Hey guys. I'm running a 1978 Marlin 18' jet boat with an Olds 455 and a Berk 12JC-A pump.
This boat is getting a complete overhaul and I am in the process of overhauling the pump and motor.
I'm wanting to install a Place Diverter, for the sole purpose of kicking up a rooster tail for show(gotta love rooster tails).
My question is...
In an 18' boat with an empty bow(bow used for storage, no fuel tank in the bow), will this change the handling characteristics drastically? I'm wanting to make sure that when I kick up the tail that the bow of the boat doesn't come up off the water on me.

It will lift the nose of the boat and free up the hull so not as much boat will be in the water. Get a hydraulic diverter, i love mine.

You should be fine. The diverter alone might not do the job though.
I am running a 78 Sanger Super Jet with Berkley 12JG pump and I just installed a Place Diverter and awsn't too happy with the tail. Then some of the guys here told me to add a 4 degree shim along with the diverter if I wanted a bigger tail. Well I did exactly that and holy chit did it ever do the trick!!!!!! :) She throws a nice roost of water now and the handling is still all there.
Personally I am an offshore boater and run a Sunsation 32 Dominator but the folks here have been giving me a crash course on jet boats so I can get my dads Sanger I am restoring all dialed in for him. They have been a wealth of knowledge.
Here are a couple pics throwing the roost.

OK. Yeah I was worried that maybe it would kick the bow up really high...was thinking it would raise it up to where it usually is when you're getting on plane. That wouldn't be good.
Out of curiosity, what's the difference in response between hydraulic and manual?

Can't give any advice on the hydraulic except its more $$$$$. I went with the manual diverter and it works just fine.

go manual! they're cheaper and easier to maintain, i've had both styles and will stay manual from now on. it nice to look down and see excatly where the divertor is positioned on the ratchet, the hyd. requires extra parts to run a trim gauge. just my .02
if ya get a manual kit, pm me and i can show you how to knock planes outta the ski with it, just alittle mod to the nozzle, takes @20minutes and is alot easier to do with divertor already off.

I am pulling my diverter this week to install a Droop Snoot so added tail height would interest me greatly. :rollside:

Does this involve a grinder?

Yes they are. Here is my boat with a droop, 3* of wedge. Best investment i ever made.

God that is beautiful! Love the mile high rooster tails! Can't wait till my boat can do that.
Just got my jet pump back from the powder coater today...looks beautiful. It will look 10 times better with that diverter on it.
I also got my motor back from the machine shop today. Got the cam in with plenty of assembly grease on it. Haven't checked my clearances on the main bearings yet. The cam is a W-30 grind, with SAE duration of .328 on intake and exhaust, and .050 duration of .244 on both intake and exhaust, with .475 of valve lift. I also got a one wire 94 amp marine alternator and the Berkeley Packajet starter for it, and the Holley 750 double pump is on the way. The ignition will be an MSD 6M-2 with the 6AL5 rev limiter box on it, complete with the MSD "Ready To Run" distributor and Blaster coil. With the new pump, this motor's gonna be ready to rock. Even better once I get the diverter on it.

don't all the best mods, lol. yep just gotta "massage" the top collar on the nozzle alittle, gave me a full extra up notch on my ratchet. just gotta be VERY CAREFUL not to remove to much material or it'll blow nozzle o-rings, just be mindful of where the oring seats and don't remove any of it.

Nice one.... LMAO :rollside: :D

d-man taught me the trick, i pm'd him and asked him to stick up his mod pics of his divertor. you guys can see what to do from the pics, just pay attention and don't go shit crazy with the grinder and it'll bring up your rooster ALOT!

has some good pics that show how to modify for bigger roost

so this mod is for the non split bowl type. i have a JG pump. i have a custom made diverter with mostly berkeley parts. so i suppose i need to shave down the nozzle holder, but i think it may already be almost maxed out. with the cable off i can swivel the nozzle up & down til the teflon O-ring is exposed.
with the cable on and nozzle up, i have it adjusted so the o-ring on the nozzle is in the nozzle holder bout a 1/2 inch. i guess i cant get more than that with what i got. i think i need wedges!
heres a few pics. http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...3752032_5A.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...3752030_7A.JPG http://www.***boat.com/image_center/...3752035_2A.JPG
and i still cant hit the bridge in the delta!
these are pics before the first time out with it.
adjustments were made to make cable to jetO straighter.
here is a few pics of my eek-O-vator!

I remember you posting about that, something about a nozzle turned sideways or something like that?
I've read that the JC & JG diverters are interchangeable, so by that reasoning, I would assume ( and you know what they say about "assume" :D ) that the nozzles are the same as well. I don't see why it wouldn't work on any diverter nozzle to tell you the truth. I didn't do the grinding, one of the previous owners did it, so I can't really take credit for it. :rollside: I will mention that when talking to someone at Place about that Teflon O-ring nozzle seal, they said that grinding too much will make it prone to blowing that O-ring outta there and that grinding it was a bad idea in general. Mine is actually ground too much. When the diverter is full up like that, the O-ring loses contact with the sealing surface on the bottom side. Haven't had any problems with it though. (yet, LOL) :rollside:

mine too!
that was the one, i cut the nozzle & rotated 90degrees & welded it back together so the pins would line up. the reasoning behind it was my boat is a s/j that doesnt have a transome adapter & i didnt want to mess with the stock steering.
the first time out i did blow out a teflon seal. luckily i had the back up nozzle in the back of the truck. i robbed it off & was back on the water within a 1/2 hr with a few adjustment.

460, awesome.....
I need some advise, i am a noob... but i am on the quest for the roost..... I see that i am reviving an old thread. I have a starbuck kustom 18' that has a olds 403 with some slight mods. Bigger oil pump pan, rockers intake exhaust, cam, distrib, etc... nothing super crazy....
I like the grinding idea to get a little more angle on the diverter..... I know I have a Berk 12-jc drive but not sure of the spacer inbetween... with the brackets on both sides. He had a GM motor for the trim and a place diverter handle to adjust the gate, 7 position... Here are some pics... please let me know what i have here.... I read all of the posts bust nobody says how much to go before you are blowing seals.... what is the safe zone? also, where do you Shim? do you have any pics of where to shim?
Thanks So Much .........

Gotta say, I'm not sure what kind of setup you've got there. Pretty sure its not a Place brand diverter though. You may try getting with Tom at JetBoat Performance, he posted some pics of an old diverter awhile back that looked similar to that.
That setup, with the cables and stuff, was like that when you got the boat, you say? Usually on the gate, or reverse bucket, it is either open or closed, no use in having the 7 different locking positions on the reverse bucket, in my opinion.
You got any more pics of the boat in general, never seen a transom like that, shaped around the bowl like that one is.....

Here is a link to the thread I mentioned, looks to be the same as yours. Check it out..... Diverter ID (http://www.***boat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141100)

I'd get ahold of Tom like I mentioned as well, since he is familiar with that diverter. He may have some tips on what can be done with it. I've dealt with him before on some of my stuff, really nice guy, he'll help ya out if he can. :rollside:

I know most people have the gate connectyed to the throttle to open with the throttle.... thats how my buddies cobra jet is... I have a hot foot for the carb so the diverter lever is to control forward and reverse.... more pics on way.....
Thanks....

My name is tom, so its a hard name to forget.... what is his username or number? Thanks
