I recently rebuilt my 455 and have an oil leak. The oil is coming from under the bellhousing and hits the flywheel and slings a little oil onto my exhaust. I figure its either the rear of the oil pan or the rear main seal. My question is if its the rear main seal, how can I change it withour pulling all the pistons out? Can that be done or does all the pistons have to come out to pull the crankshaft to get the the rear main seal. I used the graphite rope looking gasket that came in my gasket set.

See your local older auto parts store and ask for a "sneeky Pete". Its a tool that works on the "chinese finger grip" idea. It allows you to pull the rope seal over the top of the crank. make sure your leak is in fact the rear main, there are galley plugs in the back of the motor as well, and the filter adaptor is also a common leaker. good luck...Moneypitt

Get the neoprene seal to put back in. I have pulled the main caps before, lifted the entire rotating assembly a C hair and replaced one on a small block Olds. The rope seal can be a real *****. The Neoprene seals can be had from most any Olds specialist. Ask over on

Somebody will get you sqaured away with a new seal.

The stock application for the neoprene rear main seal you need is the 460 Ford. Couple bucks at any parts house.

Squirt, are you saying the 460 seal will work on this crank?

Squirt, are you saying the 460 seal will work on this crank? Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying. Learned that trick a looooooong time ago.....

The gasket companys finally figured it out too. At Napa you can just ask for the rubber seal for a 455 instead of the rope.

How bad is the leak? I had my 455 rebuilt by a shop that.....well let's just say "It wasn't done correctly". I put it in the boat and had a HUGE oil leak. Also hitting the back side of the fly wheel. They left out a small soft plug that is behind the fly wheel and in line with the distributor. I forget what it's for but if it's not there, you got a real bad oil leak.

old Not bad enough to pull the motor out till the winter. Its just bad enough to leave evidence in my bildge and enough to hit the flywheel and fling a little oil on my headers. I will fix it this winter. They probably left out the freeze plug directly behind the plug that squirts the distributor gear. It probably allowed the dist. oiler to squirt right out of the block. Thats a pretty rookie mistake. This was my first engine build, so I have an excuse for having an oil leak.
