After going with a couple different brands, I won't buy anything but a Sony for TV's. I have a 35" in my living room and a 27" flat screen in the bedroom. I keep getting caught up in new toys but there is a 65" XBR Sony with my name on it in the near future.

LR, You'd have to buy a sick plasma to get the picture quality of a high end 65" bigscreen... And you get a smaller picture, but you don't have another piece of furniture to deal with... They all have their pluses and minuses...

Like I said, I'm hooked on the Sony TV's. Back from the days when the remote was a barely audible clicking deal that you could run the tv with a Slinky at the right frequency, right up until now. I think Sony is one of the only ways to go on TV's. We had Sony TV's that were 20 years old and still worked. My 35" is going on 7 years old and weighs about as much as a small block Chevy... :D

I have a massive 4 year old 20" TV in the living room, and nothing in the room yet. It kinda sucks, but I have my eye on a new 30" Widescreen HDTV from Sony or Phillips for the living room, and then more the 20" to my room. The roommates are on their own-hehe. I have a built in Entertainment area in my living room, and this is all that will fit. Someone measured wrong.
Would love to have a 42" plasma above my fireplace, and one in my bedroom. But I think I would rather put that cash to a New Howard (what a shock huh?)

That's what your sales guys say when they try to sell you a warranty. First of all they haven't been around long enough to really say; However, The manufacturers predict the lifespan to be 7-10 years, just like a standard tube tv.... Most of the earlier models didn't have screen problems, but problems keeping the cb's cool. There is no plasma gas that goes out either. Just like tube tv's, they use phospherous. Over a long period of time the phospherous looses it's properties and basically stops glowing they way it did when it was fresh. You can almost think of a plasma tv as having thousands of little crt's to display the picture...

Waiting on Intel's LCoS engine powered flat panels to come out this year. Should be the best thing going on flat screens (yes, better than plasma, LCD, and TI's DLP-based TVs).
The plasma bandwagon jumpers will regret buying those things when they're last on the display technology list. Cheap plasmas suck - gotta spend around $10K to get a good one like the ones from Fujitsu and others (awesome units but way too much $).
Best picture for the money are the rear projection TVs (RPTVs) - Mitsubishi is tough to beat on quality - and the prices for them are coming way down because all the plasma-wannabes are scooping them up at whatever price. Mitsubishi even offers built-in automatic convergence which is necessary with the RPTVs to keep the picture perfect.

I don't see a lifespan of 3 - 5 years there. Let me look again.
EDIT
They do list 25,000 - 30,000 hours.
Using the low number of 25,000:
It you watch TV 10 hours a day (not likely) and 365 days a year (not likely) that is still over 6 years of life.
I do agre that the LCD is a better deal at this stage.

Yes, but a 50" LCD will be well over 8K when they come out... Mitsubishi's 40" LCD panel lists at 8k...
A good 32" Panel LCD is 6k....
Dan,
You must have some old XBR's.. They haven't made 27" xbr's since 1994... A 20xbr since 1989...
Bandwagoners on Plasmas? Are you a moron or what? The tv fits a particular need at a particular time. I guess everyone should wait 8 more years for the 50.00 100" nanotube smellovision to come out? I guess you're waiting for the hydrogen powered boat?

Yeah genius, my Sony 27" TV is from 1998 and still rocks.
And since your opinion differs from mine then I must be a "moron." Of course I'd call those that spend $2,000 - $3,000 on cheap, low quality plasma screens rocket scientists. And the ones that spend $10,000 and more, I'd call them foolish for buying over-priced flatscreen technology (all for the sake of getting thin, cool-looking plasma screens). When you can get a rear projection big screen Mitsubishi (or other) TV for half the price - one that offers a better picture - I'd say most of those rushing out to buy plasmas are wasting their money (or as you say, fitting a particular need at a particular time). But you're the A/V pro who knows everything so there's no need for anyone to post on this thread after you do. :D
For everyone else who wants to learn about A/V - you can find out what a small company by the name of "Intel" has in store for the world of displays you can click here (http://www.intel.com/design/celect/technology/lcos/) :D

That just what I need in my boat, so my kids can take over that tv also and watch Sponge Bob, while I am kicking it in the channel.

May as silly as spending thousands and thousands and thousands on a TV in the first place.

That's really going on a boat??? I'll be interested to see how long it lasts. G'luck with that!!! ;)

why would it not last? if you mean the plasma tv, it is going behind plexi glass. the speakers will be behind grill cloth but i will still probably have to replace them every couple of years. I will be running 4 times the power they are supposed to handle which will probably blow them before the water harms them.

this is the boat that the radar arch is going on. not the cat.

i built it from scratch and made it strong enough to jump up and down on it. it is all foam cored fiberglass built just like you would build a boat. I hauled it from the paint booth to my shop sitting up like that on a trailer and that was alot more abuse then it will have on the boat. and we were going 75mph on the highway and the boat only does 20mph so it should be fine

Lcos has been out for over a year. In My Lowly Opinion, it currently sucks. Once the bugs are worked out, it will be the best picture available on a rear projection tv... Until then, DLP will rule. BTW, I see the rainbow effect, so I prefer an LCD rear projection...
If you want the best picture possible, buy a 27" HD tv...
People don't just purchase Flat panel tv's for a bling factor. They also buy them because they no longer want large electronic furniture. And you don't have to spend a grip to get a good one ;)
You remind me of the type of guy who researches product information so throughly that it's either outdated by the time you decide to buy it or a new technology comes along and you start the cycle all over again. I guess it's the same way with your boat? Atleast I know what boat I want... I've been waiting for Jerry to buy a Daytona for 1.5 years :D
BTW, there are plenty of rocket scientists and foolish people (as you put it)buying the current a/v technology. When something new comes out, they'll sell the old stuff or give it to their kids so they can purchase the newest of the latest and greatest.. Did you know they do the same thing with cars?
Dan, You are a moron. You always have been, and you always will be. It's time for you to accept it, the people who surround you already have... Right Jordy? :D
I'm no A/V pro, but I do know more about the subject than the average Joe. If you would like to speak to a pro, I will gladly give you the numbers to speak with a few of the engineers who sit in labs for 7 hours a day working on the stuff. I can even get you the names of a couple engineers who work for a very reputable video mfg who reverse engineer the competition's products. Bottom line is that I know what bullshit lines people believe that retail salespersons use to pursuade people into purchasing what's in stock and what can be an overkill purchase. Forgive me for giving input in a forum for trying to help out. I will gladly sign off for good....

just moved up from a 1979 MGA 19" to a Phillips 32" in the family room. Each of the kids have a tv in their room but none in our bedroom, I'd rather be occupied in other ways.
I dunno, I just can't see spending a bunch of money on a tv that I don't watch very much.

Had my 55 Mits HD and related "stuff" since 2000.
I have followed the Hi Def scene for all of those years and have seen definite improvements. Whether or not 2006 brings what we would hope is another thing altogether, I would say that consumer pressure is what will drive the amount of programming but currently not everyone offers true Hi Def anyway so quality may be compromised (Fox being the worst at dragging their feet).
My next step will be a screen and projector, the 55 will end up in the garage and I'll have a Pioneer on the bedroom wall.

Mitsubishi platinum 48" widescreen projection. Fully integrated with HD tuner built in. I can literaly get HD broadcasting (locals) with a pair of rabbit ears. I opted for Time Warner cable for now to get HBO in High Def. I actually bought a Kenwood surround sound first and the big sound didn't go with the wimpy 27" TV so I got a TV to match the the big sound. had mine for a little over a year and been very pleased with it. I actually had the house spec'd out for a big screen when we built it. I later used that as justification for my purchase. It just didn't look right without a bigscreen;)
