners don't even pretend to slice though wakes, I just use mine to get to the nearest cove, open the Cooler, float around & soak up the ray's :D

1986 Eliminator sprint. OB. Looks newer but you can see it's age a bit when you look close. This year I've done a lot to the motor and replaced a lot of the O.B.s electronics. I'm currently in the process of getting the powerhead of it's XP 150 V 6 O.B. rebuilt. Then I can start next year with the new rubrail, gel coat touch-up, gauges, etc it will need to look like new. I was tempted to get rid of it when it smoked it 's powerhead, but it has a somewhat unique hull style that has really grown on me....

The Spectra 18 is one of my favorite boats. I will be looking for one in a few years for my daughters, so if you ever want to unload it let me know - I'm about 4-5 years away (my twins are only 13 now). I don't want them going out to the Havasu house and taking my boat out!;)

Completely new bottom due to flip over on another boat, upholstery is in good shape with some pieces being done right now. We love driveing this boat because it rides smooth.
I've detailed the crap out of it and now looks very nice, as matter of fact Commander still builds this hull to this day so it must be popular for the "family boat".

I guess it's time, this was our 2nd or 3rd time out in this boat at Buena Vista, my wife and son were with me when we had just launched the boat and on our way down the lake to find the rest of the Posse members, well i found them from a short distance and as was came in to the shoreline to turn the back of the boat by goosing it, it did not turn, we are in 2ft of water at this point and since it did not turn i went up and over my friend Jeff's 18' kona, while we are in mid air the boat flipped ejecting my wife and son and pinned me underneath while flipped over. I thought to myself this is a horrible way to die as i gasped for air and only got water, my leg was pinned under the passenger side gunnell and HallettDave freed me up by lifting, not knowing i was even on that side of the boat (we figured that one out days later) i found a air pocket and sat there for sec. as i got my bearings straight i saw the daylight in front of me from the openbow and scooted along the sandy bottom toward the front when the damn ski locker hit me in the forehead (floating) i laughed at my self trying to figure out what the hell was this thing doing in my way while im trying to save my life (that part is funny now) I made it to the front and heard my wife saying "where is Doug!! where is Doug!!" at this point there must have been enough guys to lift the boat over cause as i scooted out and i helped them finish pushing the boat over and they were still looking for me, I said "im right here and ok" they were probably perplexed as to find out i was in a line of people helping push the boat over. All in all we were pretty lucky and thankfull to the friends and people who helped out and a special thanks to Jeff for having a low profile boat.
I bought Jeff a new boat (to him) and fixed my bottom and we've been out with the Posse several times since then. Not a day goes by that i want to be out on the water just like you guys but im still scared of speed out on the water, so it's a good thing my boat is slow (50-52mph) my wife and son were ok from the incident but really shook up. We are fine now and look forward to this season.
I really want to thank my Posse friends that were there and those that weren't because all of you and your families are special to me and makes the healing process much easier.
We are fine and this is the first time i've sat down and really pondered about it or even write about it.
Well that's the story and thanks for your concerns.......Big Doug

you're one lucky dude, as is your wife and kid. Glad no one was seriously injured, except that macho ego we all have about driving our boats way to fast at times.....I've gotten away with a few things I have looked back on and said, "now, that wasn't the brightest thing you've ever done" Fortunately, no incidents to report like the one above.

Summerlove, I hear ya on the macho thing  i've never been one to be to macho but let's face it we are men, ive really slowed down (litterally) to see life a little longer in the view finder so to speak, i take full responsibility of the incident.
We think of a couple of errors besides the driver
1. i left the rooster tail up (no turning then).
2. my rudder found a line in the sand preventing me to turn.
nonetheless it happed and am very careful now. I don't even drink, so i guess this is a good thing because the cop wasn't buying the story about "no alcohol" involvement. After he calmed down he was cool and didn't even write me up a ticket :D by law he is suppose to when involved in a boating incident.
Mirvin, is your boat for sale in your avatar ? if so then i think i saw it in the boat trader. :)

mirvin
02-02-2004, 02:53 PM
Doug, no i's not for sale but there's always at least one Crusader in there. I saw a blue one the other day. I just bought this one last summer so there might be an old ad floating around in cyberspace.

Not to cont the hyjack... But, I now know all the people involved (including Doug) and they are a great group. This was a bit of a "trial by fire " for all of them and from what I've heard they all came through it big time.:D :D I'll do my boating with this bunch anytime. My first season with my boat ended with me needing a new powerhead and a huge bill at a bad time. It is largely because of how much I value my assosiation with this bunch that, it is worth it to me to fork out the dough to get it fixed. :D nuff said....

SB, I grew up going to the river with a family that had two of those ArenaCraft boats. One was a 17' with Mercruiser that never did run right. It seemed like my dad towed that boat in every weekend.
They sold that one and bought an 18' jet with a 427 BBC. Well built boats. You're the only other person I've heard of that has one.

Doug--thanks alot for sharing your story. Wow~! That's how the
rest of us learn. Maybe your story will save someone elses life
sometime. On a personal level, you must be an outstanding
individual--you mentioned rather calmly that you bought the
other guy a replacement boat as if it were just another day on
the river. You're obviously a class act. It's folks like you that make the lake and the river a great place to bring our friends and families to. Good luck in the future!

04 Stingray 220lx 5.7HO w/thru hull (good for 3-5mph I hear.. :) ).
I really enjoy seeing all these classic flat bottoms and others here on the boards and at the Posse outings I've been to.
I hope to get myself one (not sure what kind yet) to fix up and keep beside my 'family' boat.
Thanks to all for sharing your pics and stories.
Doug, wow!!! thats all I can say! Glad all were ok!

Get that 04 Stingray outta here :) SoCalFun can't you see these are for the older boats and NOT the NEW ones  it's cool Larry, i guess your probably glad it's not a Bayliner now !!

Now, now Doug. Don't go comparing So Cal's boat to a Bayliner. It may look tame but with that Z plane hull it moves along very well and it's faster than many of the hot looking low profile jets around. ;)

Where the hell is Blown 472?
He's in the shadows with that Glastron of his all of the time...
That thing is A O K in my book. Hot boat... I'm not sure what that means but his G Carlson is definetly a cool old hotrod.
Lets see, a '76 maybe?
