View Full Version : What do you want in your custom garage?

We are going to start a new division building and remodeling garages. I see a big enough demand here and not any real competition here in SD.
The plan is to build custom garages from the ground up with whatever they want. I've got a plan supplier with a couple dozen different styles. No more kitchens and bathrooms. Too many problems. It would also refurb existing garages from junkholder status to the cool ones with textured walls, epoxy or tile floors, nice cabinets counters, air compressors, and all that stuff.
I want to work up a brochure and unit pricing, so I need to know what to offer, so here is the question:
What do you want in your garage?
Thanks.

All the cool shops up in Alberta have wood burning stoves and a place sit and watch races on TV. A stove hood is nice to BBQ some snacks too.:D

I guess the first thing you'll want to know is you DON'T texture the interior wall in a garage! Clean and smooth, just like a .....

The first thing you need to do before you show up at my house is to figure out how to turn San Bernardino away for their "accessories cannot be over 50% of the FOOTPRINT of the house"
That squashed all hopes of making the garage big enough to install the jet in my boat.

In addition,
I want enough room to have 2 cars wide and 2 cars deep.
approx 22x40
enough room for a lathe, mill air compressor and such.
When can you have it done?

I've been acquiring a few bits and pieces along the way ready to do the remodel. A stainless beer fridge (duh, of course), furnace, air con, tv/home theater system, proper industrial cabinets with divided drawers and slide out racks, large stainless tool boxes(out go the ugly red Snap-on's), cool drop down halogens to compliment the flouro's. Did I mention a beer fridge?
Compressor is here, will be fully plumbed throughout, Tig welder still to come. Flooring? I'm undecided, not sure if I want the epoxy or stained concrete.
Large storage area above and a beer fridge.

A drywall ceiling, with air and power plumbed behing the drywall with drop down recoiling air hose reels and recoiling trouble lights with 110V outlets on them.
An external closet to house my two stage air compressor.
Plenty of bench space, plenty of shelf space, a large area of pegboard. A couple of bar stools and a dartboard, and a speedbag mounted over in the corner.
That car hoist looks neat, I'll take one of them, too.
2 garage doors on the front, and one on the rear (drive through into backyard), all with independent openers.
Gotta be detached from the house. That way when you're outside "working" on something (like an 18 pack) until 1.30 am, the missus is less likely to come looking for you.
A decent stereo, mounted out of the way.
Heating is a must, and a decent fan is a good idea out here in the I.E.
If you're a woodworker, a vacuum/dust collection system mounted outside and plumbed through the walls is a nice touch.
Painted floor is a must.
If you have bikes / quads, a Handy Air-Lift is great item to own.
That's all I could think of at short notice.
Thanks
CA Stu
PS Now if you're talking about what tools and equipment to stock this shop with, you're talking a whole 'nother list.

That's what I'm talking about.
A little heavy on the tools side of it, but if it is what is wanted....
A lightly laced handtrowel can look nice on the walls, but anything heavy would collect dust. Remember that a lot of folks just keep their cars in their garages, not everyone wants a badass shop style setup.

I was going to post that link... Great stuff..
The ultimate garage is a strip joint with cool tool boxs, a/c, heat, full surround sound, a sofa bed, a keg, a microwave, a bigscreen tv, and a george forman grill..
Basically everything but the wife :D

You mean, people actually can fit cars in their garage? What a waste of good shop space!! :D

I think the absolute best thing you can do in your business to make yourself unique, is to specialize in small garage optimization. I have an old house with a single car garage and you have to get really creative when you are working on projects. I also do side work in my driveway quite often and I would REALLY like to have any tips in space/storage....

Check this stuff out if you're looking at putting in a garage floor (http://www.garagefloorprotection.com/commercial_flooring.htm)
It's impervious to any automotive fluid. My buddy is using the Heavy Duty Coin style sheeting that costs $396 for a 9'x20'. It comes in all sorts of sizes and colors. THey also make a cheaper grooved version in many different colors. It took him about 1.5 hours to install. Its semi glossy, and is very slip resistant when wet.
