Five die in fiery collision
01:28 AM PDT on Friday, June 18, 2004
The Press-Enterprise
Five people, their bodies burned beyond recognition, died Thursday afternoon in a head-on collision on a highway in a remote desert area of San Bernardino County, coroner's officials said.
A 1991 Lincoln Towncar, registered in Phoenix, was westbound on Highway 62 east of Rice at 2:40 p.m. when it passed a tractor-trailer rig and collided head-on with an eastbound Ford Bronco, coroner's officials said.
The ensuing fire melted the license plate of the Bronco.
Officials said four people were in the Lincoln and one was in the Bronco, and that their ages and genders could not be determined. Dental records will be used to identify them and autopsies will be performed, officials said.

You sure it was a Lincoln Town car.. ?? I saw what was left of a Navigator arrive on Parker on a flat bed that looked like it was in the accident described.. ??

I stopped taking Rice Road years ago, going through Blythe only takes about 10 to 20 minutes longer.

My mom & dad came up on the accident right after it happened on Thursday. They said it was a terrible looking scene. I recently quit taking Rice Rd. and started going through Ehrenberg. It's not worth putting my wife and my kid's life's in jeopardy. It's much safer and it only takes about fifteen minutes longer.

I went by the accident scene about 5:00 and they already had CALTRANS people there. Could not tell make of vehicles involved they were so badly burned. Needless to say after seeing that tragedy up close we drove very conservatively the remainder of Rice Road, and I am now going to go through Blythe. I have timed it both ways and Blythe is 15-20 minutes longer, not worth the risk to the family.

That Navigator looked pretty bad. Judging by looking at it (and the caved in roof) I'd say whoever was in it didn't live to talk about it.

Two different CHP stations cover the two highways that make Rice Rd. I talked to both last year and found that the yearly death average for both roads combined is 3-5. Not surprisingly, the deaths usually occur between May and September. The injury rate is between 18-23 a year for both. A CHP officer was killed out there in 99' by a driver passing on a double solid yellow. The driver had been cited approx. 30 minutes prior by another officer for doing the same thing.
