Seems people use electric pumps on most blower motors. Ive only broke twice on the lake, both times elec pumps went out on a tunnel rammed motor.Went to mechanical seven years ago and two motors on the same pump with zero problems. Time to step up with a blown 454. Can a blown big block surive on a mecanical. Can the long cranking to fill the carbs lean out motor. Thanks your your help

I have always had good luck with a 6 check valve mechanical. Use the high pressure model and a BYPASS regulator. Inline regulators are too restrictive. I install a bypass regulator directly on the outlet of the pump and bypass it right back to the pump inlet. No restriction and less plumbing. Plenty of fuel for two big carbs.

You can get by with a block mounted pump for a low HP blown motor. If you're trying to make big power you'll want to go with an electric, or a belt driven fuel pump to be able to maintain the propert volume.
What kind of HP are you trying to make ?

I'm with info on this one. I've seen some pretty stepped up 572" deals run the 6 check valve mechanical pumps. Clay Smith make the best one IMHOP. But the big Holley is ok too. I'm not saying they are better than the electrics but that I have seen some stout boats running them. Your 454 will be fine set up like Info suggested.

With the type of power you're trying to make a good six valve block mounted pump should be OK. Just remember that it's not going to b suited for much more power than that.

I'm with Superdave, I use the Clay Smith mechanical on my 547 with 1071 and 2 1050's.
It goes 6200 and maintains 5-6 psi and HP is 950+. Also it is very reliable and the cost is under $100. I don't know about now, but in the old days electrics were always giving out.
