I am buying a used boat from a friend that lives in Lake Havasu for 20k. I plan to transfer the boat and trailer into my name and keep it registered in AZ. Is Az like CA in that you are supossed to pay state sales tax on the purchase or can it just be transfered into my name and avoid the taxes ? If anyone knows the best way to do this please let me know.

In az, if you buy a used boat private party and keep it registered in Az. there is no sales tax.

Yeah what he said. However you do have to pay a beer tax to everyone who responds on this thread and agrees that there is no tax... ;) :D

Get Out ! You gotta be kidding. You mean the government doesn't have their hand out everytime you buy something in Az  . I own a home in Havasu I think I should look into becoming an Az resident.

Nah, you just need to buy a boat from a Zonie and keep it registered in Zonie. But tag the trailer with Ca. or else CHP will bust ya for driving a CA. Vehicle with Ca. DL and towing an AZ trailer.....Cali is the tax hog:rolleyes:

Dammit!! I just got a tax notice from the LA County Tax Assessor explaining how they'll be sending me a PROPERTY TAX BILL for my boat!!!
I really got the lady pissed off on the phone too:) I said I was unclear as to how they could charge me property tax on a motor vehicle parked on a piece of property that I've already paid property taxes on:) She wasn't amused.
No wonder everyone registers thier boat in AZ;)

All these guys are right. It cost me about 113$ to reg the boat in AZ as a non resident. It cost me 130$ to reg the trailer in STEAL MY MONEY CA. I figure I saved about 3 thousand by registering in AZ.
I also read that AZ is gonna start taxing private party sales, please say it isn't so!
