PICKLEtheLOAD

So I sold the pickle :( and now its off to the NASCAR race on SUNDAY (5/2). This will be my first race, does anyone have any gouge on when to start my trek toward the track to avoid the masses? I will be departing from BIG BEAR early SUNDAY morning, just trying to figure out what time to start and attempt to avoid a nightmare (or is it just inevitable?). Any other hints and/or suggestions to get the most out of this experience are appreciated. Thanks...

We are going to try to get to the track around 7am, and get a good spot for the motorhome. 94 flair (ugly) I might make a poster so all the ***boaters can stop by for a brew!

I live about 3 minutes from the track, and there is no good time. I left the house at 8:30 am, 2 years ago, and I missed the green flag, because of the traffic.
Last year I left at 8:00 and just made it for the "Gentleman, Start your engines".
From anywhere, you don't want to get to this area after 8:00am, unless the sherriff's dept has figured it out better for traffic flow.

our friends use to live in the villages and ride their bikes down. They would always pass us in traffic.

I strongly suggest taking Metrolink as opposed to driving. Although the post-race train boarding is a painful experience. Total disorginization on the part of metrolink.:yuk: It beats drinking and driving though, as the long wait to board the train sobers you up, and pisses you off at the same time. The I-10 traffic after the race is brutal!!!

Well we take the motorhome (so we have a bathroom and fridge) and BBQ after the race, untill the traffic lets up. It takes hours....when they start to let the in-field go, you can make a left on cherry and go up to the 210. Stay away from the 10 & 15!

I agree with the metro link idea, otherwise I'd say take the 30 "Highland Ave" to Cherry and head south. Stay off the 10 and the 15

Some thin to share.....
Sunday will be here before we know it, so here is some information all of you might like to read about California Speedway (see attachments). Below you'll find the schedule for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Race. If you have any questions you can log onto www.californiaspeedway.com or

WEEKEND NOTES AND FUN FACTS
Southern California Welcomes Return of NASCAR: The spring return of NASCAR to California Speedway marks the first of two appearances of NASCAR’s two top racing series, NEXTEL Cup and Busch, to the Southern California area. The second appearance will also be at California Speedway with the “Finish Under the Lights” Pop Secret 500 Labor Day Weekend. The speedway has sold out each of the seven previous NEXTEL Cup races. Tickets for this year’s event are available at 1-800-944-RACE (7223) or online at www.californiaspeedway.com. The grandstand capacity is 92,000 seats. In addition, a sold out infield of more than 1,800 RVs will be placed side-by-side throughout the weekend. Guests will also view the race from 63 Terrace Suites overlooking pit road and 28 luxury Skybox Suites above the main grandstands. Here is a look at some other stadiums in California and the capacity for each:
Rose Bowl – 91,136
Edison Field – 45,050
Dodger Stadium – 56,000
Qualcomm Stadium – 71,000
SBC Park – 63,146
“America’s Ultimate Race Place”: In 2004, California Speedway will once again play host to six major weekends of racing, welcoming five different sanctioning organizations (NASCAR, AMA, Grand American Road Racing Association, Indy Racing League and HSR-West) to “America’s Ultimate Race Place.” Within those sanctioning bodies, the speedway hosts a plethora of racing series – NEXTEL Cup, Busch, Craftsman Trucks and Grand National Division, West Series from NASCAR; Superbikes, Supersport, Superstock and Formula Xtreme from AMA; Rolex Sports Car and Grand-Am Cup from Grand American; IndyCar and Menards Infiniti Pro from IRL; and 12 different classes of historic racing machines from HSR-West. In addition, the speedway is the home of the quarter-mile NHRA Sanctioned dragstrip – California Dragway. The strip hosts the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series, NHRA O’Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing Series and the NHRA Street Legal Drag Racing Program, as well as a variety of other events throughout the year.
What About the Other Days: With nearly 300 calendar days of track activity, there aren’t too many “off” days at California Speedway. The facility remains busy with a variety of track rentals from driving schools to test sessions to club events. The speedway’s road courses have benefited a number of local racing organizations from motorcycles to sports cars, giving them a premier facility to compete or test their skills. In addition, the speedway has been featured in a number of commercials, photo shoots and Hollywood movies – most recently “NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience.”
Economic Catalyst: California Speedway is an economic stronghold in Fontana, and the Inland Empire, as well. According to a study by Dr. John Husing, the entire economic impact of the speedway’s events and daily operations in 2003 totaled $135.7 million, with approximately $84.7 million coming from a single NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series weekend. In 2004, the economic impact is expected to grow to $220 million. An estimated $4.2 million in taxes (property, sales and transit occupancy) flows to area jurisdictions, mostly in San Bernardino County, each year as a result of California Speedway’s various activities.
Eighth Season Of Racing: California Speedway opened its doors in June of 1997 with the Inaugural NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series California 500 Presented by NAPA and more than 90,000 guests watched Jeff Gordon win the 500-mile race. Since 1997, the Speedway has hosted seven NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events, seven NASCAR Busch Series races, seven NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races, eight NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series races, three IROC races, three AMA Superbike events, two Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series events, two Grand-Am Cup Series races, two IRL IndyCar Series events, one IRL Menards Infiniti Pro Series race, six CART Champ Car races and five Dayton Indy Lights Series races.
Speedway changes: Since the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series visited California Speedway in 2003; there have been several changes to the facility. Here’s a look at those improvements:
· Lights: As you look around California Speedway’s 2 mile, D-shaped oval, you’ll see the newly installed lighting system. From turn 1 around the oval to turn 4, there are 74 freestanding light poles reaching 70-ft. to 120-ft. into the air. Along the back of the grandstands there are 29 poles that reach 50-ft. into the air and there are 24 nine-foot poles on top of the skyboxes. Inside the oval, behind the retaining wall there are close to 400 mirtran lighting structures. Approximately 1,500 fixtures (1,500 watt and 2,000 watt metal halide bulbs) will give out 2.5 million watts of power when turned on. The lighting system was completed ahead of schedule and will be turned on during the Auto Club 500 weekend.
· SAFER Barriers: During April, Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) Barrier walls were installed at the superspeedway. The entrance to turn one and running continuously to the exit of turn two and at the entrance of turn three through the exit of turn four will have operational barriers for the King Taco 200, Stater Bros. 300 presented by Gatorade and Auto Club 500 races. Another set of walls will also be in place on the inside retaining wall off the exit of turn two and extends approximately two-thirds of the way down the backstretch.
· New Gatorade Victory Lane: New for the Auto Club 500 weekend events is the new Gatorade Victory Lane. Located just off of turn four, near pit in and adjacent to the west terrace suites, the victory lane features permanent photographer steps and a fenced in area to help facilitate the large numbers of individuals in Gatorade Victory Lane. The new location made its debut during the TOYOTA Indy 400 and the American Racing Wheels 200 last September to alleviate difficulties crossing pit row at the completion of races while race cars are entering the garage area.
· Expanded Parking in Lots 3, 4 & 5: Three parking lots, Nos. 3, 4 and 5 have been expanded to hold an additional 400-plus cars during this weekend’s Auto Club 500. The expansion covered a 3.5-acre stretch of land alongside Cherry Avenue that was previously a grass area. The enhancement included additional asphalt and curbing to the area that now has more than a combined 8,200 paved parking stalls.
Millions on the Line: There will be more than $7.3 million on the line during the upcoming NASCAR weekend. The NEXTEL Cup Series purse is $5,695,656, while the Busch Series event offers a purse of $1,436,794. The West Series purse is $228,072.
Auto Club 500 Pre-Race Ceremonies: California Speedway is “America’s Ultimate Race Place,” and to prove it throughout the nation some of the most unique experiences are in the works. Beginning the pre-race festivities by presenting the stars and stripes will be the U.S. Navy’s Color Guard Team. This team represents the South West Regional Maintenance Command based in San Diego, which is the largest Ship repair facility on the West Coast for the NAVY by the NAVY. Following the colors will be a special jump by the NAVY Parachute Team from San Diego, Calif., affectionately referred to as the NAVY Leapfrogs. Motor Racing Outreach’s Bob Petersen will give the Invocation followed by New Zealander Hayley Westenra who will sing the National Anthem. Westenra, 16, is in the middle of a two month Radio Disney School Tour where she is singing for students around the U.S.A. The Strike Squadron VFA 113 from NAS Lamoore, Calif., will maneuver four F-18 hornets over California Speedway’s massive facility. Following the fly over the command to start engines will be given by honorary grand marshal Auto Club President and CEO Tom McKernan, and Spike Helmick, Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol, will wave the green flag celebrating the CHP’s 75th anniversary of service. The Eagle One Shav Glick Award will be presented to Les Richter during pre-race ceremonies as well.
Stater Bros 300 presented by Gatorade Pre-Race: The four F-18 hornets from NAS Lamoore will conduct a flyover for the Stater Bros 300 presented by Gatorade. University of Redlands student Alexis Chadburn will return to California Speedway to sing the National Anthem and Bob Petersen of MRO will give the invocation.
King Taco 200 Pre-Race: Co-hosts of Univision’s weekly sports program “Accion Deportiva” Francisco Pinto and Alejandro Luna will serve as Honorary Grand Marshals for the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series King Taco 200. As the stock cars line-up on pit road for the 100-lap race be sure to check out Kevin Conway’s No. 28 Chevrolet. His car will feature a special paint scheme created by 18-year-old Kira Banos who won the Totally Against Graffitti (TAG) design contest.
Jeff Gordon Holds Many California Speedway Records: Four-time NEXTEL Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon holds numerous California Speedway records, including the best average finishing position, 6.6 in the seven previous NEXTEL Cup Series races here. Gordon holds the record of the most miles completed with 3,498 miles, missing the perfection mark by only two miles when he finished one lap down in 2002. Other records for Gordon, include most laps led, 331, and most money won here, $858,373. Whether in Gatorade Victory Lane, which he’s attained twice (1997 and 1999), or nearly there, with no finish worse than 16th, Gordon has been part of the closest margin of victory when Rusty Wallace edged him to the Start/Finish Line in 2001 by 0.270 of-a-second or the widest margin of victory when he stretched his lead in 1999 to finish 4.492 seconds ahead of Jeff Burton.
Kurt Busch Walk Of Fame Induction: Kurt Busch’s win in last year’s Auto Club 500 earned him a spot in the speedway’s Walk of Fame. On Friday at 5:00 p.m., Busch’s induction ceremony will take place at Gate 12 behind the main grandstands. The induction is open to the public. A plaque will be placed in the cement outside the gate, as well as his footprints and signature. Busch, who hails from Las Vegas, will receive a special gift from the speedway.
Miles/Races: Michael Waltrip has logged more miles than any other driver around California Speedway’s two-mile oval. Waltrip has competed in 15 races in seven years at the speedway, including NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series. He has completed 5,400 miles, 3,292 in NEXTEL Cup, 1,796 in the Busch Series and 312 in the Truck Series. Ken Schrader has competed in 15 races here as well. Schrader has run all seven Cup races, along with six West Series races and two Craftsman Truck Series events here.
A NASCAR Sweep: Kevin Harvick, Mike Wallace and Ron Hornaday are the only drivers to compete in at least one of every NASCAR-sanctioned event at California Speedway. The trio has competed in NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series and West Series at one time or another over the previous seven years. Brendan Gaughan looks to join their ranks when he attempts to qualify for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Auto Club 500.
NEXTEL Cup Series Rookies – Class of 2004: Brendan Gaughan, Kasey Kahne, Scott Riggs, Johnny Sauter, Brian Vickers and Scott Wimmer are the six members of this year’s Raybestos Rookie class in NEXTEL Cup. Kahne got the season off to an amazing start, with three second-place finishes, one third-place finish and two poles in just the first seven races. He has two Busch Series starts at California Speedway, with his best finish of fourth-place during last year’s californiaspeedway.com 300. The Washington state native’s success so far this season might be challenged when he takes on fellow West Coast driver Gaughan, who has competed in seven events here, including his 2000 West Series victory. Another rookie to watch in the Auto Club 500 will be the 2002 California Speedway Busch Series race winner Scott Riggs. He led the remaining 49 laps of that event, through two restarts, to claim his second NASCAR Busch Series victory in only his ninth start. Other notables include 2003 NASCAR Busch Series Champion Brian Vickers, Johnny Sauter, who helped capture the 2003 NASCAR Busch Series Owners Championship for Richard Childress Racing, and Scott Wimmer, who finished third in the 2004 season opener Daytona 500.
Stater Bros 300 presented by Gatorade: Several NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series regulars are planning on running double duty at California Speedway in the Stater Bros 300 presented by Gatorade event on May 1st. Cup regulars expected to compete in the 150-lap Busch series event include Jeff Burton, Robby Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Johnny Sauter, Tony Stewart, Jeremy Mayfield and Michael Waltrip.
Special Paint Schemes: NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Driver Ryan Newman will be running a unique paint scheme for the Auto Club 500. Newman’s No. 12 Dodge will display a special Mobil 1 30th Anniversary silver and black design.
Designated Drivers: Designated Drivers Inc., Miller Brewing Company and Gate City Beverage have teamed up for a “Partners in Prevention” program during the NASCAR weekend. Designated Drivers Inc., which has been in operation for approximately six years in other regions of the country, will have booths located at Gates 12 and 14 that will offer fans informational material aimed at creating impaired-driving awareness in a positive forum. In the event someone does not wish to drive, Designated Drivers will arrange to have a trained, licensed, insured driver transport them home in their own vehicle free of charge. The drivers work in teams, allowing one to drive the guests’ car home, and another driver to follow and transport the Designated Driver back to the speedway. The ride home is courtesy of Miller Brewing Company and Gate City Beverage.
A Giant Thank You: During the Auto Club 500 weekend guests will have several opportunities to thank U. S. Military personnel. What began as a service project for the students of Lutheran High School in Orange, Calif. is sweeping the region and is the perfect opportunity to write a letter to a past or present military member to show appreciation for their sacrifices, dedication and service to our country. Drop of your letter at the DeWalt display. Other California Speedway Fun Facts and Special Notes
California Speedway: California Speedway stands on the historic site of the former Kaiser Steel Mill. In November of 1993, discussions took place between Penske Corporation and Kaiser Ventures Inc. and an agreement was reached in the spring of 1994. Groundbreaking began Nov. 22, 1995. On June 22, 1997, the long awaited return of NASCAR racing to Southern California was realized with the California 500 Presented by NAPA. Cost for the two-mile superspeedway was estimated at $120 million.
The Water Tower: The concrete water tower, located in the center of the infield, is the lone remaining landmark from the Kaiser Steel Mill. The water tower rises 136 feet from the center of the Infield, serving as a reminder of when Liberty ships that supplied the Allied Forces during World War II were built at the mill. The mill closed December 31, 1983.
The Landscape: Home is nearly 600 acres including 131 acres in the Infield and a 30-acre parking lot off of Napa Street near parking lot 11.
What about the Track: The track is a two-mile, D-shaped oval. Considered a superspeedway, banking is 14 degrees on turns 1-4, 11 degrees along the frontstretch and three degrees down the backstretch. The track is 75-feet wide with a 15-foot apron. The backstretch is 2,500 feet and the frontstretch is 3,100 feet in length. Pit road is 2,200 feet long with 44 pit stalls. The garage area is home for over 100 cars in three garages during race weekends.
The Trophy: The winner of the Auto Club 500 receives a replica of the Les Richter Trophy, named after the former Los Angeles Rams great, NASCAR executive, IROC chairman and current vice-president for International Speedway Corporation. The driver’s name is added to the perpetual Les Richter trophy that remains at the speedway.
Location: Located in Fontana, California, the speedway is four miles Northeast of the I-10 and I-15 interchange, 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, 60 miles west of Palm Springs and 100 miles north of San Diego.
The Scoring Pylon: The scoring pylon made its debut during September 1998, CART Champ Car race. The four-panel scoring pylon located at the tri-oval by the start/finish line stands 144 feet tall. Total light bulbs? Stop counting at 10,240 bulbs.
Washingtonia Filifera or Mexican Fan Palms: It’s always asked, so here’s the tree talk. There are 298 palm trees on the property including 61 down the backstretch. What kind you ask? How about 31 Canary Palms, the largest of the palm family on site, followed by 150 Washingtonia Filifera (the mid-sized palms) and 117 Mexican Fan Palms (the skinniest of the bunch).
On A Clear Day: Cucamonga Peak towers over the backstretch of the speedway. The peak is part of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountain ranges.
Get all the Information: Racing fans will get all the information they need on 13 message boards, four Sony Jumbo Trons and over 750 television monitors at concession and souvenir stands, suites and press levels. If you don’t see the message, then listen to the latest information from PA announcers Joe Benson and Jim Mueller on the Speedway public address system. Mueller joins California Speedway for the first time this weekend. He’s also the voice of Daytona International Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, North Carolina Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Online: The California Speedway website at www.californiaspeedway.com provides insightful information on the speedway as well as race event notes, photos and updates. For this year’s race, the website also proved to be a useful tool in selling tickets, as several guests opted to purchase online through our secure server.

I will be departing from BIG BEAR early SUNDAY morning, just trying to figure out what time to start and attempt to avoid a nightmare (or is it just inevitable?). Any other hints and/or suggestions to get the most out of this experience are appreciated. Thanks...
(5/1) Is Saturday not Sunday, so if you leave on 5/1 you should be good for Sunday!
