Has anybody used one of these eco-tech alternators ?? They put out 240 amps at idle and 300 at 4000 rpm ?? My plain is to run this alternator with two or four 6 volt batteries. The web site is www.wranglernw.com These alternators are rated at 8000 rpm continuous and are also used on the ford 7.3 ambulances . Not sure if this would charge the 6 volt bateries to quickly??

Lose the 6 volt idea, and run 4 Oddysey 2150's. Then that alternator would be a perfect match for the batteries. Do a search on 6 volt batteries in these forums for th pros and cons of them.
Oh, and those alts do rob HP!

Are you sitting down, on the site they are 1,500 $$to 1,800 $$ but fab pros in ontario sell them for 700.00

I was figuring with this alternator i could save some weigh on either batteries or a generator.

If it were me, I probably wouldn't do anything over 150 amps. Most people don't have the tunes at full tilt when running, and you can only bring the batteries back up so fast (or you'll cook them).
There's a BIG price difference between the two.

I never did understand that. Say you have a stock setup with a 65 amp alternator, and a single battery. I know it's regulated, but if you were to put a single battery on a charger, usually they don't reccomend more then about 10 amps charging, yet when your running your boat, the charging amperage is much greater.

If you are running the stock Mercury wiring your weak point will be the orange wire running from the alternator to the starter solinoid. Under heavy charging that wire connector on the back of the alternator will burn off (with just the stock components) and stop charging. To use a higher output charging system, means you must rewire to handle it.
