Just heard on the news this morning that a "speed boat" capsized off Catalina after the motor stopped and the boat took on water. One of those onboard used a cell phone to call authorities and the Coast Guard flew a helicopter to the site and hoisted them to safety.
Anyone lose a speed boat this weekend?

I havn't heard about that one. I did read in yesterdays paper that a "speed boat" capsized in Rhode Island with 7 family members on board. 3 confirmed dead. On of the kids swam to shore in the 50 degree water and knocked on someones door for help. Sounded like weather got shitty. No one in the 17 foot "speed boat" as the paper called it, was, you guessed it, wearing a life jacket. Probably a bayliner with a 115. Paper says may have been too many peeps in the boat.
If I'm in a 17ft in shitty weather, I'm not going to be bashful. I'm breaking out the lifejacket. I was in a 28 ft in that monsoon in Havasu a few weeks ago and it wasn't fun.

They had a picture of that on this mornings news. Looked like the nose of a beakboat was all that you could see. The Coast Guard had a line attached to the bow ring of the sunken boat, all that was above water was the front 2 feet of the speed boat. There might be something on the offshore boards about it. It was definitely "I hope the guys got insurance deal", all passengers made it to safety.

This was in the Orange county register, Monday May 10th
A wireless phone helped save the lives of four men whose 38-foot speedboat sank in the Catalina Channel on Saturday night.
When their boat's engine failed and the vessel started taking on water at about 5:30 p.m., they used a mobile phone to call a friend, who contacted the Coast Guard for help.
Within an hour, the four were hoisted to safety by rescue workers in a Coast Guard helicopter that was sent from San Diego.
The men were determined to be all right and were taken to Newport Beach.
Authorities identified the four as Art Rubio, 34, of Aliso Viejo; Joel Black, 22, of Riverside; Edwin Fernandez, 41, of Mira Loma; and Walter Fernandez, 36, of Rancho Cucamonga.
The men were wearing life preservers as they waited for help in 65-degree water about eight miles from Santa Catalina Island.
In those conditions, hypothermia can cause death. The boaters could have survived for five to six hours, according to Danny Phee, a search-and-rescue specialist with the U.S. Coast Guard in Los Angeles.
He helped coordinate the rescue operation.

And this from the LA Times,
Los Angeles County lifeguards rescued 14 members of a family from the waters off Dockweiler State Beach on Sunday after their boat and Jet Skis capsized.
No one was seriously injured in the 5:15 p.m. accident, but 11 family members were taken to area hospitals for further examination.
Los Angeles fire officials said the accident occurred after one member of the San Bernardino family fell overboard. As those on the boat sought to help, their craft drifted into the waves and capsized. When four other family members approached on Jet Skis to help, they too capsized.
But it could of been worse,

PACIFIC PALISADES -- More sharks were spotted in the waters off local beaches over the weekend.
For about a week now, a group of sharks have been lurking off Will Rogers State Park.
The creatures are about 8 feet long, and are believed to be baby great whites or mako sharks.
No one has been attacked, but sharks have been known to mistake humans for the seals or sea lions they eat.
The beach was closed briefly last Monday, but has remained open since then.

Engine trouble? 38ft? Sounds like a drive may have come apart.
That sounds scary. Whenever you play in the big pond it's a good idea to have your shit in order. I carry a cell phone AND a radio when I go to Catalina.

Sounds like they were out in the big lake by themselves without any other boats with them.

This was a different accident that happened right off the coast in the surf zone at Dockweiler. The speed boat accident was off of Catalina.
