Anyone got an idea of what type of mileage i will be getting with a 496 on 255 Hallett. Average cruising spped of probably 35-40 mph. I guessing around 3 mpg.

I can get 3-3.5mph in a 25 Shockwave with a 496HO.

Does it matter? Will you change your boating habits or quit boating entirely?

By your screen name and avatar I assume your'e a fireman.
Think of it this way. Milage on fire apparatus is almost never considered (at least in my department). Partly because you'll never get a true account of actual mileage. The fire engine spends lots of time idling, full throttle runs to the calls, pumping operations etc. Calculating true mileage is impossible in an active fire truck.
Same with a boat I think. How much time do you spend just cruising, WOT etc. Also, without an odometer it'd be impossible to acuratly tell how many miles you've traveled, at least without a GPS.
I guess my opinion is, who cares :D I have a fairly strong 509 Merlin that I don't give a rats a$$ about mileage. Maybe that's just me. All this talk about gas prices going up isn't gonna make me change my boating habits. I fill the boat up, launch, drive, fill up some more and continue having fun.
Gallons of fuel per hour? Now that's something I could use.

Not to worry, Topock marina (and gas dock) is smack in the middle of that Havasu-->Needles run you were talking about:D
