Thread: Engine Build Up!

Before we get into the rebuild, I thought I'd post this as a heads up for anyone looking at
buying a motor from a stranger at the "super" good deal and don't have receipts!. First
thing to look for is a tag (could be anywhere) riveted to the block with a number on it,
this is not from the factory!. Fleet rebuilders do that for identification for their 90 day
    wonder warranties!..

Or this disc epoxied on a freeze plug, this block had both could be it went thru two
different rebuilders at one time or another??..

This is what I found when I started digging into it, 2 bolt main, cast crank, bearings are
mostly all black, crank is .010/.010 but never polished and it's rough, main caps are all
loose on block, rod caps aren't much better!.

Found this instantly when I pulled the head they are cracks, I can catch them with a
fingernail!.. Pistons look like Badger rebuilder pistons, they are definitly not Silvolites!..

Looks like parts did a number here, no signs of detonation on the bearings of course this
would run on water almost anyhow!..

Cylinders are bad news they are rough, looks like this motor was in water for a while!???

Thought the crank was at least salvageable since it was straight. Upon further inspection
turned out it's total J-Unk!. What I thought might have been a stain of some kind at first
glance, turns out to be that the crank has been welded before and whoever did it didn't
build it up enough and they turned it the way it was so it's done!..

My suggestion is, if you re really interested in a motor take cash in hand to show good
faith and ask him if he'll at least pop the intake and the pan and a main and rod cap to at
least get an idea what's inside. If he pisses and moans about it and don't want to do it, I
    say beware!..
Well as soon as I get some parts we'll get going on the new one, the only things we will be using are the head castings and the externals!... Stay tuned!..

    Art,
Hope you got a good deal on that one, I'd be irritated to say the least.
What's this engine for that ski boat you were building up?

This isn't mine, I won't buy motors!. It was in a kid's jet boat he bought it thinking he got a good motor for a good price, another lesson learned the hard way!..

Nope, I haven't heard from him in quite awhile, he got real sick right after this deal and I think he took a hit in the wallet, so I'm still waiting for $$$$$$$$ for parts!..

What you mean we're suposed to get paid fot this??? Now wonder I have to work so much... Truthfully I can relate. I have found it necessary to get a deposit to atleast cover parts. One of my faults is not separating friends and business.... Some day I'll learn, I HOPE...
