View Full Version : Check your trailer ball...

Phat Matt
06-01-2004, 05:46 PM
...next time you go out. I left the boat in Havasu this weekend and when I went take off the trailer I noticed the nut on the bottom of the ball had come loose...real loose. I probably only had a couple of rotations left before the nut would have dropped off! It wasn't loose at all when I hooked it up Friday night so it must have happened on the trip out. So, before anyone loses their trailer, take a couple of seconds to see if it's tight!
That's my tip for the day, well that and don't pee in the wind. :D

Yeah, it should be fun. We left the boat out there since we were going back this Thursday. It's a lot nicer when we don't tow the boat because Goldilocks gets to help with the drive! :D

I was thinking how we could leave our boat.........somewhere, we have three trips in a row, this last weekend, next weekend and the following (all at different lakes)
oh, well, I gotta clean the boat anyway............;)

Smear the threads with rtv or some kind of silicone after you tighten. Or use a cold chisle and booger the threads up real good. I have never had one come loose.

You have totally lost me. The screws are on the deck (the thing you walk on when you are in the boat) So how would you get under to tighten the nut?

Buy one of these hitches and you don't need to worry about a nut. Just make sure you put the safety pins back in when you change height or ball size.

Don't buy the crap from Uhaul. We bought that crap a few years back before we went to Powell. The ball and nut were some how held together with a plastic retainer ring...Needless to say, the plastic ring lasted to about State Line and the nut came off in South Vegas. I didn't loose the trailer until North Vegas, and that scared the holy sheep shit outa me.
buy the good stuff and weld the ever lovin shit out of it...
who cares if you can't ever get it off, you don't want it comin off anyway.

No offense to Kachina, or anyone else using wood screws to hold in seats... But it does cost a lot more time (and money)to install through bolts in these spots. It is absolutely something that HAS to be done to build a boat properly, and to anyone trying to figure out how one boat costs less than another, while they look exactly the same... start looking at things like this.
There is my tip of the day... Nylocked machine screws don't back out of seat bases. ;)
Now, back to your regularly scheduled banter...

I understand what you are saying but how would you get the nylock under the deck? And if you did it during the building process, what if you needed to remove your seats? Unscrew it until it drops off into the hull to bounce around? I would think on most boats you would be unable to reach the bolts under the decking. How would you do it?

Essentially, they cut an access hole in the floor. Then they use a special ring mounted on the underside of the floor to give the access plug a place to remount. Then you reglass the access plug into the floor.
They make nylock assemblies that will not drop out of the underside of the floor when removing bolts.

So the nylocks stay in place and you can still remove the seats after it has been reglassed?

Mounting plates are installed during the building process when done properly. There is a lot of leverage created by a seat base, that screws will not hold.

My 2" ball has been shaking loose from time to time, especially on tough roads, no matter how tight I think I've got it.. I like the "tack weld" idea. I have a different slider for the 1.75" ball anyway.
