View Full Version : A mile long launch ramp at Lake Powell?

I was talking with my Neighbor yesterday who is an airline pilot, and a boater. We were discussing the possibility of a trip to Lake Powell and I was voicing my concerns about the low water levels. He then told me about a mile long launch ramp(s) at Lake Powell. WTF? Now this seems excessive to me, but I wasn't going to call him a liar. Never having been to Lake Powell I couldn't dispute him, so I thought I'd do the prudent thing by coming on here and asking. Is it true?
He's a straightforward guy so I gave him the benefit of the doubt yesterday, but today I want to know if it's true.

Had your neighbor been drinking? :D j/k One mile sounds kind of long! We were at Powell last July and the ramp at Wahweep Marina was long but nowhere near the one mile mark, maybe a quarter mile to the bottom of the lake. ;) :D :D

Well, he is a commercial pilot so maybe he was talking about the landing strip near the launch ramp!:)

Well, there isn't one there either. :D I know the one at Wahweep looks a mile long, especially with the water low, but I don't know how long it really is.

We rented a slip last July and the parking lot was pretty close to the slips. :)

Man, to bad Hite is out of the water. That is the coolest part of the lake, very few people, even less now I imagine.

The phucked up part about the low water levels is that Castle Rock Pass out of Wahweep is closed, which means you have to drive though the old river channel which is narrow and can be rough with all the boat traffic.

There was a pic on here 2 weeks ago of that ramp.

I'm blown away by how much that lake level goes up and down. Our overflow reservoirs don't vary that much.
It looks like a beautiful boating lake, though.

Yep, they use them as a breakwater.

I was there a couple of days ago and yes the ramp is about 1/4 mile long. Other than that the lake still looks great.

F'ing nuts. That big ramp reminds me of Shasta. Probably just my imagination though.

I was thinking it was the mile long LINE at the launch ramp. Katherines or Lake Havasu Marina.....

No! Its far but not a mile. Wahweap ramp is the best but has the least parking. Stateline will be usable for bigger boats soon and has closer parking and lots of it. Its all down hill on the way in.
Stay away from Antelope for a few more weeks with anything over 18'.

We were there on sat & sunday we launched at state line ramp with no problems 24 ' boat . We also were able to park on the left or right sides of the ramp so the walk is not bad.

When the weather gets really hot, the walk from the courtesy dock to the parking lot is about 8 miles UPHILL...

My friend Rhonda has a time-share houseboat out there, and this year they are paying extra to have Bashirs(?) deliver and put away their food. After seeing the long walk, I think it is worth it.
