Which direction should oil flow through an oil cooler? Does it matter? I pulled it out of the boat to repaint it and like an idiot I forgot to take note as to which hose went to wich side.

It would seem logical to add the hottest oil to the coldest water. Hook the oil coming from the engine to the end that the water sees first......It would seem that would do the most cooling, the quickest.......Maybe that is too simple to be correct, but it seems logical........Anyone else got any ideas?.........MP

the best "flow design" is counterflow (aka crossflow) that is have the oil and water coming at each other head on (different directions)... this way the oil and water have the temperature difference (aka delta t) as high as possible throughout the heat exchange process.
The difference will be measureable although with the oil temp being greater than 200'F and the lake water at 80'F there should be plenty of heat transfer.
also, it helps to have both fluids moving quickly to generate turbulence and highest heat transfer. hope this helps!

That make sense. I was just afraid that maybe the cooler only flowed one direction.
