Nice area.. for retirement peeps.. Four seasons..
Snow in the winter not too hot in the summer.
    Lots of trees, and ELK..
Since I'm thinking Mom and Dad are retirement peeps.... sounds like a great deal. No money, good climate, lots to do with age group folks.
    Downside: Those Damn in laws...

Downside: Those Damn in laws...My inlaws live in Reno
Yep, my folks are considering moving up there but not retiring. As it is, my pops really doesn't need an office. His clients fedex , ups, email ,and fax from various parts of the country. Bummer is that once they leave, I don't think they'll be able to move back because of the increase inhousing cost.
I just don't know what the hubub is though. The've bought here in 73 and both of them work here in town. Their commute is shorter than mine(8mile)! The major clash I see is that my folks aren't morman... My pops isn't very fond of the cycle jockies...
Now I'm hearing Hollbrook, but I think the area is pretty much the same...
My folks grew living along the river then moved here(navy) when I was born in 69. Bought their home in 73 and have lived here in so cal ever since... It's hard to believe they can make such a drastic move...we're talking SNOW!.
    :jawdrop:
besides, I still get all of mom's home cooking. They currently live around the corner from me

There are lots of nice community type places in the AZ high country. Look into Show-Low (It's getting pretty big though), Heber, and others that are slipping my mind.

Along those same lines, another place I'd look would be Payson. It's about an hour out of the valley stays cooler than the valley in the summer time and sees some occasional snow in the winter. My dad and wsm moved up there 10 years ago and haven't looked back. It's a little bit more diversified than some of the Mo' towns in the eastern part of the state. They have some cool bars and restaurants and a nice casino.

The problem with any of them north of Payson is the combination of the drought and the bark beetles. I don't know if you've been up the rim in the last year or so, but it's sad seeing the big stands of dead trees, no matter if you go up through Pine and Strawberry or out through Heber. Going through Heber you get to see the remnants of the Rodeo Chedesky fire as well. I'd stop in Payson at this point.
One of my buddies has a cabin up around Christopher Creek. They had to cut 200 pine trees down around his place because of the bark beetles. So much for a cabin in the woods.

There's a world of difference between Holbrook and the Show Low/Snowflake/Payson/Heber area.
I lived in Holbrook for a few years when I was a kid. It's not in the mountains, it's on a huge plataeu near the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert.
I drove through there on the way to CBBB, looks like nothing has changed. Pretty much a lower income town, and not nice to look at. In the winter it's cold as h3ll, 5,000 ft. elevation and nothing to stop the wind.
