I had to get rid of my previous antivirus programs to download a new version of viruscan and start clean after my computer caught some kind of STD
I'm good to go as far as virus protection now, but I'm getting popups constantly even when my browser(internet explorer) isn't open--WTF
I did a quick search here since I know this topic has been discussed a few times......it got me to panicware (http://www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html)
but which one should I download?

Do you have any pop up blocking stuff on your computer?

popup stopper is a good choice. It's free to start with and does block any new window from opening...
If you have the means, and have a broadband connection to the internet (cable, DSL, etc) then invest in a router. It is basically a box that hides your computer from the internet and places itself in harms way from the constant deluge of popups, trojans and other locust of the information superhighway. For $50 or less on sale you could give yourself some decent protection, then all you'll have to worry about is spyware that you "invite" into your computer, but that's another story all together.

I have all the popup blocking stuff and no popups anymore.
The one that worked the best was from my ISP. SBC yahoo.

I have a router on my cable hook up at home. Very little to no pop ups plus it protects you from virus type stuff. If you have a cable hook up, you really should get a router.

Thanks, I'll download the popup stopper and get back to you on its effectiveness:cool:
Spyware: how do you know if you've got it? It kinda burns when I pee, is that bad?;)

I'll check out router's but I'm worried that I might have "invited" spyware in without knowing it?:frown:

I have DSL with a router. I had the same problem with the pop-ups. I installed Adware and Spybot S&D. They helped a little but not much. I had to hire a tech to come out and manually remove all the spy software from my computer. I think I picked up the spy software from clicking on one of the links from this board since this is about the only site I really visit. I no longer click on any links unless I am sure they are safe.

I thought I was the only one. I think I got it from this site too. I got this program, that I can't find, from adsrve.com. It basically opens up a new window, downloads a popup from a site and then displays it. The one that I get most from it is a "security" message saying that I need to update my computer virus protection and to "click here". Yeah right, anywhere on the page is a "click here" where it shows it will go to a site. I have downloaded all of the virus stuff I can. It's not a virus, it must have downloaded as a program. I have run search after search to try to find this crap with no luck. I downloaded adaware, spybot, and a bunch of others that can't find it. I have the cox.net popup running and the popupstopper running but they aren't designed to stop a program like this one. I went to adserve.com and they have a message on their site saying they are not responsible for the popups and are taking legal action against adsrve.com. I have way too much on this to start over now. Any one have any ideas? Anyone have this program?

I have that Norton anti-virus stuff too. It didn't catch this program because it looked like a program that I wanted to download. I haven't been able to locate where it is saved, so I can't get rid of it. That is the only way I can see that it made it past Norton.

The standard Norton antivirus won't do anything for spyware or the like, but the Norton Antivirus Professional does. It even blocks some of the nastier ones from getting on your computer. It's a bit more expensive (3X) but worth it.

What op system are you running? Win98 is the most common, but you can try this with 98 and up.
Click start, run and enter in the little box "msconfig" and hit enter. This will bring up a configuration screen and may look a bit worrysome. Neverfear. Goto the tab on the top that says Startup, look at the list of things loaded up on your computer and start unchecking the boxes. Read the path and see what program it is associated with. If it's with your antivirus, leave it be, also the other two programs that are absolutely necessar are "systray" and "explorer". If you uncheck something that makes your computer die, you can go back in and check it again no problem.
Before you do this, download a popular free spyware program, Adaware from lavasoft is one, update it and run it. Delete any file it catches. It may take more than one scan. After that, go for the modification of the startup file. That should help cleanup any bad programs running on your machine.

You need to identify the pop-up software and then go into add/remove in your control panel and manually remove it. Another problem with the pop-up software that loads on your computer is that they will switch identities or names to avoid detection. It can be a royal pain in the ass. I was ready to take a baseball bat to my computer before I had it fixed.

I'm gonna go ahead and mention to turn off system restore (if it's on) before removing spyware manually. Once you're sure it's gone then turn it back on.

I will try that. It should work for XP right? I have tried to go to the Norton site and look for that adsrve.com in their search. They say to go to your regedit and look for it in some specific places, but I have never seen it where they say to look. If you are in regedit, a program can't hide right? I have tried to see if it was a hidden file in the regedit, but there doesn't seem to be a show all hidden files as a selection like on a folder. I am not sure about the system restore being on. That is a good idea. I may be deleting the right program, then when I reboot it may turn back on. I don't think so, but I will look when I get home.
I am almost sure that this program isn't named anything close to adsrve. I have even tried to search for the popup locations that come up and all I get is the standard cookie. I can delete them all day long, of course it never helps.

For those that are getting unwated pop ups while not browsing....check to see what programs are installed...anything not familiar de-install. Get an adware and pop up blocker and turn them on auto...
If still getting pop ups, there are these advertisers such as "GAIN" that actually load on to your computer if you have ever accepted one of their OK to download messages. It will not show up in control panel. You need to go find it under program files/common files (I think...its been a while)....
Either way, something has been loaded and now you have to find it...also another give away to these trojan loaders, is check your seach bar in Internet Explorer...some of these load and replace your search bar and start loading advertising as well.

If you install ZoneAlarm (free basic), it will allow you to select which programs connect to the internet. It "learns" which are the desired internet access programs.

It also blocks intrusions.

I had the same problem. Surprisingly Yahoo's free pop-up blocker stopped 99.9% of mine. Every once in awhile I'll get one, but not often. It also trackes how many its stopped so far. I've only had it a few months and I'm up to 720 blocked.

If you have XP the most likely scenario is that the popups are coming from your "Messenger" program (especially if you get them when you don't have a browser window open) and there is no popup blocker that will stop them.
You have to go into the messenger program and shut it down. Do a search on here for messenger, I know the way to shut it down has been posted on here before.

Get Spybot and Ad-aware too. Those 3 programs will solve many of you headaches.
