In 2003, 963 boating accidents were reported to state officials in
California - the highest total for any year since accident stastics
have been recorded. Also disturbing is the upward trend in
number of boating fatalities.
The state department of Boating and Waterways reported in its
2003 California Boating Saftey Report the number of boating
accidents in 2003 broke the previous record of 925 accidents
reported in 1997.
Alcohol continues to be a big factor in boating accidents. At least
twenty-one percent of fatal boating accidents involved alcohol.
One-third of the victims were passengers, all of whom contributed
to there deaths due to poor judgment related to alcohol cunsumption.
Drowning continues as the leading cause of death in fatal boating
accidents - 37 in 2003 compard to 33 in 2002.
Of the 41 fatalities that occured in Northern California, 22 occured
on lakes, seven on northern rivers, five along the coast, four in
Sans Francisco Bay, and three in the Delta.
Here are a few suggestions from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
to stay safe on the water.
> Take an approved boating safety course. 80 percent of boating
fatality victims had no boating safety education.
> Get a FREE Vessel Saftey Check to make sure your boat has all
the legally required equipment.
> Be a sober skipper and insist on a sober crew.
> Wear a life jacket and require all passengers to wear life jackets,
when on deck or in an open boat.
> Don't engage in any horseplay with friends aboard other
vessels.
> Don't let friends operate your boat or PWC.
> Maintain a proper lookout at all times.
The alcohol was no suprise to me. Because it's legal to drink when
boating.
Drowning, well you can't do much about that. They could outlaw
drowning. Or people that need too, should wear life jackets.
Get a FREE boating safety check. I have all the right equipment in
my boat. So I don't need a FREE check up. Which doesn't matter
because now there forcing you to get a FREE shake down when
you hit the water. Around my parts anyway. I call it harassment.
But I guess there's alot of idiots out there on the water that need
to be harassed.
80% of boating fatality victims had no safety education.
That's no suprise either. I take a boating safety course on a regular
basis. I figure I'm one of the very few.
No horseplay with friends in other vessels. Why not?
sounds like fun to me.:D
Don't let your freinds operate your boat or PWC.
I never do. Iv'e seen some people that have never driven a boat
or PWC do some stupid things.

Hardcore,
I am like you, I take a safety course every 4 or 5 years just to refresh and see what laws may have changed.
I think it is safe to say we are a minority... so if this article is trying to show a disproportionate number of people that haven't taken boating safety education vs those that have are in accidents, well that doesn't work. It'd be more effective to say 80% of operators had taken some safety training, and 80% of those in accidents hadn't, but I bet the number of boat operators that have is much closer to 20%, which is probably why they didn't mention an estimate of owners that have safety training.
Free safety checks... I have had one of those before.
The guy tried to put the gigantic sticker (about 6x6 inches) on my boat. I said, please just let me figure out where to put that... which was in the trash...
Horseplay with friends? They just took all the fun out of boating! Maybe they should say no horseplay while the boat is moving.

Nice way for the Coast Guard to say DUH!
I go to the web site often too. That is why I can't figure out why people keep making the same dumb ass mistakes over and over. And they have had something on the web site about TEAK SURFING for about 4 or 5 years.

It should be illegal, too bad you can't legislate common sense...

Seems a whole lot safer than taking a bath to me. Nearly 1000 died in bathtubs. blah blah blah. I think you should sell your boat and take up needlepoint.
I grew up teak surfing and I'm still kicking. I also enjoy jumping out of planes. That is MY f.u.c.k.i.n.g. business. Enjoy your needlepoint girls.

I agree. I just fired off a letter to my representatives voicing my outrage that drowning is still legal. I'm not saying we should take away a persons right to drown, but at the very least we should make people register before they go out and drown.
I AM OUTRAGED. :D
A few people on the water justify this bumber sticker : If sense is so common, why don't you have any??

Harumph, I am outraged as well, what have our government officials been doing all these years allowing drowning to continue to be legal?
I think it's kind of like survival of the fittest, or in this case survival of the smartest?

I took a boating course 2 years ago. I was the smartass in the course with all the questions they couldn't answer. I will be honesty though, I would not have taken it if it weren't for a pointless ticket. I grew up around boats and we are always safe. If you are just starting out then it is a very good idea to take the course and go boating with someone with experience. I can't for the life of me figure out why boaters don't need to be licensed.

That ticket wasn't pointless!! It created a job for a happy cop!!
If he didn't give you a ticket, there wouldn't be revenue to pay him, except in Parker. Food for thought in a vicious circle.
Boat drivers license...bad idea. If you see someone who needs some pointers don't get pissed. Help them out.
If we need to get licensed, it will become a money maker. Then, you will need/pay so much more than what you are now.
There are very few incidents that occur on the water in comparison to the land. All we need is another beaurocracy.
F#%k that.
Less government=more freedom. Right now the beaurocrats are winning.

Well, the best thing about the boating classes I have taken is that I got a 10% discount on my insurance...

Ha, classic Doc. lol.
I was dead reckoning to Catalina Island in a 17 ft Whaler when I was 12 years old. The tricky part was getting out of Long Beach (Marine Stadium) harbor in the dark. Or better yet, back into the harbor when it was dark.
Where's my discount?
I hope the course was free.

It was a freebie.
And the reason I took the first one was to get that discount on my insurance, not because I felt I needed any "training"... I provided plenty of that for myself over the years just like you.

This teak surfing issue is getting to be a burnt out issue.
It's common sense!!!
So your drunk and you forget your buddies on the back of the
boat. Their hanging onto the swim (Quote) "swim" platform and
they don't have life jackets on. The boat is running and their
breathing exhaust fumes.
You should all be arrested for being idiots!!
We don't need a law against teak surfing. Don't be a f.ucking idiot!
