I think it is pretty much like calling someone a dork, knob, or something like that. Although I have not heard that word in a long time so I could be wrong.

If it was my kid it would mean "smack me up side the head" they figure it out pretty fast. Kids aren't as dumb as you would think. They use words like this because they get away with it and you look like an idiot for letting them use it. There is a way to bridge the generation gap by telling what it meant in your day.
