Well one more Question before I head up to Anahiem boat show to order my Shockwave 21 Skier, what are the advantages of a set back jet?....Robert:D

I've got a setback jet, it allows for more room. The biggest plus, IMO, is the inspection cover (?) is outside of the hull. If you ever suck up junk, (weeds, rope, etc) it's much easier to clean.
cost is more, may be a better performer
Go for it.

I agree, interior space and ease of quick pump clean out outside the boat. However performance is probably bigger than we think. Most racers are using set back pumps these days. Perhaps Jungle Boy can shed some light here. I am not sure they will even install a pump in a new boat without it being set back a bit.

So then, my E pump is a race pump?
:D

Definitley better performance , and best thing is you dont have to sink the damn boat when cleaning shit out of the pump. Good luck on the new boat .

The further the pump is towards the rear of the hull, the less surface area in the water creating drag. This equals better performance.

How much does it add to the length of the jet I'm limited in size due to having a small garage.....Thanks Rob

I have a setback on mine, I am really happy with it. It may at the most add 6"+ to the length. It makes the boat steer better when on plane as well.

To me the benefits of a set back are:
* More room in the boat
* More weight toward the transom
* Intake is farther back making it harder to blow the pump out during hard turns or rough water
* Like others have said easier to get crap out of the bowl if you suck something up
* More leverage when trimming the boat
* Easier to change impellers
The disadvantages are:
* Cost
* They have a tendancy to leak more than non-set backs
* Makes the boat longer (i.e. storage)

6 inches longer should be ok but will still be close....Rob

The other thing to be sure of when getting a set back is making sure they use the pump braces on the inside of the transom. It make the install much stronger.

Now that I re-read this thread, Shockwave does a great job installing jets. I had a 21 LS jet for quite a while. You don't really even need to ask them to install a pump brace on a set back. They will just do it.
What motor are you going with? What are your goals? Are they still spec'ing Dominator pumps? Its a solid choice

454 385hp motor, and its mainly for lake martinez, also rivercrazy
is that about right just 6in on the setback thanks again Rob

I also had that motor in my former 21LS. It ran about 57-58 with a box stock American Turbine AT-309 pump with a box stock A impeller. The motor turned this impeller about 4700 rpm.
If your after the last 1-2 mph on the top end I'd recommend an AB impeller. It will allow the motor to turn about 5,000 rpm and let the motor make a bit more HP.
If your after better holeshot and cruising efficency go with an A impeller. It will cruise at speeds requring less rpm than the AB.
I'd say 4-6 inches is what to expect.
That's a great motor. Very reliable. I put 400 hard hours on it without a hitch. And if you want to do upgrades later on its a great platform. Its got all forged parts and the better GM heads.

Robert,
I noticed that you live in SD, if you want to take a look at my setup let me know. I have a 21' ultra with a setback, it will be pretty similar to what you are buying as far as setup.

I believe my former 21LS was about the same length as the step skier. They share the same bottom but have a different deck.
I had a pull out tongue that was just about even with the nose of the boat. With a standard Jet installation, I was right about 22.5 feet or so. I bet with a swing away tongue and the set back, you will be in the 23-23.5 foot range.
My guess anyway
